I’m lost - when do we find out who is president?

Whenismumhome · 06/11/2020 22:46

Is there no official date/time for when the results are officially released and the next US president is announced? I know it’s looking like it’ll be Joe Biden, but when will there be an official announcement to say who it actually is?

When the votes are counted 🤷🏻‍♀️

QuinoaWest · 06/11/2020 22:53

When Hell freezes over, and we're invited to the skating party.

DisgruntledPelican · 06/11/2020 22:57

Have you not been following the news at all? They’re still counting the votes. We won’t know until they’re all counted, and even then there will be legal challenges aplenty.

Whenismumhome · 06/11/2020 23:03

I do know that they’re still counting the votes. It’s just i thought there would have been some kind of deadline and a scheduled announcement

OP posts:
grassisjeweled · 06/11/2020 23:05

Tonight apparently

Ginnymweasley · 06/11/2020 23:06

Before january I imagine.... but who knows with all the law suits etc.

bellagogosdead · 06/11/2020 23:06

I thought it was the 10th December...

PenguinIce · 06/11/2020 23:06

I don’t understand how 90% of states managed to announce results within 12 hours whereas the rest need 3 plus days! They say the issue is postal votes but surely every state was the same!

Mylittlesandwich · 06/11/2020 23:08

In some states republican senators required that no votes were counted at all until voting closed. That means they couldn't start until Tuesday. This election has the highest turn out in 120 years so it's taking a while.

SheepandCow · 06/11/2020 23:09

Do you get paid to be a vote counter or is it volunteers?

It must get so boring after several days!

Whenismumhome · 06/11/2020 23:10

I thought they would have had computers doing the counting

OP posts:
PatriciaHolm · 06/11/2020 23:11

@PenguinIce unfortunately not - in some states (for example Florida), they start counting postal votes before the election, which essentially gives them a head start. However, other states (such as Pennsylvania) aren't allowed to do that. Also some states will accept ballots received up to 3 days after the election as long as they are postmarked no later than Election Day (I think PA is one those too; Trump is trying to stop them counting these).

Whenismumhome · 06/11/2020 23:12

Trump is a dickhead. I don’t know much about Biden but Trump is just awful

OP posts:
CallmeFP · 06/11/2020 23:14

Even though the official votes will take time to concretely announce, the AP (Associated Press) will call the winner of each state when enough votes are counted to be ‘called’.

EarringsandLipstick · 06/11/2020 23:16

😂 OP - it's like you're stating some unheard of piece of information!

And don't know much about Biden? How come?

grapewine · 06/11/2020 23:16

I think they have to declare a winner by 15 December - barring any court cases ...

Derelictwreck · 06/11/2020 23:17

@Whenismumhome

But that would be terrible. People's votes wouldn't be counted if election officials were slow? Imagine the claims of interference eg democrat counters in republicans states counting nice and slow
Whatsnewpussyhat · 06/11/2020 23:22

Whoever wins, an old, pervy misogynist will be POTUS.

MoonJelly · 06/11/2020 23:27

Apparently they have to check voter and witness signatures and addresses on postal votes. Some states do that ahead of the count, but some of the states with Republicans in charge wouldn't allow it.

What's been frustrating me is that they've been saying all day that there were 2% of votes still to count in Pennsylvania. Surely they've counted enough of the votes today to tip that over into 1%?

JovialNickname · 06/11/2020 23:27

It's because it is such a close call OP - the results really are neck and neck. With Trump threatening legal action on top, states are waiting til they're 100% sure before announcing. Plus, due to Covid, many people have voted by post and these are being counted AFTER the votes made in person which is taking a long time too. (Postal votes tend to favour Biden which is why Trump is trying to get these shut down)

PP are right that it's going to be a long time before every vote is counted and a final, absolute, statistical result is known. But it is possible to know who has won before all votes have been counted, due to the way the American electoral system works. It looks likely that Biden will win, as he only needs Pennsylvania to win the election and it looks like he's going to do that (not confirmed). At this point normally he would have been likely to call the election; i.e. to claim he's won given that it's looking that way. But with Trump being so volatile he cannot do that, he's playing by the strictest rules and waiting til he's definitely statistically won to declare victory.

HOWEVER not everyone is playing by the same rules. The speaker of the house of representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has already carried out a press conference naming Biden as president elect. US and UK media are now cautiously describing Biden as the new US president. The legal announcement will take weeks. The popular announcement is gradually happening now. Biden will announce when it's legally safe to do so, to protect the integrity of the American electoral system. And Trump will accept it never.

I liked Barack Obama as president. Anyone else?

Also, can a past president not run for presidency again at all?
