Has anybody used this app?
I've had it for a while and finally bought a magic bag to be picked up tomorrow evening from a local Nisa.
I would be interested to hear what other people have recieved in their bags and if it was worth it for you

(For those who haven't used it, the app is designed to reduce food waste. Local shops or restaurants advertise "magic bags" for a low price but what you get in them is unknown until you pick it up)

Following with interest... I've also had it for a while, but am yet to take the plunge!
However, I've been using Olio for some time and it's fabulous. Since Tesco got on board with them, there is a lot more food available for collection locally to me - and it's all free. In more urban areas than mine there seems to be loads of stuff available, especially at the end of the day. Thoroughly recommended.

PodgeBod · 16/11/2020 01:24

Ooh I'll have to try olio as well. There's not much in my area either, unfortunately 😕

I have had a few bags of pretzels from Auntie Annie's or whatever it's called. Really happy with what I get for under £4 (usually three pretzels mixed sweet and savoury ).

FlippinNoah · 16/11/2020 02:05

Yes I have used the app, got a few Sunday dinners for £3 each from a local pub chain, good value. Had heard about Morrison's doing brilliant boxes on there (pre- first lockdown, don't know if they still do them) but getting one was like gold dust.

PodgeBod · 16/11/2020 07:56

FlippinNoah They still do them, I've seen them under bags I've missed

Ooooh - I use this A LOT. Every week pretty much. Near me there is a Morrisons that use it - however we gave up getting stuff from them as the quality became truly appalling - mouldy bread etc, the last lot was so bad I complained to the manager (didn't give a stuff) and TGTG and got a refund. Never did them again. There is a local Budgens that has started recently and they are excellent - a bit more pricy but some really good stuff, meat, good quality pudding, good quality veg. When I was in the office working a friend and I used to nip over to a local hotel and grab a breakfast occasionally too. It really is a case of try it - don't be put off if your first one is a disappointment (our very first one was from a local independent cafe and was awful) try other places. I have an absolute hatred of wasted food so think this is an excellent idea.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 16/11/2020 08:43

I've had a Morrisons bag. Mostly bready stuff, a pack of mushrooms, kiwi fruit and blueberries. We don't eat much bread so most of it went to the birds, and it's put me off getting another one. I think it was 3 loaves of bread, 2 packs of burger rolls and a pack of bagels.

30not13 · 16/11/2020 08:47

Tried it for the first time last week. It's only Costa so far in my area. I was slightly embarrassed to be picking it up I have to admit, I was afraid the staff would be judging but she just smiled and directed me to the bags and said help yourself. There were 3 packed up ready and I didnt realise that they have a receipt on detailing what was in each si you could actually choose the best for you.
Mine had a pigs in blanket panini, vegan xmas dinner toastie and a blueberry muffin for £3.

I wouldnt go out of my way to get another but if I knew I would be passing by I'd do it.

CakeUpWall · 16/11/2020 09:26

Morrisons seems to be permanently listed as Just Missed. Nothing else on mine still, but there aren't many outlets around here.

I've checked Olio this morning too, and our local Tesco contributor has listed loads and loads of doughnuts - now forcing myself to ignore those!
I get bags of washed spinach from there most weeks; they're fab as they go straight in the freezer and I use it every day in smoothies, curries etc from frozen. Some days I get 2 or 3 big bags of food, then share it around with friends & family. (Lockdown permitting)
Love Olio! Smile

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 16/11/2020 09:47

Morrisons - the slots open up just after the end of the current days collection time, and go in minutes. So you have to be waiting on the app, keep refreshing, and pounce.

PodgeBod · 16/11/2020 18:56

Update:
My bag contained a load of Hovis best of both, today's date
2x 8 co-op brand sausages (tomorrow date)
2x strawberry muller lights (2 days)

Its OK I guess, if it was a local shop I would do it again but I went quite a bit out of my way to try it Grin with 3 kids in tow, I wouldn't do that again. The bag cost £2.
While I was out 3 local branches of morrisons have offered bags, 2 went straight away but the other one still has 4 available. Its too far for me, though

*a loaf

CakeUpWall · 16/11/2020 22:26

Thank you for the update. Based on that, I don't think I'll bother with Morrisons tbh (it's quite a drive for me anyway.) Thanks for being the guinea pig though. Smile

ProseccoLush · 16/11/2020 22:33

I think it depends on the store for Morrison’s. This was the one we got last week which we were more than happy with. Think we’ve only managed to get 2 or 3 from them in the last year that we’ve had the app.

BeforeLight · 16/11/2020 22:33

I had a box from Morrison’s today, it contained:

Bunch of bananas
4 kiwis
3 mangoes
1 pineapple
Green beans
Rubber beans
Pack of fresh green chillies
Mushrooms
Breakfast mushrooms
Cucumber

Think that’s it. All of it is date, earliest use-by date was 18th! So impressed, was our second one and will definitely do more from there. Guess it depends on the store

Takingabreakagain · 16/11/2020 22:39

I've had a Morrisons one but I don't know if it was typical of what people normally get. It was mainly meat /chilled stuff. No fresh fruit or bread (except for some wraps) which is what it seems to be advertised as. I ended up having to give some away on olio because I couldn't use it all within the day and it was not all freezeable.
The stuff I could use was good though and well worth the money.

amicissimma · 16/11/2020 22:41

I've got it but everything they offer seems very carby: bread, cakes, pasta, pastries etc. so I've never used it.

Blueuggboots · 16/11/2020 22:54

Oh I love it!!! Picked up a goody bag from a bakery the other week for £5...it was HUGE!!
Quite often get the Aunty Anne's ones too.

PodgeBod · 16/11/2020 23:31

All of those Morrisons bags look so good! If I can mange to nab one in a reasonable distance I definitely will

OP posts:
Joditaylorfan · 16/11/2020 23:35

We got the budgens one for £5. It was pretty good, but made me remember that I am actually quite fussy. Some sandwiches, veg, fruit, yoghurt, sausage rolls. Not bad value if you can use it all.

PodgeBod · 18/11/2020 16:55

@CakeUpWall I hope you don't mind me tagging you but I got a morrisons one and as guinea pig, I wanted to report back Grin
I paid £3.09 and got:

strawberries
grapes
cucumber
jumbo salad onions
bunch of bananas
corn on the cob
radishes
baby plum tomatoes
apples
prepared sprouts

none are reduced/ on date, nearest is dated the 20th. I'm so incredibly chuffed as this is all stuff we regularly buy or wanted to try (radishes). Not sure the kids will like the sprouts but worth a try Grin
Would definitely get morrisons again!

OP posts:
PodgeBod · 18/11/2020 16:57

forgot an iceberg lettuce as well!

OP posts:
PodgeBod · 18/11/2020 16:59

and three large normal onions- wish we could edit on here

OP posts:
bearlyactive · 18/11/2020 17:04

Mine are very limited options, looking at my app now the nearest one is a couple of miles away, and the next nearest is 4 miles away! I'm also a bit nervous because I've got lots of food allergies, I could very easily get a bag of stuff I'm allergic to Grin

PodgeBod · 18/11/2020 17:14

Yes that's a risk, I'm quite a fussy eater so I was wary as well but my kids will eat most things so I decided to give it a go. Luckily we don't have allergies to consider though. Its a shame you can't ask for allergies to be excluded
