I need a sofa on finance but I can't wait 17 weeks!

I've looked at DFS, Sofology, Wayfair etc.

Minimum delivery time is 17 weeks.

Is this due to the rona? I'm sure it used to be 6 weeks max!

I'm unsure about wayfair because of the difference in quality. I'll have a look at some reviews x

Noticed a long lead time on furniture in general. Not helpful because I worry the store won't be around in 12 weeks or whatever.

Wondering1215 · 08/11/2020 00:15

@thriftyhen we've had 2nd hand sofas for years. We've always passed them on via freecycle and the like. I know what you say about killing the planet but we recycle everything we can. We will break down our old sofas when we get new ones and keep some of the wood for the boys to do 'projects' on. The rest we will take to the recycling depo. I promise you I am not wasteful!

What do you mean blockage? You mean factories being closed down and working at half capability do to distancing, or the fact other manufactures like the wood and material they need are also operating at half mast?

Do you think they’re just playing games?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/11/2020 00:36

Google "foam shortage UK." I can promise you factories aren't doing this for fun.

ZappBrannigan · 08/11/2020 00:43

Try HomeSense/TK Maxx. I picked up a sofa for £350 this year. They gave me the name of local man with a van who picked it up and delivered it 2 days later for £25

SpinningWheelOfFortune · 08/11/2020 00:53

We have a few shops near us that have 'factory second' type sofas, fair enough you do have to drop on something you like but they're there and ready to be delivered straight away. Maybe theres something similar where you live? Although not sure they'll be open at the moment but they must have websites/Facebook pages etc.

ZappBrannigan · 08/11/2020 00:59

*assuming they are allowed to open early December

Wondering1215 · 08/11/2020 01:03

@bluebellsgreenbells I don't remember mentioning blockage. If I did, I apologise. I was just curious as to why in particular the delivery times are so long.

@Waxonwaxoff0 I never considered that. Pardon my ignorance.

I suppose my first thought was 'surely they want my business!'

I was ignorant before reading these replies. My apologies!

Check the clearance page on sofology - they are in-stock cancelled orders & returns. You might like something there?

40somethingJBJ · 08/11/2020 01:53

My dads just ordered one from Argos and it had a two week delivery time.

Movinghouse2015 · 08/11/2020 07:49

Next do some nice sofas. You could set up an account to purchase it initially and then transfer to an interest free credit card. They are promising delivery before Christmas. You can request colour swatches to chose material.

Nonamesavail · 08/11/2020 07:51

Get a preloved one...even if just till feb

ukgift2016 · 08/11/2020 07:53

We just brought a sofa on DFS, gutted by the 16 week delivery but it can't be helped. They must be so busy and Covid not helped.

We can't afford/want too pay for a sofa outright so DFS way to go.

Roselilly36 · 08/11/2020 08:00

We had to wait 12 weeks a couple of years ago when we replaced our sofas, so I don’t think it’s just down to COVID.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/11/2020 08:00

Could you 'untie' some of your savings?

Assuming they're in cash and not shares that are currently low in price, any loss of interest is likely to be low and a lot of banks are allowing people to take money from fixed time products early because they need the money due to corona related income loss.

(Tip for the future - if you have savings, always make sure a few £k is in instant access cash for situations like this. What if your boiler needed replacing or car needed a lot of work?).

Velvian · 08/11/2020 08:13

You need the Next clearance section. I get a beautiful massive corner sofa within 5 days for half price. I think someone had ordered it and then pulled out when it was ready.

Their full price sofas also have a massive variation in lead times depending on the fabric. When I was looking some were a week or less. We did eventually order a small sofa to match the clearance one and that took about 3 months (and was more expensive)

DianaT1969 · 08/11/2020 09:00

John Lewis hold some stock in the UK. I think they offer a finance plan or card.

wisheduponastar · 08/11/2020 09:35

I got a 5 seater corner sofa from next for £600 as it was ex display and we took it home the same day. Worth keeping an eye out

Bluntness100 · 08/11/2020 09:43

Op it really is better to wait and pick a sofa you love, that you’ve had a chance to sit on etc and see in real life, rather than rush to limit your choice to what can be delivered immediately.

I guess it’s for Xmas or someone visiting? You can easily just say you’ve new ones coming if you’re embarrassed.

78percentLindt · 08/11/2020 10:16

There are quite a lot of sofa including corner ones on our freegle and freecycle sites at the moment. Some only 2 years old.DS picked up a good 2 seater for £20 on his local FB selling page recenly, and an ikea ponang(?) chair on his local freegle.

murmurgam · 08/11/2020 10:25

I'd look on eBay or Freecycle and see if you can pick one up as an interim measure. If you're going to spend 1500 then don't do it in a rush and compromise based on what can be delivered. Especially if you require finance to spend that 1500 in the first place.
