Would you attend a peaceful protest if a convicted paedophile moved into your street?

I’ve never attended anything similar before and I’m in two minds about going. He was convicted (I’ve read the newspaper articles which show his photo) and has been released after serving half his sentence. I don’t know if he owns the property but he’s moved in with his wife who stood by him. There’s a peaceful protest being arranged. Would you go?

OP posts:
ivfbeenbusy · 12/11/2020 10:29

I'd be more concerned about the wife and that he has stood by him

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 12/11/2020 10:30

this thread shows that some people are ok with it, or believe because they served the time they are ok now.

No it doesn't Confused

It shows that people understand the law, and the complexities of driving paedophiles away until they are no longer on anyones radar. Nobody has said they are ok after time served either.

howaboutholly · 12/11/2020 10:31

It isn’t intended to be insulting but if that’s the outcome, so be it. The language you use tells me a lot. Nonce, paedo, are unfailingly used by those who like to whip up hysteria and indulge in very nasty vigilante type attacks.

Horrible words. I judge.

howaboutholly · 12/11/2020 10:32

You’ve linked to the meaning of “especially”.

PawPawNoodle · 12/11/2020 10:36

If he is serving a sentence for rape of a child he isn't being released halfway through his sentence, FYI.

I wouldn't attend but I would be surprised he's granted permission to live there by Probation.

CoronaBollox · 12/11/2020 10:36

I am terrible with links apologies😂

What a stupid comment.....everyone uses 'paedo'

dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/nonce

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/11/2020 10:37

Nope. And I also reported all of the local facebook posts about one who lives close to me.

I don't want to live in a place here vigilantes and angry, self righteous people take it upon themselves to protect me. That way lies madness!

ivfbeenbusy · 12/11/2020 10:38

I agree. Also OP said he denied doing it and it was my understanding that you only get a reduction in sentence if you plead guilty?

howaboutholly · 12/11/2020 10:40

No, they really don’t peaches

It is a horrible, casual word used by the stupid.

Corona “nonce” comes from prison. It is from where convicted sex offenders can’t go outside with other prisoners because of the danger - not on normal courtyard exercise - hence it was used as prison slang ‘suchabody is a nonce’ - and seeped out into everyday usage.

It really is unpleasant.

CoronaBollox · 12/11/2020 10:44

I linked to the cambridge dictionary definition of nonce.

A person who commits a crime involving sex, especially sex with a child

It's an accurate term.

Hayeahnobut · 12/11/2020 10:45

@howaboutholly The CPS use the term paedophile.

I find that those who call others 'thick' only do so, because of their own limited vocabulary. It's ok to make sweeping generalisations like that isn't it Holly?

howaboutholly · 12/11/2020 10:47

Just because a word is in the Cambridge dictionary doesn’t make it a word that is acceptable to bandy about. The N word is in there, FFS. (I’m not going to link to it, for obvious reasons.)

Parkperson · 12/11/2020 10:47

I know of one such protest(lots of shouting, not peaceful). It was on a housing association estate. A local councillor moved around the group of protestors, many of whom told him where they lived. A few days later those protestors housed by the HA received a warning letter about vigilante behaviour.
In fact the only people living in the house were family members, not the offender who was still in prison.
The Law is there for a purpose. If you don't like it then fight for change but don't decide to break the law by harassing someone who has a legal right to live somewhere.
Human rights at home: Guidance for social housing providers
Everyone has a right to live safely without fear of anti social behaviour from others.
Your protest would come under the heading of anti - social behaviour.

howaboutholly · 12/11/2020 10:48

I didn’t object to the term paedophile. I objected to paedo and to nonce.

Because they are casual. They are flippant. They minimise a serious issue by use of slang. They are used by people who do not understand what they mean (hence confusion about paedophiles and paediatricians) and do not know their history.

CoronaBollox · 12/11/2020 10:49

Oh ffs holly clutching at straws now. It's a perfectly acceptable description of someone who has sex/abused children. Branding people thick for using a word that has the correct definition, is well, quite thick.

SoupDragon · 12/11/2020 10:50

What a stupid comment.....everyone uses 'paedo'

What a stupid comment - of course "everyone" doesn't. I don't for one.

I wouldn't attend a protest - at least he is a known risk, unlike the ones who have not been caught.

....you are funny
Nicknacky · 12/11/2020 10:51

MrsJungelow I have more experience in dealing with victims of sexual crime and offenders than you will ever realise.

I’m discussing the use of your word “fiddle”. I would use that word to a victim of crime as it’s appalling

BananaPop2020 · 12/11/2020 10:52

@howaboutholly honestly, don’t waste your time. I have already put too much energy into this post which is just totally lost on some of the mouth frothing, vigilante types present. They don’t want a rational, balanced conversation as they are not capable of having one.

howaboutholly · 12/11/2020 10:53

corona NO ONE is clutching at straws. What straws precisely am I clutching at?

I am very sorry if this offends you, but paedo and nonce are not words you tend to find being used by people who take the sexual abuse of children in any way seriously. They are most unpleasant and tend to be used IME by people who either have poor levels of education or are unpleasant themselves.

ClaireP20 · 12/11/2020 10:53

Of course not, what on earth is the protest hoping to achieve?

howaboutholly · 12/11/2020 10:53

Point proved really then isn’t it peaches? Nothing about the sexual abuse of children is funny. Nothing.
