Do bite proof sippy cups (with valves) exist?

My twins are pretty intense chewers - we’ve been using NUK hard spout cups for about a year. They chewed them but they mostly held together. Had to replace a few, nothing too bad but now they’re all unusable so I bought more. Even though the spouts are removable you can’t buy just the spouts which is annoying, but I bought new cups.

They change the design frequently but these new ones are shocking. See photos - DT1 (nickname Jaws) managed to squash one between his teeth in less than a minute. This is what happened to the one I left him with while i was on a phone call.

They’ve obviously changed the material as they weren’t this weak previously.

I feel like we’ve tried every cup in existence. Can’t use straws, anything with a silicone / rubbery seal like a 360 cup is broken in seconds, literally.

Is there anything out there that exists that will last more than a day in my house?!

This is just one of many issues we are having (can’t find anything for him to sleep in he can’t remove or chew through) but most pressing as I have no other ideas!

Have you tried the £1.50 tommee tippee ones?

SinkGirl · 07/11/2020 19:49

You mean just the normal ones with the push on top? They manage to spill them by shaking them - the problem is they are severely delayed in many areas, but also very good at figuring out how to get around things.

I bought some other TT ones which had a great valve, but the spouts were covered in silicone type stuff which they chewed off instantly.

What I need are really solid plastic ones like these that don’t just squish when they bite them - the NUK ones used to be great but whatever they’ve done to them they’re now useless. Really frustrating!

I suspect there isn’t anything but if anyone has found anything let me know! I can’t be the only one with this problem!

Thanks all - haven’t tried the Oxo ones, will get some. The Haberman ones I got lasted less than five minutes - there’s a little rubber bit at the top of the spout that stops spills, somehow they got that out.

360 cups are broken as soon as they go near them.

The ones with the bit in the middle that depresses, they just push that down and pour drink everywhere for fun.

I think we’ve tried every type of TT cup but will see if there’s any I missed!

Morrison's do a hard clear plastic bottle (with designs painted on) with a hard clear plastic flip-up spout. There's a small initial spill as you tip it upside down but it's really hard to make it spill after that - I've just tested!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 07/11/2020 20:38

My DD, who chomps everything, hasn’t managed to kill the Boots basic sippy cups. They don’t have valves, and they spray droplets if you give them a good shake, but she hasn’t managed to get the lid off (she’s 6).

NotAQueef · 07/11/2020 20:41

How old are they? Any reason why not an open cup at home? Otherwise have heard the munchkin chew proof cups are good, but no personal experience

SinkGirl · 07/11/2020 21:00

Thanks all, they are 4, both autistic - they can’t use open cups although we still try every bath time. They drink during the night so need to leave cups with them otherwise we’d be up and down even more.

I think I’ve tried something like those Morrison’s ones from home bargains or similar - does it have a straw inside? They haven’t quite got the hang on those yet so they tip them when drinking which causes a few issues. Will persevere though.

Will try the Boots ones, thanks :)

If I had the money I’d start a whole range of products for kids with ASD, learning disabilities etc - we have issues with so many things!

There are so many tiny little things that people with non-disabled children don’t even realise are issues. Eg, open cups. Hahahaha - as if.

How about a Klean Kanteen bottle with a sippy cap? They are very hard plastic and spill proof. And you can buy just the spouts to replace.

Was just going to suggest the same thing!
helloxhristmas · 07/11/2020 21:54

No from experience, not ones they can take to bed and not leak. Sorry

FlibbertyGiblets · 07/11/2020 21:54

I wonder SinkGirl if you contacted NUK customer services they might track down a box of the 'old style' ones for you?

To be fair, the OP hadn’t mentioned that their children were autistic when open cups were suggested.

Have you tried a sports cap? Someone recommended to me some kind of metal bottle with different tops you could buy - from teats to sports caps. They were expensive but at least only the tops would need to be replaced.

SinkGirl · 07/11/2020 22:24

Thanks all - will try a Kleen Kanteen, didn’t realise they did sippy cup spouts.

The NUK ones don’t spill unless the stopper underneath comes out so have been really happy with them - gutted they seem to have changed them. Will try contacting them and see if they have any old stock left. Have scoured the internet but can’t find any of the older ones.

Yes. It’s a constant struggle with some things - toys and clothes especially, beds were a nightmare until we got specialist ones from social care. Thought I had night time clothing sussed when I bought some specialist fleece onesies that zip down the back - DT2 managed to somehow chew through the zip on the back of his calf on both suits. Also broke several sleeping bags chewing on the zips... sigh. Don’t even get me started on chew toys (how can they break so easily when they’re designed for aggressive chewers?! Over £10 each... FML). Thank god for DLA, that’s all I can say - he broke over £100 worth of stuff in a day a few weeks ago. He doesn’t intend to be destructive but he can’t help the chewing, bless him.

@modgepodge Apologies, I wasn’t intending to have a go at whoever suggested open cups to the OP. Was just thinking aloud about all the basic things most parents can take for granted.

Eg, my daughter’s 6 and her room is basically a cell, with a few soft toys, because we can’t have anything she could hurt herself with overnight.
Holidays are a puzzle because there’s no way of keeping her safe in a standard bedroom.

Hercwasonaroll · 07/11/2020 23:10

Third/fourth the kleen kanteen suggestion.

My 3yo has taken one to bed since 18 mo and not a drop has spilled and there are a few bite marks but the plastic is so hard he hasn't got through it yet.

SinkGirl · 07/11/2020 23:16

The safe beds we managed to get from social care OT can fold down into a large suitcase (and come with an air mattress) so we will actually potentially be able to go on holiday (has never happened yet but maybe one day!). Before them every night was a living nightmare - they were still in cots, throwing their mattresses out, pulling out slats, occasionally escaping through the gap left by the missing slats, climbing and falling.

OT came and recommended toddler beds with Deryan bed tents, but they learnt to unzip them. We found a way to stop this, then DT2 (the less daring one!) folded his sprung mattress in half, climbed out through the small hole in the base of the bed tent, climbed the sofa bed in there, found a tube of nappy cream I’d put high up on a shelf, put it in his mouth then fell off onto his face.

We got the beds on loan from a charity and now social care have ordered permanent ones for us. We have Safety Sleepers but there are other similar brands. They are thousands though, hence the need for social care help to get them.

There’s also something called the Safe Night Net designed to fit over the Ikea Kura bed. That was our plan but can’t fit two in their room.

So if you haven’t tried social care OT it’s worth asking - if you could get a Safety Sleeper or similar you could take it on holiday!

That’s amazing - ordering two right now!

I really hope they work for you. As a PP said, the bottles are metal so even if they chew through the top, that bit is about £3 to replace so not quite so bad.

Your bed situation sounds tricky. You've got two very creative and inventive children!
