How did you make childs birthday in lockdown special?

I’m sure plenty of us and our kids have had lockdown birthdays.
What did you do or was there anything your child particularly enjoyed from your efforts?
My DD is turning 7 next week so want to make it a bit special as she won’t be having any friends round or family

Mine is 7 next week too and not only are we in lockdown but she’s also self isolating due to a Covid class in her class 😭.
We’re going to have whatever she wants to eat, then a family ‘disco’ (I have a disco light) with some party games. Then I’ve told her that when her younger brother and sister are in bed she can sneak into my room with me and we’ll watch a film and eat popcorn in my bed together Grin.
I’m also going to get the Christmas fairy lights out to decorate the house.

*covid case in her class

I got a proper cake maker to make my daughters cake in lockdown- very little but perfect! I would normally bodge something. We did a birthday treasure hunt to find the presents. Some local friends did doorstep deliveries.

My son had his 9th birthday in the first week of the first lockdown. Cancelled birthday party!
We made a homemade cake, balloons party food and played new board games all evening. He loved it. Birthdays are special as a kid - you don't need too much really.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 06/11/2020 19:34

We did an outside cinema thing - hot choc, fire pit, managed to borrow a projector - loads of fairy lights and it was great !!!

LER83 · 06/11/2020 19:39

For her 8th birthday my dd and her brother slept in the living room on an airbed and watched a film/had snacks etc. They had never slept in the living room before and they both thought it was the best thing ever 😂

Simplyunacceptable · 06/11/2020 19:52

My DD turned 9 in early June. It was thankfully a beautiful hot day so we went for a walk at a local nature reserve and had a picnic. When we got home we got the paddling pool out as well. Watched a film of her choice in the evening and had take out pizza followed by birthday cake. She had a great day.

MoiraRoseVibes · 06/11/2020 20:36

My DD turns seven this month too. I might make a treasure hunt with clues hidden all around the house and garden, and the treasure will be her pressies.
I like the idea of staying up late to watch a film once her younger sister is asleep.

Notlostjustexploring · 06/11/2020 20:41

We got a cake made by an excellent baker/cake decorator of his current favourite characters, that went down a treat!!

Nursery also put on a little mini party for him, which he was utterly thrilled with (he's 4).

And promise yourself it'll be better next year!!

nancybotwinbloom · 06/11/2020 20:47

Can you hire a bouncy castle? Not sure if they are allowed but I'm sure you'd all have fun if you can?

Maybe a little autum Bbq and hot chocolate

HeyMicky · 06/11/2020 20:51

We had a special breakfast; a present hunt around the house and garden; a zoom call morning tea/supper with Australian grandmother when we ate the same things; a drive-by by the other GPs; zoom calls with friends and extended family; a movie afternoon with popcorn, tickets etc; a bath with glow sticks and bath bombs; a playroom disco; her choice of meals all day; and a "sleepover" with her sister.

Bbub · 06/11/2020 21:12

This is a great thread, I'm planning a bday soon as well. My only idea so far was a treasure hunt so I'm definitely punching some of these!

badlydrawnbear · 06/11/2020 21:13

DC1 was 9 in April. It was unseasonably hot so we got a paddling pool out, watched Matilda the musical on Youtube and pretended we were at the theatre including an interval with ice cream, a camp fire in the evening with toasted marshmallows. She chose the food for all meals (pancakes with cream and fruit for breakfast, 'party tea' food like crisps and sausage rolls and cakes at lunch time, take-away pizza at tea time. We zoom called family and a couple of her friends for a chat and they sung happy birthday and we had cake (my extended family had a few lockdown birthdays where we sung happy birthday on zoom and everyone got themselves a small cake to 'share' cake with the birthday person). She recently told me that her birthday was the only thing coronavirus hadn't ruined and it had been the best birthday ever!!

Emeeno1 · 06/11/2020 21:19

Just had an 18th birthday here, As above, fire pit, fairy lights, marshmallows and some sparklers (and a bit of fizz for the new adult).

Enjoyed by small ones and big ones alike.

Greyingmumto3 · 06/11/2020 21:34

We’ve had two birthdays in lockdown . Cake, takeaway and choice of film for 11 year old . We were going to put tents up in the garden but the weather was rubbish so we dragged the mattresses down into the front room and had a sleepover which our daughter loved .
Also had our 18 year olds birthday so we decorated the house and takeaway .
They both had video calls and doorstep visits .

tempnamechange98765 · 06/11/2020 21:34

Ooh following. DC turns 5 on Boxing Day - a day when not much can be done to celebrate anyway!

prettygreenteacup · 06/11/2020 21:37

My DD turned 5 in April so peak of lockdown number 1!
We did zoom calls with her friends and family. Birthday cake and party food for the four of us. A disco in the living room with her little sister - we have a disco light! And then she got to stay up late and watch a film with popcorn when her sister went to bed.

She had been so excited at the thought of a party. Going to bed that night she said she'd had the best day ever and we only went as far as our garden :)

Greyingmumto3 · 06/11/2020 21:47

I forgot McDonald’s was shut as well so we made our own breakfast wraps . Home designed wrappers and my daughter made everyone’s receipts too 😀

AlwaysLatte · 06/11/2020 21:49

We gave our 10 year old breakfast in bed (his favourite waffles and maple syrup) then a walk to the river and swim/picnic. Home for a game with his brother (I put 100 balloons on the trampoline to pop with their bums!) Later fried chicken treat and chocolate cake. They've always had big parties so we've yet to do anything about that - big sleepover planned for when things are better!

NemoRocksMyWorld · 06/11/2020 21:58

I had ds turn 6 in April, dd turn 9 in May and littlest ds is due to turn 4 at the end of November.

They always have pancakes for breakfast, and love having the first pancake. Then we have a 'party' with all their favourite foods. They loved giving me a shopping list with all the snacks they wanted. They had a pinata and party games and party bags.

Then they had a movie night in the evening.

It was actually very lovely and nice to have something a bit more low key than usual!

Howmanysleepsnow · 07/11/2020 08:25

Fire pit with marshmallows, and later neon flames (colour changing sachets in the fire pit), special dinner, sparklers, fairy lights

Pinkfluffyunicornsdancing · 07/11/2020 08:39

We did a video call with DDs grandparents playing the music so we could all play pass the parcel. Treasure hunt for presents. Every birthday since then each family household has bought their own birthday cake and candles for a video call and we've all sang the birthday song, had cake and a catch up.

Mumofboys1 · 07/11/2020 08:51

My eldest turned 6 in last lockdown. We did special breakfast, then we had family go past the end of the drive way, and his best friend did too all on their daily exercise. We also make had batman and a t-Rex go past on their daily exercise. Spider-Man did a video call, and we got a roast dinner delivered. All in, he loved it and I was so relieved given he was due to have a big class party which had been cancelled.

Pogmella · 07/11/2020 09:01

We had a 6th birthday here over the summer. We did a treasure hunt/insect quiz all over the house, party food, cake, musical statues and then a movie. In the evening the two kids had a jungle explorers’ sleepover (put a green light in the room and played jungle sound in- oh and they had an explorer’s lunch pack each). DD’s 5th is coming up and she wants the same again!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/11/2020 09:06

9yo birthday.... We had a day at Hogwarts. We made slime in potions. Went searching for Berries in Care of Magical creatures. Learnt to write with quillls. Made broomsticks and played Quidditch.
