How to make house smell nice?

NoEffingWay · 07/11/2020 14:46

No pets, one messy child and dp smokes outside but I am always convinced the house smells of cigarettes.
Currently have a candle burning constantly (when in the house and awake), have 'shake and vac'd' the carpets and febreezed the sofa's and chairs.
What else could I do to ensure that the house doesn't smell like an ashtray?

Open a window?Smile

Twickerhun · 07/11/2020 14:52

Open your windows every day. Fresh air beats chemical every day

TheSpottedZebra · 07/11/2020 14:53

Ltb.

But honestly, his clothes, his hair, he, will reek of smoke.

amymel2016 · 07/11/2020 14:53

The best thing for houses is to give them a good airing, each day if possible. Open all the windows and doors for 20 minutes and it’ll clear it all out. A bit harder in the winter but we’ll worth it!

Other than that keeps any soft furnishings well hoovered, if your DP wears a coat to smoke outside could be leave that in the garage or somewhere not in the house?

NoEffingWay · 07/11/2020 14:54

I air the house out every day, and yes if only to let the chemicals out Grin. I have the nose of a bloodhound which doesn't help.

I have windows open most of the day or the vents/windows set to be cracked open
Diffusers in each bathroom (reed ones)
And I burn wax melts and candles
If I wipe down the doors or skirtings then I tend to use a method spray to make it smells nice
My friend always comments how nice books/gifts/anything from my house smells 😂

amymel2016 · 07/11/2020 14:54

Sorry for the typos!

oneglassandpuzzled · 07/11/2020 14:55

Don’t use plug-ins, Yankie Candles or zoflora.

Open windows.

timeforanewstart · 07/11/2020 14:56

Why no plug ins or yankee candles ?

peaceanddove · 07/11/2020 14:56

Febreeze and Shake N Vac is s no good. You need to actually get stuff properly washed. So carpets professionally cleaned. Curtains and sofa covers dry cleaned. All woodwork wiped down. Bedding changed every week, and always air your bed when you get up in the morning. Regularly open a window. Regularly put out fresh towels. Don't let dirty laundry pile up. Regularly empty bins. Only when your house is deep down clean should you deploy the scented candles, otherwise you're just trying to mask odours (and failing).

JocelynSchitt · 07/11/2020 14:56

Smokers smell. But they can’t smell their smell. Unless he changes his clothes and showers after every cigarette, it will always smell.

Have you tried spraying him with fabreeze when he walks back in? Grin Or subtly suggesting he stops what is slowly killing him?

But whats the point? As he still smokes?
canigooutyet · 07/11/2020 15:01

I have cats, and I smoke in the house.
Visitors are always surprised as there's no smell.

I don't do anything special. I don't leave food waste in the house over night. I don't have carpets. Crack open a window or more every day, room doors open to try and get a flow of air going.

Make sure the drains aren't smelling and clean the bathroom, toilet and kitchen every day. Also controversially I wash my bedding more than once every 3 months Grin I find it's these rooms that make a place have a bit of a smell.

Cleaner product - whatever I have that was on offer the last time I bought some that's designed to clean and pet friendly.

Appuskidu · 07/11/2020 15:12

We have a nice diffuser from Next-smells lush!

Just to clarify I do the following: Bins emptied every day Beds changed every week Washing clothes done every day Bathroom cleaned every week, toilet every day Hoovered every day Kitchen clean always House aired

The febreeze et al is on top of all of that Smile

I use a humidifier op. And essential oils in it, mine lasts for about six hours when I switch it on, before needing to top up with a small amount of water snd s few drops of essential oil

My favourite just now is amber snd ylang ylang, and everyone comments, but you can buy basically any essential oil you wish from bubble gum to lemon.

It’s much cheaper snd more effective than a candle and you can leave it unattended.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 07/11/2020 15:24

Love Airwick plugins

Valkadin · 07/11/2020 15:29

When you say house aired every day what do you actually mean. We have small windows open a tiny bit in every room all day every day. The downstairs ones get closed at around 6 pm. Upstairs ones have been shut once when it was minus 17.

My sister has asthma she used to use those plug in things as her husband smoked mainly outside but still inside sometimes, her husband died so no more smoke smell and no more plug ins and her asthma improved loads. I am not suggesting you murder or get rid of your DH but he is the source of the smell.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/11/2020 15:39

  1. Insist he removes all his clothes before going outside to smoke.
  2. Make him stand at the bottom of the garden.
  3. Ensure he wears one of those face visors to help contain the smoke.
  4. Douse him with Zoflora before allowing him back into the house.

You should find that item 1. will reduce his level of smoking during the winter months. Wink

Bluntness100 · 07/11/2020 15:40

I can’t do those plug ins, they give me a terrible head ache, as does anything artificial, ie shake n vac etc

I’m surprised at how effective a humidifier is, the whole of my downstairs smells lovely, and it’s as cheap as chips because you only need a few drops of essential oil in it.

You can buy them for about twenty quid on Amazon. I’d not buy the multi pack of small essential oils though, buy the bigger bottles, the mystic ones are good on Amazon and just do smells you like. As said, I like adding a few drops of ylang ylang with a few drops of amber, I also quite like the peppermint one and the vanilla one, you just add a few drops of whatever you fancy and make your own smell basically.

pineapplepalmtree · 07/11/2020 15:42

you need a Lampe Berger :)

Drawmelikeoneofyourfrenchgirls · 07/11/2020 15:43

Air the house every morning for a good while. Spray furniture polish on the radiators when the heating is on, makes the house smell lovely!

TheVanguardSix · 07/11/2020 15:46

I want to know more about this Lampe Berger!

Savourysenorita · 07/11/2020 15:46

Wax melts /burners are really strong and far, better than diffusers for strength of smell. They last for a bit after blowing them out too. As others said open windows as much as possible. I always use bleach to clean too.

Same as my mum. On inhalers for years. Then my dad gave up smoking and she has barely used one in the ten years since.
