Classical music advice

By chance I just heard Vivaldi's Violin concerto in F minor (Winter) which I think is quite an incredible piece of music. For some reason it reminded me of being at a party or a club with a track that has a massive chorus and everyone gets excited with the anticipation in the build up and then collectively go nuts in the chorus.

Can anyone recommend any other classical music pieces that have the same kind of vibe to them? I fancy making a classical music rave playlist. 😃

Carmina Burana, Fanfare for the Common Man, Also sprach Zarathustra, Zadok the Priest. Shostakovich 5th Symphony. Lots of dramatic classical music. Will think of some more.

doodlejump1980 · 28/11/2020 08:55

Brahms academic festive overture. Blew the speakers on my car listening to this one 🤦🏻‍♀️

How2Help · 28/11/2020 09:11

Agree with Beethoven's 9th. There literally is no other piece of music that can beat that perfect specimen of build up. Fact. Grin

Though Tchaikovsky’s swan lake finale thingy is fairly close.

AnaViaSalamanca · 28/11/2020 09:18

how about shostakovich esp 5, 6, 11, 13?

chomalungma · 28/11/2020 09:34

Jupiter from The Planet Suites

I know what you mean - when you know that it's building to something.

I can think of loads that I listen to and know it's going to build up - I am just trying to remember them!!

1812 overture has similar - plus it comes with cannons at the end!

Lostthetastefordahlias · 28/11/2020 09:46

Nutcracker Russian March?

StarsOnThars · 28/11/2020 10:34

@RolandOnTheRopes yes that is perfect! Huge crescendo!! Love it.

Ooh yes Swan Lake finale. Definitely on the list!

I notice these are mostly in a minor key. Adds to the tension!

Have added Prokofiev Romeo & Juliet Ballroom scene.

A lesser-known one - Part 1 of Elijah by Mendelssohn, where the overture builds and builds until the chorus bursts in.

chomalungma · 28/11/2020 11:04

Khachaturain

Adagio from Spartacus

chomalungma · 28/11/2020 11:08

I call these my 'sit in the car' pieces - . Just sitting in the car and not getting out as I had to wait as the piece builds up.

StarsOnThars · 28/11/2020 11:14

@Lyonesse2020 which No. is that one?

The sorcerer's apprentice
Flight of the bumblebee
Handel's fireworks

FlibbertyGiblets · 28/11/2020 11:38

The overture to Tannhauser. Where it is suddenly in 4 4 and you don't know how he changed it from 3 4 or when. Epic.

TabbyStar · 28/11/2020 11:45

Borodin Polovtsian Dances
Britten's Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra when it all comes together at the end

Lyonesse2020 · 28/11/2020 11:56

@StarsOnThars, Opus 70. I particularly like the recording with Thomas Hampson and Barbara Bonney.

LassoOfTruth · 28/11/2020 12:03

Also Spartacus and Phrygia by Khachaturian and Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances. Samuel Barber’s Adagio for strings was actually turned into a trance track some years ago but the original (strings or choral version) is beautiful.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/11/2020 12:15

Carmen, Bizet
Prokofiev's Classical Symphony, also his Lieutenant Kije Suite, also the famous bit from his Romeo and Juliet
Handel's Messiah, esp Hallelujah Chorus
Peter Grimes, Benjamin Britten
Ride of the Valkyries, Wagner
Janacek's something - can't remember its name but for an oldster like me it's the Crown Court TV theme
Borodin, the one about crossing the Steppes, I think it's the one that is the basis for Stranger in Paradise
Smetana, Ma Vlast

notafanoftheman · 28/11/2020 12:30

Ravel’s bolero

StarsOnThars · 28/11/2020 12:36

Can't believe I forgot about Adagio for Strings and Bolero.

Some amazing music here. Loving listening to all the recommendations. Some of these I know but some are new to me (Borodin). Keep 'em coming. 😍

@notafanoftheman

Ravel’s bolero
Don't you think Bolero just goes on and on and on and on Grin
