Christmas Cheese

nancybotwinbloom · 22/11/2020 19:39

I am taking a cheese board to my parents for Christmas, they are my bubble.

What do you recommend.

I'm going with nothing is too much.

So far I have

Boursin - my fave
Red Leicester
Normal mature white cheddar
Brie
Camembert

I'm taking truffle honey, onion chutney, chilli jam and grapes. Any other suggestions welcome!

I really want to add some French naturally gooey cheese but I don't know the names of any. Just that I've had them in restaurants and really liked them.

What do you recommend?

Nothing blue please no of us like this.

Also marmite cheese. Another of my faves.

I like a goats cheese, not everyone does though!

ODFOx · 22/11/2020 19:42

Ripe Camembert and Brie are both gooey.

Don't buy the pasteurised supermarket ones: they never get to proper spreading consistency ( in the same way that under-ripe pasteurised Camembert doesn't liquify on baking).

Oooh. I love marks and Spencer's Cornish cruncher with balsamic onions. It's lovely when it's softened from the fridge.

Wensleydale and cranberries

There are loads of different types of soft cheese. Giving you a name would only be helpful if you have access to a decent cheese counter. On the assumption they stock it.

Waitrose has the best cheese of the main supermarkets. Farm shops can be a really good source of local cheese as can an independent deli. I have seen the occasional cheese shop, but they are unusual.

Some places sell on line too. Specialist cheese is not cheap but is so much better than supermarket staples.

nancybotwinbloom · 22/11/2020 19:49

Yes I will get nice crackers.

Yes I will take all of these especially the balsamic onion one!

I will take a blue thank you for suggesting I will make everyone re try it.

I think because I do t like Stilton, none of us do that I just say no to any blue cheese now because of that tang they have.

I'm googling all of these

I would add...French soft cheese BRIE and there is a white stilton with cranberries or you can get one with ginger in it absolutely gorgeous

FunTimes2020 · 22/11/2020 19:51

@GooseberryTart

Stilton Nice Crackers Celery Damson chutney
Grin
midsomermurderess · 22/11/2020 19:51

I like French washed rind, soft cheeses like Vacherin Mont D'Or. It's sumptuous, creamy and oozy. Quite similar is Saint-Félicien and Epoisses (be warned, it's smelly), buttery and slightly grassy. A mature Comte is also very good, nutty and a little sweet.

edgeware · 22/11/2020 19:52

Our tradition is getting a truffle cheese! You can get truffle cheddars. So nice and festive.

yearinyearout · 22/11/2020 19:52

I'd want a blue (Gorgonzola is my fave) and I'm pretty fond of Wensleydale with cranberries.

yearinyearout · 22/11/2020 19:53

Oops sorry missed your comment about the blue 🤦‍♀️

OrangeIsTheNewTwat · 22/11/2020 19:53

You need a crumbly one. Coverdale or, if you like fruit in your cheese, white stilton or wensleydale with apricots is quite festive without being over-sweet. (White stilton/wensleydale with cranberries is sweeter.)

Also, I'd add a smoked cheese & a goats cheese or sheep cheese.

Have a look at this for ideas:

Plus my dad's favourite:

I spend a lot on cheese at christmasBlushGrin

Jamhandprints · 22/11/2020 19:55

You have a good selection considering you are only a few people and people don't eat THAT much cheese.
Edam, Gouda or Emmental would add something.
How about some ripe figs or pommegranites to make your board pretty. You could take a nice port or wine to go with it.

GreekOddess · 22/11/2020 19:55

I've had to screenshot your op as you've just sorted my cheese dilemma 😋

KaptainKaveman · 22/11/2020 19:56

Sage Derby. Fabulous cheese !

happydivorcee · 22/11/2020 19:57

I second the recommendation of Vacherin Mont d’Or. It’s like a grown up version of Dairylea (I mean this in a nice way 😅) It’s almost spoonable in texture.
