I just spent 20 minutes reading about the history of the metre.

Prompted by a question for DS asking "how do they know how long a metre is?"
Bhopal environmental disaster in India. They ignored the alarms and went for a tea break!

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhopal_disaster
I fell into the Bhopal rabbit hole last week.
I was watching a program called, "Seconds from Disaster" and I remembered the disaster vaguely so I watched it. I spent an hour afterwards reading wiki and found news reports about it.

I've also fallen in the "Estonia Disaster" for a while only a few days ago. I had heard of it (only slightly reported in the US where I lived when it happened) from my English husband mentioning it and it was featured on the show. I must have spent a good two hours reading about it too.

For balance, I spent a few hours reading about "Inspector Morse", "Inspector Lewis" and "Endeavor" and all their characters, plots, locations, etc...I remember meeting Colin Dexter with my MIL and her sister at a book signing so I was quite entertained.

David Vetter - the boy who lived in a bubble.

The origins of celebrating a birthday.

Sadhoot · 21/11/2020 02:27

A few months ago I was looking up how much a YouTuber's house cost, which led me to Tattle, a gossip site. I'm now obsessively reading about an influencer I've never heard of. Her life is a wreck and for some perverse reason I really enjoy reading everyone's comments and analysis of her life and daily actions. I have absolutely no desire to start watching her YouTube channel, but I did see a clip where her "mask" slipped which I also found very amusing.

They make their thread titles rhyme, by the way. It's mesmerising!

More recently, I was watching a video about how to efficiently board an aeroplane and why airlines will not adopt more efficient methods.

Isdahl woman - great podcast but infuriating, massive build up but sadly no conclusion to who she was etc
Andrew gosden case, truly odd as was the death valley german one.
Reddit topic about things that american park rangers/search and rescue have come across.
Another reddit discussion about staircases and other spooky structures discovered in the wildnerness, mainly the US. Fascinating and mind boggling how big the country is.

@BittyCharleston

Reddit discussion of Unsolved Mysteries (Netflix) episode titled "13 minutes"... creepy
Can you link this? I can't find it

A simple curious search on veganism sent me down a rabbit hole which ended on a YouTube video called earthlings.
Warning - if you eat meat or are easily effects by animals suffering DO NOT WATCH.

So now I cannot face eating meat or animal products and have to go shopping for stuff I can face. And yesterday I couldn't eat ANYTHING until late evening. Still having flash backs! Won't be doing that again..

Brokenchair1 · 21/11/2020 08:27

Love this thread. Like PP i have also been reading about the plague - the similarities to Covid are fascinating. Also Samuel Peeps diary, filthy bugger.

Spent hours reading about the Roman Empire and who did what and when.

Usually things DD learns about at school will lead me to Google one thing to answer a question and then I'm off down a rabbit hole.

Also worlds tallest person and worlds smallest person.

RedTawny · 21/11/2020 08:35

My instagram "explore" section is full of fitness posts, I came across some where the women clearly had "enhanced" bums.

I started down a rabbit hole a found a page by a dr who does these surgeries. It upset me to be honest, all these (imo) mutilated women, paying thousands for the pleasure of it. Ruining their bodies to look so unnatural. I read horror stories for ages

Baldrickneepheid · 21/11/2020 08:41

Saturday night sorted, I will be investigating most of these 🙂

beenrumbled · 21/11/2020 08:45

The Duggars and Bates mega families . Can't get my head round them and their awful beliefs. But I keep looking. Blush

notheragain41 · 21/11/2020 08:50

I've been looking up Dr Gladys West after seeing a meme about her, awesome.

As I'm watching the crown have done lots of googling of the royal family this week too!

Neotraditional · 21/11/2020 08:51

@Makedo and @Inmyownlittlecorner thanks ladies Smile

StanfordPines · 21/11/2020 08:52

Not much to add, just here for the rabbit holes.

allthesharks · 21/11/2020 09:01

@PullTheBricksDown Saddam Hussein's last meal was rice and chicken. There's even a Wikipedia page about the last meals that people have chosen before execution. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_meal

SabrinaThwaite · 21/11/2020 09:05

I spent a happy few hours on the Dyatlov Pass here which led to the Oslo Plaza Woman, Somerton Man etc.

Hippywannabe · 21/11/2020 09:10

Anyone got any recommendations for some sites to find out/read more about what it was really like for the pioneers?

movingonup20 · 21/11/2020 09:30

More than I can remember, dp is worse. We sit watching tv and get sidetracked by a fact that we are compelled to start googling at the expense of understanding/following the plot of the actual programme!

Dancetherain · 21/11/2020 09:41

I'm glad its not just me with the plague stuff, I am strangely fascinated by the plague and the similarities between then and now.

Recently watched Tenko and spent ages Googling Singapore Japanese pow camps and then Japan itself.

Love Freejinger!

TweeBree · 21/11/2020 09:47

The unexplained disappearance and murder of Tom Brown, an 18-year-old from a small Texas community. There's a new podcast out but I read the print version as it's quicker! www.texasmonthly.com/podcast/tom-browns-body-chapter-1-a-pretty-little-place/ (click on the author's name for the other chapters)

Spent way too many hours googling and reading FB comments about the case!!

HotPatootiebootie · 21/11/2020 10:23

Gravista, I get you 100%. I am also bound due to shielding and all sorts of health issues but I can easily spend 12 hours a day on the Internet. I use fb, Mumsnet (yes I have to set limits) and the rest is researching stuff and getting lost in the net. I am also the same way in things I enjoy . I collect irregular choice shoes even though I can’t wear them and have about 80 pairs.

HotPatootiebootie · 21/11/2020 10:27

Should ad awful that I love crafts and if I find a new one I’ll order the entire loaf of stuff I need to get started. I totally submerged myself for 3-4 weeks and then go back to googling when Im board of it. On the plus side I am quite talented and can knit, crochet, draw, paint, needle felt, wet felt, spin and dye yarn, throw a pot, glass fuse and make really detailed diagram as. I also love baking and cooking so have loads of recipes filled in my head. Next hobby is stained glass, it’s expensive so hoping to get all I need for Christmas.

If you find out what this is called I’d love to know. Mine is so bad I’m going to do a phd for fun as I just love researching!

CertainGecko · 21/11/2020 11:04

The 'Paul is dead' conspiracy theory. It's so bonkers I couldn't stop reading!

ScarletZebra · 21/11/2020 11:54

For anyone interested in the Plague, Channel 5 has just shown a 3- parter hosted by Dr Xand all about the 1665 epidemic that was most informative.

Vinosaurus · 21/11/2020 12:08

Have bookmarked this page for future reference for rainy days with no kids and time on my hands.

My most recent rabbithole was the Searchandrescuewoods posts on the /nosleep SubReddit. Mesmerising and terrifying in equal measure.

Vinosaurus · 21/11/2020 12:10

@ScarletZebra yes, watched that - really interesting - and sad. The story of the village of Eyam was incredible, so selfless.
