Someone's sent me a sex toy via Amazon...

GreenMarkerPen4myHen · 09/11/2020 12:06

I'm a relatively new poster under this username but I've been on Mumsnet forever (Korean lady, penis beaker, Pom Bears). I know this sounds very odd but I swear I'm not trolling, or lying.

So last week I got an Amazon parcel addressed to me and there was a sex toy inside. I didn't buy it and there is no record of it in my Amazon orders page. However, I did browse it a few months ago. My husband didn't buy it for me either - I have asked! So who sent it?

Could Amazon possibly be rewarding my loyalty by sending me a gift and they kindly selected this sex toy for me? It's unlikely but I can't see any other explanation - maybe some stupid algorithm came up with the idea?

I'm a bit spooked out because the truth is, I have been toying with the idea of buying this thing; however, I haven't searched for it on Amazon (or elsewhere) since well before March. Can Amazon read my mind...? I haven't spoken about it to anybody either.

Or do I have a secret admirer and they thought this would be a good way to show their affection? Grin My birthday was a few days before the delivery and I think that might be linked.

This a mystery.

Could a friend have ordered it for themselves but accidentally have had it delivererd to you? I did it recently where I'd sent something to a friend intentionally but her address had set as my default without me realising so when I next ordered something it went to her by mistake.

She was most bemused to have a large bag of tandoori spice mix turn up. I only realised the error when she told me Amazon had delivered spices instead of a laptop stand she had ordered.

She would have been happier with your parcel rather than curry powder (though the 2 should definitely never be mixed up).

Did you check your bank account for any payments coming out?

I like that it's wearing a tuxedo. I'm a big fan of formality and frankly would be horrified if a vibrator didn't have the courtesy to wear a dinner jacket before it got me off.

I got a bottle of Olaplex from Amazon last year. I'd ordered a £2 canvas wallet for my son to use for school so I think I did quite well out of that error. Yours is still better though, OP!

DaisyDreaming · 11/11/2020 17:55

Have you ordered something else and not received it? Today I got a ‘jewel too’’ in with an item that had been orderer, it had either fallen in or been added by accident. If I were you I would check to see if you have anything you haven’t received, my friends DVD was once swapped for an Arabic dictionary!

CorianderLord · 11/11/2020 19:43

This is usually a type of scam. Companies send them to people and if they're accepted they can list them as fulfilled orders and boost their exposure to buyers and their rating on the site.

Google Amazon brushing Sivan.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 11/11/2020 22:44

This is usually a type of scam.

Do they deliberately choose a potentially embarrassing 'personal' item, that people might just pay up for rather than logging it with Amazon or whoever as a disputed item and drawing more attention to the item, rather than something like a set of mugs or a jigsaw? But surely you'd be less likely to leave a review showing your name if you had ordered it, much less than if you had no knowledge of it?

I'm reminded of that scam they had in Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels, where they took orders for similar 'personal' items by mail order (that they never actually had in the first place) under the name of 'ATFF Shop' (or something like that), but then wrote to their customers 'regretting' that they'd had a supply problem and sending a refund cheque from the full company name of 'Arse Ticklers Faggots Fancy', relying on customers being far too embarrassed to ever pay them in. That has to be one of the best lines in a film ever: "Nobody wants their bank manager to know that they tickle arse!" Grin

WingBingo · 11/11/2020 22:47

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll the scammers leave the review, not the recipient.

Frollocks · 11/11/2020 23:07

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll The scammers pay for the item via gifting and leave the review in the name of the recipient who might not have an Amazon account to begin with.
They gift it so there's no paperwork with the item. It can only be traced by the alpha numeric code on the packaging and Amazon won't reveal who gifted it cos "gdpr".

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 11/11/2020 23:38

Ah, thanks, Both - that makes a lot more sense.

GreenMarkerPen4myHen · 12/11/2020 07:48

Thanks for your comments! I'm sorry I haven't been much in touch, I've had a crappy few days and this thread has cheered me up.

Nikhedonia, that is not the toy I have, it is a different model. Penguins in a bow tie are not my thing - I prefer something more butch. This is the odd thing, it is as if someone had read my mind!

Is your one lifting little weights?
StarlightLady · 12/11/2020 10:24

Purchasing and owning a vibey should not be embarrassing. We should all own at least one and be proud of it.

Frollocks · 13/11/2020 13:47

Today's "gift" 5 pack toner cartridges for Brother printers - £40 on Amazon.
Don't have a printer of any kind and have never searched for toner.

BarbaraStripeshand · 16/11/2020 13:41

What I want to know is how the scammers get your address? Some dodgy mailing list or something?

I have never had anything but after reading this, want the vibrator that the OP got - some of the Amazon reviews are hilarious: Grin

Clear your schedule. Soundproof your house. Make sure you have rehydration drinks handy and maybe book some time off work. Then prepare for your soul to leave your body and for the tsunami to begin as you make the most of a toy that was sent by whichever diety you worship to ensure your time on earth was worthwhile.

I have decided to buy one for every woman I know. If my nan wasnt dead, I'd even get HER one! Hell, I may buy one for her anything because if anything can bring her back from the dead, it's this little beauty!

Hm2020 · 16/11/2020 14:01

Is this very clever marketing because it’s now in my wish list and may even make it in to basket

SBTLove · 16/11/2020 14:09

@GreenMarkerPen4myHen
Amazon can trace the order from the QR code on the packaging, go into your Amazon account and contact them through the chat facility. The yellow label is for sorting in the warehouse.
