Christmas Cheese

nancybotwinbloom · 22/11/2020 19:39

I am taking a cheese board to my parents for Christmas, they are my bubble.

What do you recommend.

I'm going with nothing is too much.

So far I have

Boursin - my fave
Red Leicester
Normal mature white cheddar
Brie
Camembert

I'm taking truffle honey, onion chutney, chilli jam and grapes. Any other suggestions welcome!

I really want to add some French naturally gooey cheese but I don't know the names of any. Just that I've had them in restaurants and really liked them.

What do you recommend?

Nothing blue please no of us like this.

Oh yeah, goats cheese is a must.

You can get a blue goats cheese which is amazing but I can't remember the name.

God, I love cheese 😍

Parking a seat! I'm intending to do a cheese board for myself and dh on Christmas Eve, but I've never had one before so no idea what cheeses to get!

RumJerrySailorRum · 22/11/2020 20:44

Ah, I was going to suggest a drive out to Hawes, but in the current climate I'm not sure you'd get away with it, but it's well worth a visit when this shit is over.

I can also highly recommend an amazing little shop in Helmsley called Hunters.
I'm just outside of Leeds and make the trip especially to both these places just for the cheese under normal circumstances.

[quote jcurve]The best cheese in the whole world is Chaource. It’s a gooey French cheese, a bit similar to Camembert but creamier.

I came on here just to say Chaource! Incredibly gooey cheese. My fave along with truffled brie.

Liverpool Cheese Company deliver. If I was back home, I'd be all over this.

Love figs, mozzarella, prosciutto and honey.

tilder · 22/11/2020 21:12

I've had this cheese sold on the Liverpool website before from a different shop:

liverpoolcheesecompany.com/product/murcia-al-vino-100g/

It's delicious. As is this one (most ticklemore cheese is great)

There's a whole world beyond brie!! If you don't like blue cheese then I would say:
Rocamadour (definitely ticks the goo box)
Cantal
Chabichou
Moulis
Pont l'évêque
Valençay
Pouligny (goat & goo)
Saint Maure de Touraine
Any Tomme type cheese
Saint Nectaire
Reblochon

You can get some nice stuff in M&S like Doux de montagne, Pie d'angloys, Pavé d'affinois. They will be a bit 'industrial' but they're fine.

I've used the Fine Cheese Co a few times, would def recommend them.

velourvoyageur · 22/11/2020 21:14

Sorry yes, bit of a theme there...I'm sure Brit cheese producers could use the support at this point

mummymayhem18 · 22/11/2020 21:43

Roule is a lovely soft creamy cheese with garlic and herbs. Lovely spread on krisprolls 😋.

OrangeIsTheNewTwat · 22/11/2020 21:56

If there's 7 of you, I'd get a really good triple cream. I had a lovely French one a couple of years ago from the local farm shop, can't remember the name of the exact brand but it was something like this one. I could get really fat from that, it's a good thing the farm shop is a long walk away. DH & I had to make a pact not to buy it again until Christmas.

velourvoyageur · 22/11/2020 21:58

Looks unbelievable Orange 😍

CorianderLord · 22/11/2020 23:06

Blacksticks Blue is gorgeous - I don't like Stilton but tried this one and was blown away

Frownette · 22/11/2020 23:12

Lidl are doing a very festive looking mature cheddar wrapped in bronzed wax, haven't bought it yet but may do this week so can report back.

I love marmite cheese as well!

Not sure what to suggest about soft cheeses

haircutsRus · 22/11/2020 23:14

Along with what you've got on the list already:

White stilton with apricots.
Sage derby.
Edam.

It is nice to have a variety of different textures and colours.

OrangeIsTheNewTwat · 22/11/2020 23:19

I've remembered, it was this one. Totally delicious, rich & buttery, it looks a bit like a mini brie but it's really not. We're going to the farm shop again tomorrow... Grin

dodobookends · 22/11/2020 23:21

I second Sage Derby, it is a traditional Christmas cheese.

Frownette · 22/11/2020 23:22

I've just had a Google on Lidl cheese, pic attached - I also want to buy some cheeses for Xmas but was going to leave it til nearer the time. They're doing some nice smaller cheeses as in pic as well. It's my closest large supermarket aside from Waitrose but haven't investigated there yet to see what they do

Harveywoo · 22/11/2020 23:28

Cornish yarg or an ash coated sheep’s cheese mmmm. Just ordered far too much from this place and won’t fit in my pants by New Year but they are obscenely good:

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 22/11/2020 23:28

7 of you for how many meals?

I think you might need to be a little more selective 😂😂 or tell your mum not to bother with the dinner!!

SexyGiraffe · 23/11/2020 21:58

Comté. French hard cheese. The best.

BashfulClam · 23/11/2020 22:23

Sine nice smoked cheese, I won’t touch blue cheese as I think it tastes like vomit (sorry).

nancybotwinbloom · 25/11/2020 18:40

I am so torn now on what to get.

I am really excited about all the different recommendations!

Fucking love cheese.
