From my time on, Dad had a Volvo 145 estate, then a 144 saloon, an Audi 100 then a Datsun Stanza. Both Volvos and the Audi were company cars but he bought the Datsun outright. Mum had a MK 3 Vauxhall Viva, an Austin Allegro, a Chrysler Alpine and, finally, a Fiat Strada. We were fortunate to be a two-car family (also necessary with seven children) but from the mid-80s we just had the one; a VW Golf and a variety of Fords at different times.

Dad's cars were, by and large, tough and reliable. Mum was less fortunate; she'd had enough of the All Aggro after six months and she got a brand new Alpine - whose gearbox failed the day after we got it home! Wot fun. Strada was a poorly-built rustbucket.

Best family car was my grandpa's Aston Martin DB4 though.

Echobelly · 27/11/2020 17:54

The first car I remember was a big banana-yellow Volvo saloon.

Then we had a lot of Renaults, I remember a green 25 (a friend of my parents was a Renault dealer, so they got good deals from him)

My dad bought a Nissan Silvia as he fancied something sporty. We all loved it because it had those pop-up front headlights!

WildRosie · 27/11/2020 17:56

The Daf 44 evolved into the Volvo 66. It's decades since I last saw one. I think the Volvo 343 was originally a Daf design which Volvo produced after buying Daf.

Austin Maxi, aka the bed on wheels, was designed by Alec Issigonis, who also designed the Mini and the Morris Minor. Maxis were very comfortable cars, so I'm told.

My friend's parents had an Austin 1300 Traveller, followed by a Morris Marina then a Chrysler Sunbeam. Mrs Friend could get astonishing speed out of the Marina, which wasn't pleasant if you were sitting unsecured in the back!

Astra
Montego
Vauxhall carlton

CeliaCanth · 27/11/2020 18:01

Earliest I can remember was a light blue Hillman Wimp which was noisy and unreliable and the exhaust fell off on the A1 when we were coming back from holiday. That was followed by an N reg green Ford escort followed by a white Triumph Toledo. We then lost faith with British cars and had a brown Datsun Sunny and red Datsun Cherry. Dad then got a green Volvo which saw us through all my university drop offs and collects.
Mum had an orange Mini Clubman and I remember my dad trying to teach her to drive, which was quite fraught Grin

StandardPoodle · 27/11/2020 18:04

Ford Consul
Ford Corsair
Various Cortinas

LubaLuca · 27/11/2020 18:04

A Rover SD1 is the first one I can remember in the late 70s. It was huge, and I remember sticking to the seats in summer.

jambeforeclottedcream · 27/11/2020 18:07

Mum had a Vauxhall nova then a corsa
Dad had Nissan Primaras and Ford Focuses

90s- 00s

formerbabe · 27/11/2020 18:08

@Mrspimplepopper

Astra Montego Vauxhall carlton
We had a Vauxhall Carlton too and before that a Vauxhall Senator...both company cars.

Apparently my dad got a lada when I was a baby and a fiat panda which constantly broke down.

Dad got me an M reg Ford escort as my first car...it was a beaut.

Girlyracer · 27/11/2020 18:11

2 x Ford Capri, 1 x Ford Escort Mk II, Ford XR3i

NotMeNoNo · 27/11/2020 18:13

That's right we had two DAF 44's and then a Volvo 66 Grin well into the 1980s.

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 27/11/2020 18:27

We had a red datsun, then a blue mini, a brand new silver vauxhall chevette that got written off after about 6 weeks by an uninsured driver, a silver allegro & a red nova.

SuperFairy · 27/11/2020 18:34

Mini
Hillman Hunter
Ford Corsair!
Capri x 2
Cortina
Plus other standard sales rep cars e.g. Cavaliers

We went really posh once when my mum had a Renault Fuego with metallic bronze paintwork!

Flamingolingo · 27/11/2020 18:34

Rather boring, we had an escort and then a plethora of Astras. My first car was a 1990 Fiesta though.

My friend’s mum had a thing for 2CVs though, especially soft top ones.

I have very fond memories of 80s/90s attitudes to the number of people ‘allowed’ in cars and sitting places in addition to actual seats (footwell, boot). A couple of friends had dads who had vans that we were allowed to roll around the back in, including one plumber with a flatbed truck that we used to ride up the road in the back of, sometimes sitting on sanitary ware. And when I worked at the stables sitting on the wheel arch of the tractor was a thing. It’s a wonder I survived!!

OhMsBeliever · 27/11/2020 18:41

None, neither of my parents could drive cars (my dad was a train driver though)

I do have fond memories of squishing into my childminders Ford Capri. Ahh, the days of no car seats or seat belts!

Also after my parents had split she had a boyfriend that had a car. It was green and I still remember the number plate! I've just checked and it was a Datsun!

WhatKatyDidNxt · 27/11/2020 18:47

We were a 1 car house and in rough order:

Fiesta
Renault (maybe a 16?)
VW Jetta
Renault not sure which, in the 80’s the were v.similar
Ford Orion (jinxed car and it was repeatedly broken into. First time was the day we bought it home Hmm)
VW Jetta
Ford Modeo
Citroen ZX
Peugeot 206

My parents like me get bored of cars quickly. There are probably a few l missed

Not sure if my parents forgave me for ruining their sports car dreams, they had a red MG which l used to be driven round in on the parcel shelf. You could do that shit when l was born! They had to get rid of it in the end

WildRosie · 27/11/2020 19:45

Mum and Dad had three Ford Escorts after the Datsun and a VW Golf. I learned to drive in the VW, heavy steering but quite powerful.

For some reason I often got travel sick in Dad's cars. I suspect it was because he didn't like the windows open so all his cars had an unpleasant stale, mucky smell (sorry Dad!). No such pukey problems in any of Mum's cars though, just a poorly fitted rear seat in the Allegro. Very easy to slide off!

I clearly remember the car of my childhood. A Vauxhall cavalier

Joolsin · 27/11/2020 19:55

Navy Mini Traveller
Fiat 127 - bright yellow with black vinyl seats that burnt your legs in summer
White Opel Corsa with black/grey houndstooth check upholstery that matched my 80s pencil skirt and white stiletto combo - very snazzy!!!
Pewter/gold Seat Ibiza Turbo - great car, went like a rocket
And lots more Minis as second cars.

tigger001 · 27/11/2020 20:02

his and hers BMW
a Porsche for a while but she hated it as she only had little legs and the seat didn't go that far forward
Cosworth
Granada
Supra
Audi 8
Reno (25 I think, it spoke which amazed us it told us if the "fuel level" was low or "rear door" open)

SabrinaThwaite · 27/11/2020 20:06

Morris Oxford
Wolseley 1500
Triumph 1500
Renault 16 (think we had two)
Austin Princess
Vauxhall Victor (I learned to drive in this one - it was a 2300cc, my lessons were in a 1000cc Mini Metro)
Austin Maestro

My first car was a 1967 Mini - loved it and wish I still had it.

SuperFairy · 27/11/2020 20:07

Ooh that’s reminded me, I inherited my grandads Austin Maestro when he had to give up driving. It was the vanden plas model and that too was a speaking car!

adawong · 27/11/2020 20:08

Fords, Fords and more Fords.

pussycatinboots · 27/11/2020 20:09

Red Vauxhall Viva with a black vinyl roof which my Dad bought new when I was 2 - really dodgy clutch cables, the highlight of my childhood being stranded in Rhyl on a Saturday evening waiting for my Uncle to tow us home (Cheshire)
Blue British Leyland Princess - the most comfortable car I've ever sat in and the one I learned to drive in.
Beige Austin Ambassador - truly the worst car I have ever sat in, didn't last long - it was a proper dog egg.
Burgundy Ford Sierra which I went halves with my Dad for.

What makes and models of car (or other motor vehicles) did you have at home during childhood ?
bloodywhitecat · 27/11/2020 20:11

Dad had a Humber Sceptre for a while and a bit later he had a big green Ford Cortina estate but mostly we had no car so used the bus instead.
