If someone asked you for "builders' tea", what would you make?

Colleague at work, when asked what they would like, asked for a cup of builders tea (no sugar). Several times. Each time I'd make it strong, then wonder why they went back to the kitchen and added more milk.
Eventually I asked them about it and they said they don't like it strong. When I queried this they said they ask for builders' tea in order to differentiate between regular tea and the decaf, redbush and other teas.
To me, builders' tea is strong tea. No?

Strong and possibly milky. Definitely not a synonym for 'just ordinary tea', colleague is in the wrong there.

Gingaaarghpussy · 06/11/2020 20:59

It'd be standard nato in my house, inherited from my raf dad. Strong tea, splosh of milk and 2 sugars.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 06/11/2020 21:00

Around here that would be a 'standard NATO'

same here!

Every builder I know takes at least 3 sugars, but they aren't fussy about how strong the tea is at all.

Strong tea for sure!

Hellothere19999 · 06/11/2020 21:01

Strong. Teabag in. Not much milk. If they are adding milk they are a fraud! My family are so strict with tea if you did it milky they would probs throw it at you. Hahahahah, we are northern with Irish heritage so 🤷🏻‍♀️

MitziK · 06/11/2020 21:01

A relatively decent brand of teabag - Yorkshire, Sainsbury's Red Label. Add boiling water.

Walk to the other side of kitchen and wave the milk bottle at it.

Add sugar if requested.

Builder's tea is strong.

ifiwasascent · 06/11/2020 21:03

If someone asked for builders tea I'd give them strong cup, with cows milk and 2 sugars

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 06/11/2020 21:03

Builders tea is very strong tea with a bit of milk & 1 sugar.
Many of my friends make cat piss tea (tea bag just paddles in the hot water before it's whipped out)
I like my tea bag brewing in my mug for at least 5mins.
Builders tea is almost a meal in itself, yum!

cardswapping · 06/11/2020 21:03

Assam (black) tea, left to brew dark (but not so long the water on top makes reflective marks).

Without milk it is not builders' tea for me though.

damnthatanxiety · 06/11/2020 21:04

To me Builder's tea just means ordinary tea, like PG Tips rather than Earl Grey.

ineedsun · 06/11/2020 21:04

Builders is just bog standard tea

Popcornismandatory · 06/11/2020 21:05

Strong tea in a big mug with 2 sougars - this is how my tradesman DH has his

Popcornismandatory · 06/11/2020 21:06

Sugars 😼

MrsSpringfield · 06/11/2020 21:11

Strong, with milk and at least 2 sugars

amusedbush · 06/11/2020 21:11

Yep, builders tea is strong with a splash of milk. You should be able to stand the spoon up in it.

As pp suggested, your colleague means breakfast tea!

EisQuiaPiusEs · 06/11/2020 21:11

I take "builders' tea" to mean bog-standard Tetley/P G Tips/Whatever Brand tea-bags. I always have leaf tea, which the builders find very odd.

lynsey91 · 06/11/2020 21:11

It should be very strong. If someone I don't know makes me a cup of tea I ask for builders tea with no sugar.

I drink my tea really dark with a tiny splash of milk (I hate milk)

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 06/11/2020 21:12

Tea thats so strong you can "stand the spoon in it". Served scalding hot and as full to the brim as possible without spilling it. Usually, but not always, served with lots of sugar. In a proper mug (not bone china). Bonus points if the mug is tea stained.

namechangenumber204 · 06/11/2020 21:15

Glad I have read this - because Snag tights do ''builders tea' coloured tights. I thought they would be quite dark but they aren't they are a really pale cream - very unflattering for big legs Sad. Thought I had it wrong!

ScrambledSmegs · 06/11/2020 21:15

Strong tea with a splash of milk. A nice deep colour It used to mean with 2 sugars according to my DM but that seems to have fallen out of favour.

CathyorClaire · 06/11/2020 21:19

Stewed to fuckery, waft of the milk bottle served in a large mug with an enormous sugar packet left within reach.

I'm a big fan of builders tea with no sugar. Can't abide gnat piss.

SpeedofaSloth · 06/11/2020 21:22

Strong tea with quite a bit of milk.

NATO Standard is milk and two sugars.

Unescorted · 06/11/2020 21:22

Stand the spoon up so the tannic acid comes through (so it is drinking temperature) after that it variable milk and sugar.

My tea is - "builders", acquaintance of milk, no sugar. Or when I am on site "as it comes"
