Help me! My Frying is stuck on the window ledge

Okay this isn’t a wind up.

Have name changed for this, penis beaker, Mexican house thief etc etc.

My DH put my favourite cast iron pan on the ledge outside our flat window as it was smoking, and he didn’t want to set of the fire alarm.

Well it was so hot it fused it’s self to the window ledge. We had a friend over at the time who it quite possibly the most musular man I know, and even he couldn’t get it off.

We rent so the last thing I want to do is tear it off along with the covering of the building.

We have one idea so far which is to use the cream brûlée torch to heat up the pan again. Would this work??

The next idea is to keep it there forever and turn it into a bird bath, but this risks the wrath of our landlord when we eventually move out.

I’m really upset as it cost ££££. Please wise MN, tell me what to do!

I have enclosed a photo hopefully showing the material on the building ledge it’s attached it’s self to.

Blush

Yes! Add more pans and make it a new “bansky” feature Grin

BMW6 · 04/11/2020 16:24

Oh dear. If you do manage to get it off the roof will need to be repaired surely?

TenShortStories · 04/11/2020 16:25

What's under that roof? I wouldn't be making any effort to remove the pan without being ready to mend the hole you'll make underneath!

Sparklfairy · 04/11/2020 16:28

@Iwantacookie

It's there for good. Add some saucepans and make it into a "feature"
You could start a new trend, like every single Ground Force episode had a water feature and decking...

The roof felt is most likely damaged and will need repair. I'd try PPs suggestion of boiling water and blow torch to keep it hot, then try and prise it off so you can assess how bad it is.

Was it really worth a few seconds of smoke alarm noise? Grin

purrswhileheeats · 04/11/2020 16:28

Windex? 🤭

Dogneedsbrushing · 04/11/2020 16:30

I have a similar frying pan. One dose of boiling water will have no effect. I think you might have to leave it there until the whole of the felt roofing can be repaired.

Staffy1 · 04/11/2020 16:30

I think the pan is a gonner. It's not likely to come off without some of the window sill attached to it.

Clariana · 04/11/2020 16:31

My husband is a roofer, he says either the creme brûlée's torch to heat it up or boiling water, then it will come off, and he says don't work about the felt, it will be fine afterwards!

Clariana · 04/11/2020 16:32

worry, not work!

somelemons · 04/11/2020 16:39

OMG don't use a blow torch, whatever you do.

I've seen what a blow torch can do to roofing felt.

Helpmylecreuset · 04/11/2020 16:40

I’m thinking the water feature it the best option so far!

Yes DH feels really really stupid. He wanted to climb out there with a tool and pry it off. But I told him no.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 04/11/2020 16:45

somelemons if it was used on the pan and not the felt surely it wouldn't be any different to when it first got stuck though?

But a fire extinguisher might be good to have at hand all the same...

AdaColeman · 04/11/2020 16:48

Don't use a blow torch on it!

The base of the pan will be beyond restoring now. The best use for it is as stand for a bushy plant.

spiderlight · 04/11/2020 16:56

Bobble plate!!

Nothing constructive to add, sorry.

Helpmylecreuset · 04/11/2020 16:58

Last time he tried some DIY he unplugged the washing machine and flooded the shop below. Luckily I have a friend who’s a plaster. Please see exhibit B of his last attempt at handy work.

Dear god he’s a hazard!

Helpmylecreuset · 04/11/2020 17:05

Yes! The lady that owns the shop downstairs (below our kitchen) pushed a note through the door, and you should have seen the look on my face when I saw her ceiling. Thank goodness I have a mate that’s a plasterer who fixed it for cost so it did cost hundreds! Now I wish I had a mate that was a roofer.

Helpmylecreuset · 04/11/2020 17:06

I mean only cost hundreds not thousands

fabulousathome · 04/11/2020 17:08

How about a hairdryer on extra hot at the place where the pan meets the roof?

Helpmylecreuset · 04/11/2020 17:15

I suppose the only thing that’s good, is that the washing machine fiasco was above the beauty salon, where as this time it’s above the fishmonger. So we won’t look like utter utter dicks.

MrCarpet used to be a roofer (now retired) and is chuckling to himself. He was very grumpy earlier, so thanks for lifting the mood in the Carpet household! As soon as I said someone had put a hot pan on a felt roof he started laughing and he knew exactly what would have happened.

He says you need two things; first to heat the inside of the pan with the blow torch, being very careful not to go too near the edge of the pan or you will set fire to the tar on the roofing felt. Then he reckons you need a patch to repair the inevitable hole in the felt. He said that as if everyone would know how to patch roofing felt! I'm sure there is a video somewhere to show you (I learnt the hard way never to ask detailed building questions!).

BertieBotts · 04/11/2020 17:18

Leave it there and deny all knowledge!

waltzingparrot · 04/11/2020 17:19

A green roof is quite the thing these days!

Thank you that made me smile! Oh of course I know how to patch roofing felt! Doesn’t everyone! 😂😂😂
