Reusable pads

Do any of you ladies use reusable sanitary pads? What do you think of them? Are they comfortable/absorbent? I am considering making the switch as lately disposable pads have been making me very itchy and uncomfortable. My DD is 13 and we have been chatting about reusable sanitary pads and she'd be interested when her periods start. So I was thinking we could start this journey together. Any recommendations of brands would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you wanna try something fairly cheap and cheerful try earthwise from earthwise girls. They aren't the slimmest or the fanciest but it saves you the hassle of working out shapes and sizes and backings amd toppers before you decide if you like them or not.

I'd definitely recommend them I cant stand the idea of ever going back to disposable...

LuckyAmy1986 · 18/11/2020 13:48

I use BloomandNora. They are very comfortable and never had any issues with leakage, stay in place too. They are expensive at first as you have to buy a load but you will make a saving in the end. Plus it's better for the environment. I would never go back to disposable.

MrsG30 · 18/11/2020 13:53

Yes I made the switch when periods returned after having DS 3 years ago.

I got a pack of 6 cheapies off the internet first just to try, and loved them.

I now have a mix of:

Still the internet cheapies (good for just start of/end of period)
Bloom and Nora (like their nighttime ones a lot)
Earth wise
Cheeky wipes

I don’t find any particularly thin, but tbh since moving to reusable, I can’t bear how thin disposable pads are and panic I’ll leak.

I’ve never worried about them showing through clothing, as I usually have some sort of long top/cardigan on that covers my bum

I use Bloom & Nora, Cheeky Wipes & Moominz. They're all great, really absorbant and don't move around. They're all different shapes so worth figuring out what suits you best.
I've got referral codes for Cheeky Wipes & Moominz if you'd like.

I've been using reusable sanpro for many, many years. I started with a Mooncup, but a few tears ago, switched to pads.

I have some by Cheeky Mama. I bought them about three years ago, when they were the only ones I'd heard of, so I didn't really shop around.
They are ok, but I do find they slip round, unless you wear the right pants!

Last year, I bought modibodi period pants and I prefer them tbh. Sometimes, at night time, I wear the CM pads with the modibodi pants and that works well. Annoyingly, modibodi pants have to be washed cold, apparently! I ignore this advice tbh, as I'm not doing a whole wash for just a few pairs of pants. I chuck them in with everything else. They have got a bit worn as a result, which is annoying.

One other thing to consider is that you need to carry the used ones round with you all day. I work from home, so it isn't an issue, but you would need to have a plan if you WOH all week. They do sell wet bags, so you can just put them in there, but a few changes in a day means you would have a few to carry. So you couldn't wear them all day without a handbag or anything. If you're used to disposable pads and tampons, you might be used to popping a spare or two in your pocket and that being that. It isn't a bad thing, just something to consider.

whatsbinhappnin · 18/11/2020 13:56

ModiBodi underwear are great, very comfortable, great quality and don't show under clothes

They also have a teen range

hellswelshy · 18/11/2020 13:57

Yes both me and dd's use them. Not sure of the exact brand, but got them off Amazon for about £15 for 10. Was intending to get more expensive ones if we got on with them, but they are brilliant. My dd's struggled with the rinsing of them to start with, bit squeamish I suppose, but mainly okay now. They are so comfortable!

hellswelshy · 18/11/2020 13:58

Sorry we use the reusable pads not underwear, just to be clear.

StripyTigerTail · 18/11/2020 13:59

A few years ago*

MusicWithRocksIn1t · 18/11/2020 14:03

I recently swapped to reusable pads and recently bought period pants. I used a combination for my most recently period at night time as mine are really heavy for a day or so and I didnt have a single leak. The pads are fantastic though I was getting nasty rashs from the disposables too and they were reasonably cheap off amazon and cake the next day

Siennabear · 18/11/2020 14:06

Yes use combination of menstrual cup and reusable pads. Took a few months to get the hang of the cup but so much better. Would never go back to disposables again. It’s great knowing it’s better for the environment and not paying out every month.

NannyR · 18/11/2020 14:07

I've used reusable pads for years, after trying out several brands my favourites are Imse Vimse. I thought I loved them (and still do prefer them to disposables) but I've recently tried out period pants (cheeky pants) and they are an absolute game changer, I wish I'd bought some a few years ago when they first came onto the market, they are so comfy.

busybanana · 18/11/2020 14:13

I switched to reusable pads about a year ago I think. I find them a lot more comfortable and absorbent. I haven't shopped around though, so I couldn't tell you which brand is best, but I use Cheeky Wipes and I've been very happy with them.

BiBabbles · 18/11/2020 14:21

My 13-year-old and I both have a set of these cloth pads for menstruation. Comfortable, handle my fluctuating flow time, easy to 'wrap up' for laundry, and were great for me some years back when I had issues with stress incontinence.

Frazzled13 · 18/11/2020 14:30

I use the cheeky wipes ones but the cotton cloth ones rather than the bamboo. I find the bamboo ones really thick, plus the backing on them is silkier so they move more on your knickers. The cotton ones are thinner and stay put better imo.

Tararararara · 18/11/2020 14:32

Do they feel like you are wearing a nappy?

Pre kids I used a mooncup on the very odd occasion I had a period, but I cannot bear the thought of anything up me now so have reverted to pads but I hate, hate, hate them! I'm on the minipill so rarely have periods but they are becoming more frequent and they make me so miserable!

firstimemamma · 18/11/2020 14:33

I use cheeky wipes period pants, would really recommend them.

Defender90 · 18/11/2020 14:37

I use pads from Izzy Wizzy Roo. Highly recommend really absorbent and great service.

Neighneigh · 18/11/2020 14:43

I use these - www.ladydaysclothpads.co.uk/

I really like the material, both in terms of comfort and the designs which are really fun. They have a popper to keep them in place and the side facing your pants is fleece, which also stops them moving around too much. If you want to try a small independent maker, I do recommend them. (Am not related to her! Just really like them).

thecuriousfox · 18/11/2020 14:46

Wow thanks everyone. Lots to look at and think about. I'm determined to go for it and am quite excited about it! Can you tell I don't get out much??! Thanks again Smile

Soubriquet · 18/11/2020 14:47

I do.

Mine are called eco lily and bamboo barn. I wouldn’t go back to disposables now

They are bulkier so that takes some getting used to, but they are so much more comfortable

Whatwouldscullydo · 18/11/2020 14:56

Do they feel like you are wearing a nappy?

When I first started out I was worried about this so I went for the things I could find and yes the realky thin ones like lady days etc are fab

But I was really pleasantly surprised at how comfortable even the bulkier ones can feel. You can still quit easily forget you ars wearing them and I guess as they are thicker you kinda don't get "the drop" so much.

Maybe not best if you are going out in leggings but they don't show through in jeans and are just what you need on a crampy day when you are in jogging bottoms witg a hot water bottle...

frugalkitty · 18/11/2020 15:03

I've got a few wearemout pads which are lovely and soft and very absorbent, although I'm still using tampons as my periods are very heavy. They wash well. The only negative is that the binding around the outside is quite 'firm' so if I've been sat down a while it can be slightly uncomfortable. I think it's a case of trial and error to find what suits. I have the mega mega pads but I'd prefer something even longer (and I think mine have shrunk a bit)

Emmelina · 18/11/2020 16:02

They’re lovely. I always got thrush or at least irritation and soreness every month from disposable pads.

binnhill · 18/11/2020 16:09

I use them and do my three daughters. Much more comfortable ,and save money in the long run.
You can get different sizes and patterns.
I git ours from eBay and amazon
