From my time on, Dad had a Volvo 145 estate, then a 144 saloon, an Audi 100 then a Datsun Stanza. Both Volvos and the Audi were company cars but he bought the Datsun outright. Mum had a MK 3 Vauxhall Viva, an Austin Allegro, a Chrysler Alpine and, finally, a Fiat Strada. We were fortunate to be a two-car family (also necessary with seven children) but from the mid-80s we just had the one; a VW Golf and a variety of Fords at different times.

Dad's cars were, by and large, tough and reliable. Mum was less fortunate; she'd had enough of the All Aggro after six months and she got a brand new Alpine - whose gearbox failed the day after we got it home! Wot fun. Strada was a poorly-built rustbucket.

Ha we had a Jaguar in the 70's
Early 80's VW Beetle it stank of car fumes and was a bit damp
and then a GolfGTI convertible in silver!

Ford Fiesta A reg with red go faster stripes and matching hub caps 😂

I moved out and bought myself a Fiat uno with recarro seats

CalliopeCat · 27/11/2020 15:51

A Vauxhall Nova for a long time. Bought new, three doors and honestly it got hammered- had everything from carpet to a washer to Christmas trees in it. A drunk driver wrote it off and it was replaced with a Ford Escort in bright blue. Loved that car!

Jasmin82 · 27/11/2020 15:53

We had 2 Ford Escorts. Named Poppet and Poppet 2. because they were the Popular trim.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/11/2020 15:57

None. Neither of my parents drive. I grew up in London, but the suburbs, not central. It wasn't that unusual (late eighties through to early noughties). I even moved to university by train.
First car in the family was when my brother bought a ford Escort (second hand obviously) in about 2006/7.

TheQueef · 27/11/2020 16:00

Hillman Minx.
We called it the cheese car.
It'd previously had milk spilt that soaked in to the fibre glass.

Watto1 · 27/11/2020 16:04

Dad was a sales rep and had a succession of Vauxhall Cavaliers. I was travel sick every time I went in them Envy. Mum’s ancient little Hillman Imp was fine though!

NastyBlouse · 27/11/2020 16:08

We had a lot of Vauxhalls. Several Cavaliers, and then a Senator. Dad switched to Rovers in the 90s.

Mum had Astras, one time a Calibra. (She fancied a coupe but still needed back seats.)

They also had a converted van a Bedford Midi I think that had lots of seats, for when we all needed to go somewhere at once (I'm one of six kids). It was halfway between a people carrier and a minibus. It only got used about three times a year.

WildRosie · 27/11/2020 16:12

Mention of Hillman reminds me that Mum had a dark blue Avenger for a few days while the Viva was away getting repaired. It must have made an impression because she was considering a new Chrysler Avenger estate to replace the Allegro. She plumped for the Alpine instead. It only had a 1.3 engine so was a tad underpowered. Remarkably for a 1970s car, I don't remember any rusting bodywork on the Alpine at all.

My dad was a sales rep too; we had Ford cortina, then later had a citron bx I think. That was our only car. As kids our favourites were the cortina estates and we would fight to be allowed to ride in the boot

BogRollSpiderLadder · 27/11/2020 16:12

My dad had a green mini woody estate (old A reg!), which was passed onto Mum after they got married.

When I was little he drove a dark-ish blue Hillman Avenger estate.

Green Princess, then an automatic blue Princess.

Then a gold Rover, a huge sleek hatchback. Then a lovely blue version, which my brother managed to roll and write off.

We went to Spain and back in some of them! Ace.

In the late 80s Mum made the mistake of trading in the ancient mini for a Metro which had something wrong with it every week. Rubbish.

BogRollSpiderLadder · 27/11/2020 16:18

Cross post with blue Hillman Avenger! I thought that was so random no one would have heard of it!

ExclamationPerfume · 27/11/2020 16:24

Loads. Two different Cortina's, Escort, Sierra, Granada, Audi 80, Austin Princess, Vauxhall Chevette, Mini.

WildRosie · 27/11/2020 16:30

I'd still like a Chrysler or Talbot Avenger, if I could find one in good shape going for peanuts! I'd also like a Riley or Wolseley Elf; for those too young to remember it's essentially a fancy Mk1 Mini with a different radiator grille and extended boot.

Dad's Volvo 145 estate was cavernous, meaning all seven of us plus parents and luggage could quite easily fit inside at summer holiday time. No way would that be allowed now on account of only front seatbelts. It was inadvisable fifty years ago! Beats me why he replaced it with a saloon.

Mini
Mini Clubman
Volvo 240 estate

My parents still have the latter. If I suggest they might get rid of it, then my df says it's as good as it ever was.
Very shortly it won't need tax as a vintage car. Grin

TeenPlusTwenties · 27/11/2020 17:08

Morris Minor convertible with old fashioned indicators. Ivory with a burgundy roof.

Dark green Ford Capri which smelled as was really only used for holidays as Dad had a company car but couldn't take it abroad.

NotMeNoNo · 27/11/2020 17:13

Oh my goodness.
My dad had a thing about DAF 44s. We had at least two of them, a "yellow peril" and a blue one, and then the Volvo version.

Apparently they are still sought after as historic rally cars

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 27/11/2020 17:18

We had a Vauxhall of some description, an Avenger and an Austin Maxi before my dad got a job with a company car that changed every year. Mostly Fords. My mum had a Mini for a while too.

TheFairyCaravan · 27/11/2020 17:22

My dad was a car dealer so we had more cars than I can remember. We had a 3L Capri, Opel Ascona, Opel Senator, BMWs, Rovers. My mum had a Mini Cooper, a Mini Clubman with the wood on, an Opel Manta.

Dad had a red VW Beetle, which he changed to a Datsun estate.
Then he changed that to a mini metro ..

His street cred obviously had gone downwards in his choices of cars along the years....🙄.
Mum had a Ford Fiesta.

PetCheetah · 27/11/2020 17:40

My Dad had a series of Austin Maxis. I remember being so sad when he got rid of one of them writing a note and hiding it inside to tell the new people to look after it!

goingtotown · 27/11/2020 17:51

Ford Cortina
Ford Capri
Datsun Sunny

Drogonssmile · 27/11/2020 17:52

We had a mini, a beetle, a Peugeot 104, a Vauxhall Astra, Ford Fiesta, a golf Gti from about 1982 - 1999 ish. Just me and my mum so didn't need two cars.

My dad had a Ford escort, a Peugeot 205 gti, a lotus esprit, an Audi of some sort, a golf gti, a merc estate, an Izuzu trooper, a merc a class, a Subaru estate, probably missed some. He went through loads of cars.
