I'm getting a very large freezer on Monday which will be in the garage.
Hit me with suggestions on filling it up.

If I had a big freezer to fill, I'd keep various types of bread, some ready meals for lazy nights, pulses that I'd cooked in large quantities, ready to use, peas, spinach, green beans, a couple of litres of milk, and I'd try to batch cook more, eat one, freeze one kind of thing. Also of course fresh meat and fish, icecream, berries. Crumble topping, pastry.

Sadik · 27/11/2020 21:06

Assuming you're not vegetarian, half a lamb? My freezer isn't big enough sadly, but it's generally a very good deal! Obviously for next year now but if you grow your own veg french beans freeze really well, as do cherry tomatoes (for use in cooking!)

CherryPavlova · 27/11/2020 21:07

Homemade ready meals - lasagne, chilli, pies, cauliflower cheese etc.
Milk.
Pitta.
Basics like frozen fruit for smoothies
Ice cream
Quick cook things like Bao buns, chicken mini fillets, samosa and fish fingers.
Vegetarian alternatives.
Lots of our pig and lamb.

So. Fucking. Much. Recently moved from place with fridge with freezer compartment to fridge freezer. I could have wet myself with excitement.
Veg, ready meals, grated parmesan, beige food, vodka, icecream, an apple strudel, little tubs of bottom of jar stuff, ginger, herbs going manky frozen in ice cube trays, stock, soups, curries, katsu sauce, a LOT of gyoza... loads. It's my happy place.

Gouldengirl9 · 27/11/2020 21:16

Takethewinefromtheswine I'm so excited too. Its a second hand one from my cousin.

Christmas, basically. There's a turkey crown, the ham, more cocktail sausages than is reasonable, sausage rolls, puff pastry, filo pastry, streaky bacon, and prawns. Chicken livers. There will be smoked salmon, smoked cod, three lobsters , crab claws, fresh salmon and some other bits between now and The Day.

Additionally, there are frozen chips, broccoli, petits pois, scallops, chicken pieces, thin cut steak, stewing steak, a whole chicken, a joint of beef, tortillas, lots of packets of minced beef, minced lamb, minced pork, sausages, more sausages and chorizo sausages, my DH's fishing bait and some pre-made curry gravy.

There are probably more things in The Depths - it's a large chest freezer. I worry about power cuts.

I think I'd have to go to Farmfoods and just buy everything, to be honest. I would genuinely go and fill the trolley with lots of meat, veg, frozen fruit, and then treat foods like pizzas, fish fingers, ice lollies etc. Also several loaves of bread if at all possible!

I would like to be able to shop once a month, and no more. I find it much easier to budget that way. I spend a fortune shopping weekly.

Comefromaway · 27/11/2020 21:45

Top shelf

Yorkshire puddings, scones, ice cream, fruited teacakes, pitta bread

Middle shelf - aunt bessies roasts, hash browns, peas, mixed veg, sweet potato wedges, left over pizza, garlic bread, lasagne, ready meal curry

Bottom shelf cod, salmon, pork chops, gammon, fish cakes, fish fingers, popcorn chicken, bacon, left over cooked beef slices, diced chicken,

We got one of those freezers at the end of summer. I was just as excited as you 😂 and I’ve been slowly stocking up each week ready for Brexit. I’ve aimed for staple meals, winter warmers and warming puddings for a bit of comfort. We do use things up as we go but I aim to replace what I’ve used.

I do need to sort it out and make a list of what we have as it can be difficult to find what we have and it’s sooooo cold when you’re looking for things. So that’s my advice.

Off the top of my head we have:

Meat- a full chicken, lots of chicken thighs divided into freezer bags, burgers divided into freezer bags, a gammon joint, a few packs of sausages, mince, stewing steak.

Junk food type meals: pizzas, garlic pizza breads, fish fingers, battered fish, chicken goujons (sp?) southern fried chicken.

Potato products: chips, waffles, roast potatoes (usually make my own but just in case), wedges.

Veg: peas, roasting veg (again prefer to make my own but just in case), cauliflower cheese, onion rings.

Puddings: apple crumbles, one pie and strudels, cheesecake, several different tubs of ice cream.

Miscellaneous: Yorkshire puddings, red milk, green milk and 3(!) loaves of bread.

Think that’s it but I’d have to dig deep to make sure! It’s been a god send now that we live rurally and can’t just nip to the supermarket and we’ll be all set for a while if we need to self isolate or the shot hits the fan.

HollowTalk · 27/11/2020 23:07

Let it stand for several hours before you switch it on. Very very important!

yearinyearout · 27/11/2020 23:08

Peas, bag of oven chips, frozen mixed fruit, various home cooked meals (chilli, curries, cottage pie, pasta sauces) ice cream, chicken breasts, crumble topping.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 27/11/2020 23:09

DH

That'll learn him!

DramaAlpaca · 27/11/2020 23:12

What's in our freezer? Lots of UFOs (unidentified frozen objects) Hmm

DH, who's currently in charge of making dinners, is gradually working his way through them to make space in the freezer, somehow managing to come up with edible meals.

bsquared · 27/11/2020 23:15

Picard surgelés. You can get their stuff from Ocado - really good bags of croissants, confit of duck, fondant potatoes and the most incredible aubergine gratin.

RayOfSunshine2013 · 27/11/2020 23:16

Ice cream/ice cube/ dessert drawer
Meat drawer - bulk buy from butchers and bag in portions
Frozen veg/steam rice pack drawer
Leftover and quick meals drawer - random batch cooking and pizzas, nuggets, chips etc

Osquito · 27/11/2020 23:22

So envious! I have a tiny freezer that doesn’t hold much, but currently it includes several batches of (raw) cookie dough, which I can just stick in oven for 20’. Priorities!

If I had a chest freezer I’d have a lot of frozen pastries and batch meals, and I’d keep my whole grain flour in there too.

Elledouble · 27/11/2020 23:28

My freezer is small, and it mainly contains bread products (we don’t eat much bread) and batch cooked single-serving meals. If I had a bigger freezer I’d probably have more frozen veg and more batch cooked meals!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 27/11/2020 23:31

Pies, several boxes of various ready meals, battered fish and smoked fish fillets, bags of mixed field veg, frozen mash, frozen toasties, frozen onions, frozen peppers, frozen mushrooms, several varieties of fake meat, a few batches of home-cooked stews, chillies, curries etc. It's only a small freezer so we can't fit much in it.

Chicken breasts and thighs, sausages, veggie sausages, veggie mince and beef mince, peas, corn on the cobs, spinach, jackets, micro bags of mixed veg, couple of micro meals, fish fingers, chopped onion and garlic, icecreams, spring rolls...think that's about it!

AdoraBell · 27/11/2020 23:36

Our freezer really needs sorting.

I aim to have fruit, veg, butter, cheese, chicken, beef and lamb.

Then meals I’ve made - chilli/meatballs/ragu type stuff. Lasagna, curry, casserole. I used to have veg and chicken prepared for fajitas.

Lozz22 · 27/11/2020 23:43

Freezer nothing at all until Wednesday when I can go shopping. My wages have massively been fucked up so once my bills have gone out and I've sorted a few Xmas presents out I'll be scraping the barrel yet again next month. Trying to work out a shopping list that doesn't go over £60 and lasts a month is hard
