Colourblind glasses - any experience?

IamAporcupine · 05/11/2020 11:29

It's my DH's 50 birthday soon and I thought I could get him one of those glasses as a present.
At first I thought it was a great idea, to be able to finally see colours, but now I am wondering if it might have the opposite effect, ie make him realised how much he missed?!

Does any one have any experience?
(I am aware there will not be many, if any, colourblind women in the forum, but still...)

I didn't even know these existed! How fascinating.

Sorry, not much help I know!

I'm a colour blind woman and am absolute fascinated by these. I would love to receive some! Though I don't see in black and white which is generally a big misconception, I am aware I don't see things the same way as others and would be intrigued.

I thought colour blindness was an issue of distinguishing green/ red in particular and pastel colours looking rather grey? I've never heard anyone describe it as seeing in black and white!?

Thanks porcupine, this is fascinating! Smile

That’s exactly how my husband describes it. Says it’s like watching a black and white tv. Far less common than not being able to distinguish between two colours.

I’d like to know more about these glasses. Do you have a link please OP?

sorryforswearing · 07/11/2020 01:20

Sorry. Just seen the link.

Oh wow, a colorblind woman - that's prety rare!

So what would you say?
Would you like to have these glasses or it would make you feel bad?

@IamAporcupine
Yup incredibly rare and I drew that lucky draw haha!

I personally would love it. It would be like seeing an entirely new world. I understand what you mean about realising what you've been missing but honestly I think most people would just be excited to finally experience it.

RiojaWeatherIsHere · 07/11/2020 06:00

There are lots of videos of people receiving these glasses as a gift & they make me cry every single time.
They are so moved & grateful.
Buy them for your husband

Happylittlethoughts · 07/11/2020 07:34

I have no experience except seeing people experience these on short videos. They do ll become emotional (maybe the unemotional don't make the most popular videos) It looks to a positive emotion, seeing the world in colour. I think I'd buy them, I don't think overwhelming bitterness would be a usual reaction 🤔

IamAporcupine · 08/11/2020 23:04

Yes I saw the videos too.
I think I'll buy them

I’m not sure that they actually give full colour vision, because colour blindness is caused by missing cone cells in the eye. It’s possible that they just enhance the colours so that it’s easier to tell the difference. Colour vision is really subjective though and we don’t really have any way of knowing what the world looks like to someone else

This is such an interesting philosophical point. It's fascinating. There is no way to compare except through common reference words and we have no way to know how others are experiencing something which they agree is "blue". It's like asking someone with tetrachromacy to describe it to you: you be no wiser than you would if someone tried to explain what it's like to see in 4 dimensions.

But I digress. OP, definitely buy the glasses! Such a thoughtful and wonderful gift. Smile

DaisyDreaming · 09/11/2020 02:31

I’ve watched the videos and found them moving but read the glasses aren’t as effective as often made out.

DaisyDreaming · 09/11/2020 02:35

@JinpingShuffle when I read your post I instantly thought of the lyrics from Matilda
‘ Have you ever wondered, well I have,
About how when I say, say, red, for example,
There's no way of knowing if red
Means the same thing in your head
As red means in my head
When someone says red?’

Flamingolingo · 09/11/2020 08:03

@JinpingShuffle - indeed. It’s also how it’s possible for people to get to adulthood without realising that they are colour deficient. We know my DS but that’s only because my dad is so it was sort of expected. And with tetrachromacy - well, do tetrachromats know? I don’t think it’s as mainstream as colour deficiency.

Flamingolingo · 09/11/2020 08:09

I mean - I could very easily be a tetrachromat as I fit the profile (defective X chromosome from DF). But I have no real way of knowing for sure. I know that choosing paint colours is a bloody nightmare because beige or grey don’t really exist to me - the root always comes through. But maybe that’s the same for everyone. Who knows!?

That was exactly what I was wondering, whether it was mainly publicity. I think I'll probably still get them

Absolutely!
but this could be applied to everyone, colourblind or not

Have another question!

Would you go for a proper frame or a pair of clip-ons?!

I prefer the frames as a present, but the clip-ons can be used more!

hi everyone, @JinpingShuffle, @RiojaWeatherIsHere , @DaisyDreaming, @sorryforswearing, @Parmavioletmum, @Flamingolingo, @Happylittlethoughts

I thought I'd report back! Smile

Well, bought two types of lenses (as per their recommendation) and none worked - like....nothing! I was all ready to film the moment he would try them on and see the world, but it was totally unneventful Sad

We do not know why. Might try a different brand.
He was touched by the thought, but the glasses were crap!

OP posts:
FadedRed · 28/01/2021 12:54

How disappointing for you both. Still it was a lovely thought.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 28/01/2021 12:59

That's a shame. Sad

Perhaps get him to try enchroma.co.uk/pages/colour-blind-test the test on there and see if suggest the same lenses you bought?

IamAporcupine · 29/01/2021 00:21

@FadedRed - it was very dissapointing, yes.

He put them on, had a look around, took them off, then put them back on again. He kept doing that again and again to see if there was any difference.
I thought, well, this is not like those moving videos! Hmm
