We do, we have loads. But I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time we used any of them (with the exception of Christmas films and cds which we use every year) It will have been YEARS ago. Yet I can’t get rid of them!! Help!

For years we had 100s CDs and many DVDs but nothing to play them on as we (legitimately) stream most things.

They were all stored in the cupboard under the stairs, except two which we used to keep birds off our lawn when it was reseeded.

Then we bought DD a CD/DVD player for her birthday and it's brought a whole lease of life to our old music and films.

JustAPassingFashion · 07/11/2020 12:30

We did have until about three weeks ago.
I had boxes and boxes of CDs yet hadn't actually played one in years thanks to Spotify.

Then we had a new TV unit and decided not to put the DVD player as it hadn't been touched in years... a few days later we realised the DVDs we were hoarding weren't required now we had nothing to actually play them on 😂

Everything we want we can find via the TV thanks to Netflix and Prime so they were just collecting dust!

Sparklingbrook · 07/11/2020 12:31

I have loads of CDs and in my old car had a CD player and played them all the time. I had a new car about 3 weeks ago and it does have a cd player but it's in the glove box. Confused so I have to get modern and sort out Spotify I guess. It has Apple Connect or something?

DVDs-in boxes in the garage. We don't even own a DVD player anymore. I don't know what the local charity shop situation is re DVDs.

TeenPlusTwenties · 07/11/2020 12:31

We have around 300 DVDs. We prefer them to just streamed stuff.
DD watches things time and again, so they prove good value for money.

Not great music listeners, but again have CDs for the car (musicals or 20thC stuff mainly).

MaudebeGonne · 07/11/2020 12:31

I still have CDs in the car Blush. My 11 year old has a cd player in the room and listens to music on it. Use DVDs occasionally for films and series that aren't on any of the streaming services we use.

SuperPixie247 · 07/11/2020 12:34

I still have cassettes for music! DVDs though? Stoneage... Grin

DelphineWalsh · 07/11/2020 12:35

No, haven't had any for about 5 years now donated to charity. I kept 1 which was a signed copy of a RHCP album by the band but I eventually sold it. Everything is on several hard drives or watch listen on streaming sites.

FippertyGibbett · 07/11/2020 12:36

I threw my cassettes away when CD’s came in. I so regret that now.

LunaNorth · 07/11/2020 12:36

I have two exercise DVDs that I use in the bedroom as our bedroom telly has a built-in DVD player.

DH has a few music DVDs he still watches and still listens to CDs (old skool).

TeenPlusTwenties · 07/11/2020 12:37

I have a cassette player in my kitchen as part of my Christmas 1983 boombox that fits nicely at the end of the worktop. It still works.

Thismustbelove · 07/11/2020 12:44

We have a cupboard full of dvds. I quite resent the space they take up but DH is oddly attached to them. We haven’t had anything to play them on since the DVD player broke (and was never replaced) years ago. DH insists he can watch them on his laptop yet never does. Some of them are st least 15 years old and still have their cellophane wrapper on them.

I realised recently that relying on streaming is very dependent on current affairs. I have box sets of Faulty Towers and Father Ted that contain episodes that have since been permanently removed.

Dowser · 07/11/2020 12:49

Yes and still listen to them

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 07/11/2020 12:53

I hate clutter so love the fact movies and music can now be streamed and sent all the discs off to charity ages ago. Have a few cook books in the kitchen cupboards but we use kindles now so rarely buy books. Lots of charity shops won’t take them now so it feels like a waste after they have been read so prefer the environmental aspect of the kindle.

nitgel · 07/11/2020 12:55

Yes tons and still buy. I would hate to not have physical items. What if you lose the lot due to some technical issue !

grapewine · 07/11/2020 12:56

Still have dvds of shows and films not available on streaming. Not getting rid of them. But I no longer have cds.

Holothane · 07/11/2020 12:58

Yes I’ve got a multi region blu ray player and a retro 80s ghetto blaster, love them.

NiceGerbil · 07/11/2020 12:59

A handful of dvds yes. Watch one occasionally.

No CDs.

Do have vinyl and a record player though Grin

Chicchicchicchiclana · 07/11/2020 13:03

Yes, I play cds all the time. I like to listen to a whole album by one artist or a whole ballet or opera or whatever. I cba to make up play lists for myself on my phone.

ISwearISwear · 07/11/2020 13:03

I have all my DVDs and still occasionally watch them. We watch them through DS’s Xbox although I think we still have a DVD player in the living room (don’t use that room much).
I still have my CD’s but don’t use them anymore, I now listen to music via Deezer.

A question though and the reason I have kept my DVD’s:
Yes, we have Sky and use Netflix and Prime etc but what do you do if you want to watch a random film and it isn’t on any of those channels?

megletthesecond · 07/11/2020 13:04

Yes.
CD's for the car, it doesn't have Bluetooth.
A small box of classic DVD's for the kids at home. The smart tv isn't on that often as they just argue about watching crap on YouTube. DVD's cause fewer arguments.

NiceGerbil · 07/11/2020 13:09

'. I like to listen to a whole album by one artist'

It's such a shame this has been lost.

Musicians used to put s lot of thought into the album as a whole, um, story as it were.

On vinyl they took the two sides as two halves.

Eg Sargent pepper, magical mystery tour by Beatles. Blur were big on this as well. Just ones I think of, it was standard though. To get it to hang together as a whole thing.

I think we've lost a lot because of that tbh

Frenchfancy · 07/11/2020 13:14

I've taken to listening to cds while wfh. I use my phone to keep in contact with my colleagues so I get annoyed when the music is interrupted. And a CD reminds me to get up an move around every 45 mins.

Like others I use dvds as can't always find what I want on streaming - where do people stream from there than prime /Netflix? Also we are rural and Internet sometimes goes down, invariably on a Saturday night when we want to watch a film.

TheChosenTwo · 07/11/2020 13:18

No! Well actually dh is hoarding a box of cds in his workshop as i refused to waste space in the house for something pointless - we don’t have anything to play them on anymore and besides which they scratch like a bitch and render themselves unplayable if you’re careless with things like we are.
Digital music all the way for us in the house!! Haven’t owned a DVD player in years either and we passed all our dvds on years ago.

HeronLanyon · 07/11/2020 13:19

I just threw and recycled a box of blank rewritable dvds from my early 90s DVD player/recorder. Kept keeping them for no good reason at all !
Also some floppy discs found lurking during a sort out.
I thank you !

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/11/2020 13:19

Several large folders of DVDs. Realised recently DVD player is on its last legs, and worried about replacing it.

Not everything is on Netflix. Most of our collection isn't.
