Asking for a friend - how much would you pay for a painting like this of your dog? (photo and painting attached)

She has painted this for a friend and its gone down well - to the extent that others have seen it and want her to do a painting for them. She has no idea what to charge.

No idea but she's a great artist.

I would prefer a different background but the dog looks awesome.

How long did it take/how much are materials? If she wants to turn this into something that makes money, that should be the starting point.

If it was a bespoke portrait of my dog I'd pay up to £250. It takes hours of work to accomplish something like that

I don't really want to say how long it took at this stage as that might steer the answers - looking for gut reactions. I will say how long later... (sorry to be initially vague)

She's a very good artist and has caught the character of the dog beautifully.

She needs to charge hourly rate X number of hours, plus materials. Reasonable hourly rate charged by myself and other artists I know is £30.

She first needs to work out how much it costs to make one, her time, packaging and postage/delivery etc. Etsy might give her a good idea for prices but make she works out her costs.

I probably wouldn’t pay more than £75 but that’s to do with what we can afford not a reflection on quality

It absolutely does if she wants to earn money from it. There's no point charging £50 for something which takes you three days because you're never going to earn more than £100 a week.

Did she do it on a phone app or something? If not she needs too work out an hourly rate.

So guessing it took a minimum of 10 hours, it would be £300 plus materials.

Okay - its by my 18 year old daughter (she is trained up to A level). It took her >20 hours

I think its worth a minumum of £150 too but didn't know it I was being super biased

A friend of mine does portraits. He generally charges £40-£90 depending on how long it'll take, the level of detail, amount of people/animals, how many photos he's working from etc.

He did a beautiful one of me & my Dad for my 30th. Dad had died earlier in the year & I didn't have any pics of us together.

It is relevant how long it takes. Why cheapen just how long something like this takes.

Hours of detailed work should be rewarded.

Lots of people are prepared to pay a lot of money for a portrait.
