Bath or extra large shower?

Just finished an ensuite refurb and now want to remodel the main bathroom. It’s a small space so not enough room for a separate shower/bath.
We’re hoping to stay in this house until we’re ready to downsize for retirement.
Would you remove the bath and replace with a large walk in shower?
We very, very rarely use the bath ourselves.

I definitely would go for a large shower. We bought our house with it only having a shower. It's quite a small one so we are going to change it for a large walk in one.

I think baths are pointless unless you have young children. Even then, I know people with young children who use a shower and not a bath

MrsT1405 · 24/11/2020 18:11

Definitely a shower, baths are over rated.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/11/2020 18:12

Walk in showers are a lot more useful than over bath ones (and safer!)

Shower definitely.

RandomMess · 24/11/2020 18:26

Put in a shower but leave it configured so it's easy to see how a bath could be installed back in.

BradTomby · 24/11/2020 18:29

Go for a large shower, we got rid of our bath years ago, never regretted it.

britnay · 24/11/2020 19:06

how many bedrooms in the house? how many years until you are planning on selling it?

Homemadearmy · 24/11/2020 19:15

If you don't use the bath I'd put a shower in. I love a hot soak in the bath. But if it's not something you do then I'd put a shower in

Swifey40 · 24/11/2020 19:15

Very interested by what others have said! I am in property and have been for over 20 years in a variety of guises. I now help people sell properties that get stuck on the market, and would always advise to keep a bath in the main bathroom. I have always found it way more difficult to sell houses that don't have a bath.

cyclingmad · 24/11/2020 19:41

As your not planning to move for quite some time, design the house to suit you.. best advice I was ever given.

Retiremental · 24/11/2020 19:41

4 beds. 10 years minimum.

Keep the bath, I'd never buy a house without one, I don't have them often but when I do want one there is nothing else that comes close. I prefer shower over bath to walk-in as well.

A friend has been trying to sell a 4 bed house having replaced theirs with a shower and remodelled the room so you couldn't put a bath back in easily and keeps getting feedback that it's putting buyers off. So if you do get rid of it, leave it so it could easily be put back.

RandomMess · 24/11/2020 19:46

For 10 years absolutely the shower you may need to put a bath in for a good price/quick sale.

QuothTheSlothNevermore · 24/11/2020 20:13

If it's just for you, I'd get a shower. If it's for a sale it would have to be a bath, or you'd cut out most families with young children.

DH/I never take a bath, but our sons are scared of shower water in their eyes so only ever do (hoping they'll grow out of that at some point!).

madcatladyforever · 24/11/2020 20:17

I'd have once said BATH!!! But since I turned 50 baths have totally lost their enjoyment you end up hot and sweaty and then have to turn the shower on to do your hair.
I'd replace my bath tomorrow but I'm planning on moving in 5 years so I'll keep the bath for now.

“Put in a shower but leave it configured so it's easy to see how a bath could be installed back in”

This is what I would do.

We literally only have the option to replace the bath with the shower cubicle with exactly the same plumbing etc. Think we’ll go for it!

I only have baths. I never have showers. I would definitely want a bath.

RandomMess · 24/11/2020 21:50

My friend did a lush walk in one that replaced her bath. Very low profile tray, long fixed side panel.

campion · 24/11/2020 21:58

We did and definitely no regrets.

If a buyer wants the property, putting a bath back in isn't major.

lynsey91 · 25/11/2020 09:13

As I said, we bought our house with it only having a shower and along the road from us was snapped up almost as soon as it went on the market and that also only has a shower.

Our bathrooms are small. Not room for a bath and shower and I hate showers over baths.

thebabessavedme · 25/11/2020 09:17

we are having new bathroom fitted next year, the bath will go!, I hate over bath showers which is what we have atm, our last house was big enough for large shower and bath, I used to dust the bath, it was never used.

user1493494961 · 25/11/2020 11:10

I would have a big shower, design your bathroom to suit yourselves, not hypothetical future owners.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 25/11/2020 11:34

I’d always heard that houses with a bath sell better. I think the option of a bath and a shower is best.

WankPuffins · 25/11/2020 12:46

Shower for me.

I've not used the bath for 20 odd years, can't stand sitting in hot water. I love a good shower.

However, it does put off people with kids when it comes to selling. It couldn't put me off - a nice, big shower I'd just get one of those blow baths for my shower refusing 6 year old, but some people do like baths.
