If you had to move to USA right now, where would you go?

Sure they still have a terrible virus issue, but Trump is out! This is imaginary btw - for anyone who is like me and goes "ooh a relocation thread" (I always find them fascinating).

If you had to pack up and move to USA, flights and accommodation fully paid for... where? It's for a good 2 years, more if it works out. You get a decent flashy flat in a city or a little house in suburbia, a really big place if you're happy to go rural (I know I know this does not reflect the vast price differences across a place so big but im still not going to be silly enough to say you can get a house in manhatten, say).

I used to be:

  1. New York all the way! Love the city to death. However, I have left my 20s behind and city life in general so I was thinking..
  1. Bay area on outskirts of san fran. But the prices are so ridiculous It's almost worse than new York and the wild fires are getting worse and worse, plus I've decided I really like proper seasons.

So, take 3!

  1. Colorado. It's so outdoorsy, love the mountains, the fact you can have a proper family life there. Ok so parts of it are quite conservative but they voted democrat this time and I find it an interesting place regardless. Yes, ds, dh and I would make do there for a bit.

Who's next?

Where did Trump get the lowest % votes? There! (Unless it's got a cold climate!)

CityDweller · 20/11/2020 10:30

I lived on the West coast for years when I was in my 20s/30s. If I were to move back now I’d go east coast - NY, Mass, etc, as that’s where most of my family and friends are now.

TankGirl97 · 20/11/2020 10:32

I'd go rural Washington or Oregon (NE) or Maine (NW). All dem leaning, nice and green and close to Canada!
I know DH would want New Orleans all the way so we'd have a battle on our hands!

kittykat35 · 20/11/2020 10:33

Vermont!! EVERY TIME!!

BestIsWest · 20/11/2020 10:34

Seattle or outside of (ie Washington like a pp)

LemonBreeland · 20/11/2020 10:35

Westchester, north of New York. only an house into the city by train, but lovely suburbs to live in.

SoupDragon · 20/11/2020 10:36

Sanibel Island.

Seattle/Pacific Northwest always looks amazing and is next on my holiday destination list. But Oregon is a very cool, left-leaning state with a slightly different way of thinking than others particularly in regard to healthcare.
But I do like the sound of Colorado and the mountains.
I used to live in Virginia Beach and that was a nice life too - beach, bay, boats. And not far from DC if you need a bit of culture. Inland Virginia is gorgeous.
So many choices!

lastqueenofscotland · 20/11/2020 10:40

San Diego, I lived there for a short while in my late teens and always feel like I left a bit of myself there.

Portland (Oregon not Maine) or Philly, cause I’m an insufferable hipster

Crakeandoryx · 20/11/2020 10:42

North East and New England area. Salt Lake City area of Utah, Northern California up to Washington State.

RusholmeRuffian · 20/11/2020 10:43

Tucson, Arizona or the Outer Banks, North Carolina

RunningFromInsanity · 20/11/2020 10:45

Somewhere rural and mountainous and scenic.
Colorado or Arizona etc
Maine always sounds cute though.

motorcyclenumptiness · 20/11/2020 10:45

O I'd move to New York in a heartbeat

HmmSureJan · 20/11/2020 10:45

Florida - Gulf Coast or Keys.

Next choice - Ketchikan, Alaska.

AgnesNaismith · 20/11/2020 10:45

California

beguilingeyes · 20/11/2020 10:50

Canada :)

Sohardtochooseausername · 20/11/2020 10:51

The Bay Area if it wasn’t so expensive and on fire and under threat from The Big One.

Boston is nice.

devildeepbluesea · 20/11/2020 10:53

Hawaii.

WindsorBlues · 20/11/2020 10:53

Connecticut a little town like Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls.

Wishforanishwishdiash · 20/11/2020 10:57

DH and I got carried away trying to sell Boston as a uni destination to our sixth form DS last night. We got a little bit dreamy and reminiscent. We met while doing postgrad work in Boston.

We put the boy off Boston forever. That is where I would still go.

mayflowerapplepie · 20/11/2020 10:58

Hawaii. As far away from the government as possible.

zafferana · 20/11/2020 10:59

I wouldn't move back there again - six years was enough! In explanation ...

The problem with California, Oregon and Washington is wildfires and the weeks of smoke in the air, so beautiful though it is I wouldn't move there.

The NE is lovely in the Fall, but winter is long and cold, the skiing is mediocre if you're used to the Alps, and summer on the entire Eastern seaboard is stinking hot and humid.

The middle bit is Trump country.

IntermittentParps · 20/11/2020 10:59

Portland, Oregon (although Portland, Maine is nice too)
or Austin, Texas.
Or Brooklyn.

I am a walking middle-class middle-aged cliche and proud Grin

Ooh love so many of these! New England, or Oregon/Washington state. Have visited relatives in North Carolina - absolutely gorgeous if a bit gunsy... would absolutely love to visit the outer banks.

Pyewhacket · 20/11/2020 11:03

New Hampshire.
