People threaten to boycott Sainsbury’s over their Christmas advert

because it’s an all black family Hmm

I don’t like the advert. But that’s because I think it’s a rubbish advert, not because the family are black

Wtf is wrong with people? I can't get my head around their mindset. Confused

BlackeyedSusan · 17/11/2020 14:28

I wonder if they complained when everything was wall to wall white people with blue eyes and blond hair?

Soubriquet · 17/11/2020 14:30

@BlackeyedSusan

I wonder if they complained when everything was wall to wall white people with blue eyes and blond hair?
Exactly!!

Every year 99.9% of adverts feature white people. This year it features blacks and people lose their shit

Apparently it should be more diverse and mixed!

Meh. Those suggesting the boycott will be a tiny minority of racist twats.

Sainsbury's won't be mourning their loss.

Don't give them the air time by bothering to discuss it

Shouldershrugger · 17/11/2020 14:34

I love it

KumquatSalad · 17/11/2020 14:35

I’d imagine a backlash from the ‘PC gone mad’ brigade can only be positive publicity for sainsbury’s.

isitsnowingyet · 17/11/2020 14:40

Daft - I might even go TO Sainsburys - their food is generally too expensive for me to do a normal weekly shop. But I do like the clothing bit.

theneverendinglaundry · 17/11/2020 14:40

I think they must all be energy vampires like Colin Robinson.

It amazes me that people still have these actual thoughts. We've still got a long way to go

pastandpresent · 17/11/2020 14:47

Op, calling black people "blacks" after calling white people "white people" is a bit rude for someone who are angry at others.

Lemonylemony · 17/11/2020 14:48

Honestly, racists can tweet and ‘boycott’ all they like, I doubt Sainsburys are genuinely worried about any impact. I mostly judge the journalist/media for making any kind of news story out of a few racists posting on Twitter and asking Sainsburys for a response. Sainsburys should decline to comment, these people should not require dignifying with a response. Block/ignore/report. Don’t bloody amplify their voices in the media. This isn’t news.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 17/11/2020 14:48

I know I'll get a bashing for saying this but whatever. I hadn't even registered the family was black, we saw it the other night and my dd said "Oh my God that is sooo dad"
We are white.
If I was boycotting Sainsbury's it would be because do much of their food is short dated, not their choice of family representation. Hmm

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 17/11/2020 14:49

I was relieved to see it. For months almost all the families in adverts have been from mixed marriages. I find it really lazy, trying to appeal to too many people all at once. Almost as if the advertisers were afraid to show a family where all members were black.

Glad to see one with just a black family.

Soubriquet · 17/11/2020 14:51

It was nice to see their family routine, I just thought it was a rubbish Christmas advert Grin

My favourites are amazons, Disney’s and McDonald’s.

I hated John Lewis’ too

I was so shocked when they posted it on Twitter how many outrageous racist replies they had. People that clearly had zero shame in their racist thoughts publicly posting! It’s truly awful there are people in our society that genuinely feel this way towards other people

Soubriquet · 17/11/2020 14:57

Times like this when I understand the phrase “it’s not just anti racism to say you’re not racist. You have to call it out too”

I did boycott Sainsburys once. However it was because of the child that couldn't sing to save her life that was blasted out of all the speakers as well as on TV. A couple of years ago I think.

SpillingTheTea · 17/11/2020 15:54

I've seen that advert so many times and never have I even considered the race ffs.

Steamfan · 17/11/2020 16:07

Not having a TV I've not seen the ad, so have looked it up on line - I really like it! I was going to do my shopping there as they don't sell fireworks, but have realised that as my brother (who is a rampant racist) will def. not be going there then I most definately will!

WaterAndTheWild · 17/11/2020 16:14

Is this really the first ad with a black family in it?! I just can't believe that would be true (and how sad if it is)..

frazzledasarock · 17/11/2020 16:18

Last year there was a huge furore over Tesco including a (blink and you'll miss it) asian family with women in headscarves in it.

We're all meant to assimilate, but when the media portrays non white people doing normal everyday British things, apparently we're taking over and Britain is no longer white anymore.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 17/11/2020 16:19

What can I tell you? Some people are just bigoted, narrow-minded little pricks....

wibdib · 17/11/2020 16:23

Haven’t seen the ad yet but that’s a crazy reason to think for a moment of boycotting Sainsbury’s.

Haven’t seen many Christmas ads yet this year - the only one I actively don’t like this year is the Tesco (I think) one saying there is no naughty list - just seems to be condoning greed and bad behaviour as well as storing up trouble for parents who have kids that listen to the advert and seize on it as an excuse to be badly behaved. Just really didn’t see the point. Plus I didn’t like the way they’d done it, even if I had liked the theme so an all round thumbs down from the grumpus over here in the corner!!

VladmirsPoutine · 17/11/2020 16:39

Surprising that so many people were shocked at the negative/racist reactions it got. People like to bang on about how racism doesn't exist in the UK, or say something along the lines of the UK being the most "tolerant" or some shite like that but this ad was absolutely going to generate outrage.

Lemonylemony · 17/11/2020 16:53

I guess that’s my issue with this article - it’s not calling out racism. The word “racist” only appears in embedded counter-tweets. If the article actually called out the racism on display, rather than just publicise it, then I could get on board. If Sainsbury responded with “we don’t care about the views of some racists on Twitter, they’re racist and wrong”, then I could get on board. This article..... doesn’t exactly call out racism. IMO.
Holothane · 17/11/2020 17:04

Well I’m not boycotting what is wrong with people the adverts a bit met, but nothing do do with the people in it, the dad one, that’s going to hit people hard this year. Argos have tu clothing so I’m happy
