If someone asked you for "builders' tea", what would you make?

Colleague at work, when asked what they would like, asked for a cup of builders tea (no sugar). Several times. Each time I'd make it strong, then wonder why they went back to the kitchen and added more milk.
Eventually I asked them about it and they said they don't like it strong. When I queried this they said they ask for builders' tea in order to differentiate between regular tea and the decaf, redbush and other teas.
To me, builders' tea is strong tea. No?

A strong mug of well brewed tea. Nothing but plain black tea with milk. A dark golden hue.

DartmoorDoughnut · 06/11/2020 19:48

Very strong tea with two sugars based on what our builders drank!

Littlebelina · 06/11/2020 19:50

Cuppa you can stand a spoon in, just enough milk to take edge off. A proper cup of tea

Same as everyone else.

Why would you give someone redbush tea if they asked for tea?!

Moltenpink · 06/11/2020 19:52

Brewed longer with just a splash of milk. Your colleague is strange Smile

Natsel84 · 06/11/2020 19:52

Strong strong tea , tea bag kept in for way to long , glug of milk

Zzz1234 · 06/11/2020 19:53

Strong, not much milk, and a pack of biscuits (each)

Fancycrackers · 06/11/2020 19:53

Builders tea is very strong and very milky. Opaque and a lovely brown. Aaahh! Grin

NancysDream · 06/11/2020 19:54

Normal tea, not herbal or green or earl grey or whatever, quite strong, but milky too.

ShowingOut · 06/11/2020 19:54

Builders tea, for me, is something like Typhoo.

ShowingOut · 06/11/2020 19:55

ie, not Earl Grey, not Lapsang, not Green tea, etc.

wirldsgonemad · 06/11/2020 19:56

Yes strong tea, not much milk, 'mucky brown' colour.

Breathmiller · 06/11/2020 19:57

We use builders tea to mean tetley (other builder teas are available) instead of my kind of tea - herbal or jasmine green.
I would still ask of they wanted it strong and with milk or sugar

RishiMcRichface · 06/11/2020 19:57

What's the world coming to when you have to have a special name for regular tea. I blame the hipsters.

Duckwit · 06/11/2020 19:57

What kind of wanker asks for 'builders tea' every time?

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 06/11/2020 19:58

Strong but very milky?

KellyWithABigBelly · 06/11/2020 19:59

In offices I’ve worked in, builders tea has always meant ‘normal’ tea (PG Tips etc) rather than peppermint/fruit/Earl gray etc. If someone wants normal tea on the tea round, they jokingly say builders tea.

RevolutionRadio · 06/11/2020 20:00

I'd ask what that meant, I don't drink tea so don't really make it.

If I had to make it without more info I'd give them: normal tea with a bit of milk and 2 sugars.

GirlCalledJames · 06/11/2020 20:01

You’re right, colleague is wrong. Asking for a ‘normal tea’ would get them closer to what they want

EugenesAxe · 06/11/2020 20:01

They are being unreasonable. Builder's tea definitely means 'strong'. I might put in a decent slug of milk but it would still be a middling tan colour rather than pale.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 06/11/2020 20:01

Your colleague clearly doesn't understand what builders tea is. Builders tea just means strong tea.

AhoyMeFarties · 06/11/2020 20:02

Strong tea, a splash of milk, sugar optional
Delicious

BreatheAndFocus · 06/11/2020 20:03

Builders tea is strong tea. Dark brown.

Fastforwardtospring · 06/11/2020 20:03

Builders tea is normal tea, PG Tips, Yorkshire tea and the like so I believe, then you have your Green tea, Earl grey etc.

Fastforwardtospring · 06/11/2020 20:04

Builders tea is my favourite 😂
