Is this normal (work related)?

I started a new job on Wednesday and realised that my new line manager had sent round my CV to all staff members by way of introducing me.

Not sure how I feel about that as hadn't actually given permission for my CV to be sent out?! Personal contact details were redacted but even so.

Is that normal? It's not something I would have ever done with a new starter (certainly not without asking first), and I've done a lot of onboarding.

This is so weird OP, I really don’t think it is remotely normal no. I wouldn’t like it either.

TheBugHouse · 14/11/2020 22:57

Thats awful!!

Smallwhiterat · 14/11/2020 23:05

Depends, I had a CV I used to submit if I was speaking at a conference that would be part of the paperwork pack introducing speakers etc - was very normal in my industry. I would have been happy to have that circulated, it was more a couple of paragraphs on my experience and areas of expertise. My normal CV used for recruitment purposes detailing all my qualifications, every previous job with dates etc, no that’s not remotely normal or acceptable.

The thing is it's the fact they never asked? I'm quite a private person and it's just made me feel really uncomfortable.

That would be fine and I'd expect that in an introductory email (though I'd expect to draft that myself!), but this was my entire CV of the kind you'd use to apply for a job.

That’s very unusual. In fact, I’ve never heard of it in all my 40 plus working years. There are some people who speak at conferences etc who provide a tsiloted sort of cv for associated papers etc but never the whole cv, and certainly not without the person’s permission.

AliceMck · 14/11/2020 23:13

No not normal. Maybe a summarised version letting your new colleagues know your work background but not a full cv. Just lazy and I’m sure not HR approved.

Sussexroadleyst · 14/11/2020 23:14

OK I'm glad my instincts on this were correct. It isn't like there is stuff on there I want to hide, I just don't feel comfortable with it being sent to 20 colleagues whom I haven't even met yet.

Also am sure it is a bit dodgy data protection wise tbh!

There have been other things that have made me Hmm but this was the first one.

Ideasplease322 · 14/11/2020 23:23

Odd, I have never seen this done. Did it include your home address and contact details?

I have seen pen pictures circulated but never a cv.

Ideasplease322 · 14/11/2020 23:24

Also, was date of birth on the cv?

Sussexroadleyst · 14/11/2020 23:26

No, my DOB was not on there but it wasn't on the original either. Never include DOB on a CV!!

Contact details were redacted but full details of my employment history and education with dates were all there.

Seems strange to me.
What are you going to do about it?

Have you had sight of all your colleagues' CVs?
Seems only fair you should have a peek at theirs too as a reciprocal "getting to know you" exercise.

Hope you will make your feelings known, albeit "after the event".

stanski · 14/11/2020 23:32

Surely it's the same as someone looking at your LinkedIn? Wouldn't bother me in the slightest tbh

Ideasplease322 · 14/11/2020 23:32

Education with dates allows people to guess your age.

People in my work are obsessed with age and knowing who has Egypt to such and such a level by this age or that. I hate it the fishing questions.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 14/11/2020 23:32

Not normal, and must be bordering on a breach of GDPR.
It's a bit lazy at best, as well as thoughtless.

I guess you can hope nobody read it...

If you plan to raise it, you could always offer to write something concise, covering what you bring to the role.

Sussexroadleyst · 14/11/2020 23:34

For me it isn't at all. My LinkedIn is way less detailed. I don't like social media.

OP posts:
Sussexroadleyst · 14/11/2020 23:35

I will definitely raise it.

TokyoSushi · 14/11/2020 23:37

Nope, very weird!

purpledagger · 14/11/2020 23:37

I've had the CVs of new colleagues shown to me before. But then I work in HR, so my HR colleagues often take a close interest in who we recruit for our own teams.

Kneehighinshit · 14/11/2020 23:38

This is a big breach of GDPR in my eyes and incredibly unprofessional. It has information on it about you that you have not consented to being shared with those individuals. Everyone's now knows your full employment history and that is not right. Raise it now or they'll have bigger problems down the line.

Sussexroadleyst · 14/11/2020 23:38

I work in HR too and have always been very careful about sharing CVs. This is something I would never have done, certainly not without checking first.

murmurgam · 14/11/2020 23:41

Have you had sight of all your colleagues' CVs?

I've worked places where all emplyees cv's are available on the intranet

Sussexroadleyst · 14/11/2020 23:43

I haven't seen anyone else's CV and I wouldn't expect to either.

OP posts:
helloxhristmas · 14/11/2020 23:45

I actually don't think it's that weird, they could google Or LinkedIn you anyway.
