How to make house smell nice?

NoEffingWay · 07/11/2020 14:46

No pets, one messy child and dp smokes outside but I am always convinced the house smells of cigarettes.
Currently have a candle burning constantly (when in the house and awake), have 'shake and vac'd' the carpets and febreezed the sofa's and chairs.
What else could I do to ensure that the house doesn't smell like an ashtray?

Fresh air
Oil diffusers are nice - white company have lovely oil blends

Maybe his smoke from clothes is on the furniture?

Bluntness100 · 07/11/2020 15:49

Air the house every morning for a good while. Spray furniture polish on the radiators when the heating is on, makes the house smell lovely!
Doesn’t that just make your house smell like furniture polish?

Once I've cleaned the house, I run the hot taps, and drip a few drops of spearmint essential oils in the sink. The steam seems to spread the scent and it's lovely.

SwedishK · 07/11/2020 15:55

Please bear in mind that most scented candles contain paraffin wax, which is derived from petroleum, coal or shale oil. When it's burnt, paraffin wax releases toxic compounds into the air, including acetone, benzene, and toluene – all known carcinogens. So not only are they damaging the environment but our health, too.

i have the maison berger- lampe berger from France, it was used to burn in hospitals and purify air, clearing smells and killing germs. its alcohol based catalytic burner and now they sell perfumed alcohol to go with them.
its very effective. I came across it a few months ago when I walked into a shop that smelled lovely with the scent filling the room much more than any other oil / candle would. I also use one to clear out kitchen cooking smells quickly.

weatherheather · 07/11/2020 16:02

A few tumble dryer sheets on the radiator for half an hour when the radiator is on!

As I cook a lot I always wonder if the fabric around the house absorbs some of the smells, particularly downstairs (curtains, sofa, cushions, etc). I wash them relatively often ...just in case!

This!! I don't know how people use all this scented stuff without worrying about what they are breathing in.

Busydrinkingcoffee1 · 07/11/2020 16:15

Tumble drier sheets behind your radiators and carpet fresh your carpets twice a week!

NewCatMummy · 07/11/2020 16:16

Open windows as much as possible. Clean bins, carpets, bedding, laundry etc. Don’t use those horrible artificial plugs ins, febreeze or air ‘freshener’. Proper pure essential oils from actual plants are good- not the same as blended or artificial fragrance oils (bubblegum?!). The smell from the smoker will be a big issue unless he changes clothes and showers every time.

ChasedByFox · 07/11/2020 16:21

Ditch the febreeze- the stuff is rank
Open the windows

Could he have one fleece for smoking in, so he's covering his clothes, and it's left as close to front or back door (or even outside back door?) so the smell is minimised? Wash it regularly (fleece dries v quickly)

rocketspin · 07/11/2020 16:25

Your DP needs to stop smoking and you need to cut down on the chemicals and get some fresh air into the place.

PrettyinPink80 · 07/11/2020 16:33

Febreeze him when he comes in from smoking! 😂🚬, we used to Febreeze our dad.. Sometimes when he was having a kip on the sofa then I'd wash his coat and tumble dry it before he woke up, he still doesn't know and we still do at times! Detol have bought out a really nice air fresh cleaner spray, that nice, I also like to use insnse sticks if I have a smoker over, they all smoke in the garden but yes the stink finds its way into the home to 🚬😉

PrettyinPink80 · 07/11/2020 16:34

We also bought dad a smoking jacket, shame they went out of fashion as they are great!, 👌😀

This. It's not fair on your DC or pets to make them breathe in all three extra chemicals! That goes to all the posters on here. Also not all essential oils are safe for pets.

As a chandler this is categorically incorrect. Please don't believe the paraffin is bad for you rubbish.

I can't imagine that it's a desirable chemical to be adding to the air in your house.

Sheknowsaboutme · 07/11/2020 16:57

He will smell. They all do.

I love candles. I buy a lot of locally made ones to support small businesses. Im a sucker for wax melts too.

Sometimes an open window will not suffice. Houses smell.

His smoking is worse.

Mabelface · 07/11/2020 17:03

Nag Champa incense

Crakeandoryx · 07/11/2020 17:08

If the smell is on his clothes it doesn't matter what you do it will always smell. The only real way is to get him to give up.

We don't smoke and moved into a house where the previous owners only smoked outside the house. The paintwork was fine but the smell was in the wardrobes, carpets etc.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 07/11/2020 17:08

I can't bear to be in a house with any kind of plug ins, diffusers, sprays, scented candles etc. Far more irritating than the smell you are trying to mask. They all make me feel a bit ill.

Avoid deep frying or greasy frying, air the place out.

walksonthebeach · 07/11/2020 18:55

@Bluntness100

I can’t do those plug ins, they give me a terrible head ache, as does anything artificial, ie shake n vac etc

I’m surprised at how effective a humidifier is, the whole of my downstairs smells lovely, and it’s as cheap as chips because you only need a few drops of essential oil in it.

You can buy them for about twenty quid on Amazon. I’d not buy the multi pack of small essential oils though, buy the bigger bottles, the mystic ones are good on Amazon and just do smells you like. As said, I like adding a few drops of ylang ylang with a few drops of amber, I also quite like the peppermint one and the vanilla one, you just add a few drops of whatever you fancy and make your own smell basically.

Do you mean a diffuser? I love mine, lemon is a fab essential oil. It's so fresh.
