@Holly and you are correct: both effect and affect can be nouns and verbs. They just have different meanings and that's why they get confused.

I hadn’t even noticed that. Just skimmed over the mug and went straight to comments!

I wonder if maybe this is actually a passive aggressive mug designed to make SPAG pedants feel really, really out of sorts.

@Catabogus

I quite like it...but I think the split infinitive would irritate me too much if I had to drink from it.
Maybe the teachers could use it in lessons on split infinitives as well!! Brew

Currently drinking tea from mine.

I prefer this one. Short and sweet.

To be truthful I’m not really a SPAG pedant, and I don’t think I’ve ever been an arse to or about anyone on account of their making a mistake or not knowing the meaning/usage/correct spelling of a word. I just like to get things right as much as possible, since English is my second (actually third) language. I do make an effort to learn as much as I can and to do justice to the beauty of the language. It doesn’t help that I learnt American English first so I’ve had to re-learn a lot of things since moving to the U.K.!

Anyway, I think I’ll go for a Christmas mug or two instead if I buy some anytime soon. Xmas Smile

@MandalaYogaTapestry

Affect is totally an action!

Eg., How would a job loss affect your lifestyle?

It was more the 'an action' which made me think they were saying a noun, Eg 'a jump', 'a run'. Affect is a verb. Well other than when it's a noun of course.
