Classical music advice

By chance I just heard Vivaldi's Violin concerto in F minor (Winter) which I think is quite an incredible piece of music. For some reason it reminded me of being at a party or a club with a track that has a massive chorus and everyone gets excited with the anticipation in the build up and then collectively go nuts in the chorus.

Can anyone recommend any other classical music pieces that have the same kind of vibe to them? I fancy making a classical music rave playlist. 😃

The fourth movement of the Pines of Rome by* Ottorino Respighi*.

Pretty much all Mahler symphonies build up to massive finales in their last movements, dito Shostakovich 5, 7 and 10.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/11/2020 13:34

Brahms German Requiem, used as the theme for the epic series The World At War

On Bolero: Boléro may have brought Maurice Ravel worldwide renown, the composer invariably scoffed at his composition. When, on the evening of the first performance, someone shouted that it was the work of a madman, the composer is said to have murmured "That person has understood". More importantly, we have Ravel's actual words: "My masterpiece?Boléro? What next!Sadly there is nothing musical in it";

Stravinsky Firebird, the finale. Goosebumps every time. That gorgeous solo horn call ...

JuneFromBethesda · 28/11/2020 13:43

Gah, I just watched that Youtube clip and now I'm in tears. I work in classical music and the industry has been brought to its knees this year. So many concert halls closed, concerts cancelled, orchestras silent. Such a loss :(

JuneFromBethesda · 28/11/2020 13:48

@AnaViaSalamanca

how about shostakovich esp 5, 6, 11, 13?
Definitely, just about anything Shostakovich - I don't think you can beat him for emotional intensity. The first time I heard a Shostakovich symphony live (no.7) I was literally on the edge of my seat by the end. Blown away.

@FlibbertyGiblets

The overture to Tannhauser. Where it is suddenly in 4 4 and you don't know how he changed it from 3 4 or when. Epic.
Oh yes.

Bruckner's 8th symphony.

Pretty much any Mahler symphony.

Sh0ck3d · 28/11/2020 13:59

OP I'm pretty sure it's Winter from Four Seasons that is sampled in I Don't Really Care by K-Gee. Look it up, It is amazing!!

It's been a gym/workout favourite of mine for years!

Does it really? I did not know that. World at war was on constantly in our house growing up, I always loved the music.
FlibbertyGiblets · 28/11/2020 14:37

I would add the the music from Star Wars and ET, plus LOTR.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/11/2020 14:50

@ Candleabra, sorry, no. This is the WaW theme, by Carl Davis:

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/11/2020 14:52

Vaughan Williams, The Lark Ascending or Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis.

Carl Davis. Yes that rings a bell! Anyway, it's a good theme tune. I'll go and have a listen to Brahms now (never a hardship)
TheTurnOfTheScrew · 28/11/2020 15:16

Brahms violin concerto - especially the bit where they build up to the solo violin entry from about 2'40 - is a proper banger

Marquez Danzon No 2

Wienawski etude 4

Der Erlkonig grand Caprice - Ernst

Death and the Maiden - Schubert

StarsOnThars · 28/11/2020 16:20

@Sh0ck3d Oh wow love that K-Gee song. It's gone right into my running playlist.

I don't often listen to classical music but I find that it's often more likely to get you in the solar plexus more than most other music.
