Just when you thought a January birthday couldn't get any crappier... What do people have planned?

I've always hated my birthday being in January. Everyone is broke and depressed after Christmas. And everyone seems to only speak about January in derogatory ways! And now....covid. Not that important in the grand scheme of things, I know, but what are fellow January birthday sufferers planning? Mine's a milestone one too...

Big (dreaded Wink ) milestone birthday the first week of January here.

I suspect it will be much as it usually is, as normally everyone is too tired/poor/partied out etc to do anything, except I won't even see my family who always make an effort to at least do a meal.

DH is panicking as always about having to buy Christmas and brithday presents all together.

A special night/day in doesn't really feel so special after this year Grin

MillieMoodle · 23/11/2020 10:06

Mine's mid-January, usually described as the most depressing day of the year. We don't usually do much to celebrate anyway but I'll be happy with a takeaway and a film this year. Might even take the day off work!

ThatDamnScientist · 23/11/2020 10:12

We are going to chill factore snow park if it is open to celebrate a first half of January birthday.

@Kenworthington

Ds2 has his 18th end of Jan. It’s going to be utter pants. I’ve said to him that if things are a bit more normal by the summer we will have a garden party for him
What?

It will be with that kind of attitude from his own mum.

My son’s was in last lockdown. Party cancelled etc.

But my word - I made the best of it. Loads of presents, real celebratory birthday breakfast, put together a video from friends and family - which he loved, long walk (which he loved less!), his perfect lunch, more presents, film.

Because saved in party etc, really splurged on presents.

Was it as exciting and enjoyable as plans we had? No.
But as his mother, damned if I was going to allow this situation to ruin his birthday

@TheDowagerDuchess

My brother is Jan 2nd and I think he’s just made his peace with it!

I’ve just had a lockdown birthday and his view is that’s what his is like every year!

This is so true! Grin mine is just under two weeks into January and most posh restaurants normally close for their holidays until just after my birthday.

I've kind of made peace with when my birthday is, but my last milestone birthday I was laid up on the sofa thinking I was having a miscarriage... (he's 9 now!) so I was hoping to celebrate this one in style. Saying that, my 39th was amazing with all my friends out for the evening with me. So I'm saying that was my 40th Grin

And all those suggesting I celebrate a half birthday instead, I just can't do it. Its the actual day or it doesn't mean the same to me Blush I'll be initiating my divorce for my birthday actually 😂 and it's a Monday. In January 🤣

We dont know the regulations for January yet, my birthday was a few weeks after the start of the first lockdown where you werent allowed to do ANYTHING (couldnt even go for a drive or a picnic with your household)

Things are way more relaxed now even in lockdown (which will end soon) and with a vaccine coming for the most vunerable they are likely to start relaxing things back quicker too so its not like you cant do anything you are just choosing not to do anything.

My DS birthday is in January (new year) and we are still planning our options to make a day of it for him, no point giving up months in advance and wallowing.

I'm not exactly giving up months in advance and wallowing Grin it's more that early-mid January birthdays are pretty shite at the best of times! So I wondered what others are planning 🥳

I've got a 'milestone birthday' coming up.

I doubt DD will be home from uni this year so I expect it will be a nice walk with a picnic lunch if weather permits, and DH will do something special for dinner.

Same as usual really, except sometimes we go out to eat though not everywhere is open even in normal times.

StoneColdBitch · 23/11/2020 10:59

I have a January birthday and don't mind it - I just use it as an opportunity to get stuff i wanted for Christmas but didn't get. I usually get good presents because people's budgets stretch further in the sales. And I usually go for a meal out.

No idea what I'll do this year, though. If we're still locked down I think it'll be a takeaway and a walk! It's not a milestone birthday so it's not a big deal.

RosieLemonade · 23/11/2020 11:00

My birthday was 2 days after the first lockdown started. Couldn’t even go for a picnic or anything as sitting on a bench was not allowed at the time. Then DD’s birthday is six weeks later so pretty much the same rules. It was miserable as DD was so excited for her birthday party but too young to understand why she couldn’t have it. It broke my heart.
2021 is my milestone birthday. I was meant to be going on a holiday we’ve been planning for over 4 years. I cannot see that happening at all. I never thought we would be having multiple birthdays spoilt!

Meruem · 23/11/2020 11:08

DD is 30 in January. She’s come to terms with the fact that nothing much will be happening. It is a bit shit but everyone’s in the same situation really, as this has been going on so long.

DownToTheSeaAgain · 23/11/2020 13:38

My 50th is very soon. Before lockdown ends. Nothing I can do about it so I am postponing celebrations until an unspecified point in the future. Isn't much option really.

farawayplanet · 23/11/2020 13:44

Mine is in January. I've never celebrated it because people just can't be arsed. Dh was always so negative and whiny about how depressing January was that I gave up mentioning my birthday and it just quietly became forgotten.

Ormally · 23/11/2020 14:50

I have found my people. When I do enjoy my birthday, it often comes as unexpected!

I plan to do nothing for the coming one, but have reserved the right to go somewhere nice for an overnight stay at the point when I can. I will at least take some annual leave around then.

TMIincoming · 23/11/2020 14:55

My birthday is January. Doesnt bother me in the slightest, what with being a grown up and everything.

Jesus. Getting depressed and grumpy about your bitmrthday being in January is pathetic. Worrying about it in November even more so.

@Gingernaut I'm the same day!

Jonsnowsghost · 23/11/2020 15:12

@Gingernaut our birthdays are the same day Grin

I generally don't like having a Jan birthday as no one wants to do anything but I'm consoling myself with knowing that I at least got to do something on my last birthday as it was before covid!

Oh come on!!

This sounds like martyrdom to me. Say that you’d like to celebrate. Take matters in to your own hands!

bellinisurge · 23/11/2020 15:14

I love it. Everyone's pissed off and miserable and I'm not . Win! Win!

HugeAckmansWife · 23/11/2020 16:00

Early Jan here. It is usually pretty rubbish for all the reasons people have said but last year was awesome. Went to Edinburgh on 2nd with dp. All the Christmassy stuff was still there but few people. We had an amazing few days wandering about the Xmas Market, castle, royal Mile etc. I'm guessing it won't be all possible this year but planning to do similar in the future. Restaurants are pointless in early Jan, empty of people and atmosphere.

CorianderLord · 23/11/2020 16:55

Turned 25 in May during Lockdown. DP and I went on a long walk, ordered food from a fancy restaurant, played board games and got drunk 😂

I enjoyed it anyway.

grassisjeweled · 23/11/2020 16:59

DD is 4 in January, we'll have a party over the Xmas period then cake /pizza on the actual night.
