Cracked windscreen... how much to replace?

TheBugHouse · 04/11/2020 07:53

It’s for a young driver who already has astronomical insurance from a previous claim so I don’t want to claim for the wind screen. I know it makes a difference to renewal premiums even though it would just be windscreen. Does anyone know roughly what the prices are as I can’t find anything online! Thanks

My policy includes ‘no excess’ for windscreens, and my premium had never gone up following a claim, even for a write off that was my fault. Aviva.

ExclamationPerfume · 04/11/2020 07:56

£200-£400 according to Google. They must still notify their insurance though.

TheBugHouse · 04/11/2020 07:58

Exclamation... why is that please?

It is usually in the terms and conditions. Insurance is all about risk. The more claims that you have be it fault or non fault increases your risk to them.

The bill from the garage for ours was a thousand Euros. Luckily the insurance paid no problems (nor did if effect premiums)

Cracked windscreen shouldn't make a difference to insurance it's wear and tear not damage that's your fault . Its separate from a claim , It's usually £100 excess for windscreen repair check your insurance not mumsnet .

vanillandhoney · 04/11/2020 08:07

Yes, you'll need to notify insurance regardless.

user1471505356 · 04/11/2020 08:24

You might be able to just get a repair.

noideaatallreally · 04/11/2020 08:27

Usually does not impact on your insurance premium - ass pp said - check the policy. Last time I had mine done via insurance I had to pay the £60 excess on it. Are you sure you can;t get it repaired or is it beyond that?

TheBugHouse · 04/11/2020 08:27

I would just rather pay for it rather than it being listed as a claim. It’s not about the money particularly it’s about keeping premiums down. He got hit at a junction when Newly qualified and the car was a write off. It didn’t go against him but it’s most definitely affected his premium as much higher than his friends premiums. He has one year no claim now and I know the windscreen won’t remove that bonus but it will still be a claim snd will impact premiums.

He knocked it loading something into it so it’s like a big spider . I’m sure needs replacing

I had one changed last year becayse of a big crack and it cost £180 fitted

Svelteinmydreams · 04/11/2020 08:32

They won’t ask how it happened. I had a new windscreen earlier this year - £800, of which I paid £75. Read the policy, it won’t affect Ncd, unless or until he makes a habit of it.

DreadingSeason2020sFinale · 04/11/2020 08:33

Prices vary between makes and models.

Go online and do a quote on any windscreen repairers website. National windscreens did mine just a couple of weeks ago.

Cracked windscreen... how much to replace?
Pashazade · 04/11/2020 08:34

I seem to recall if it's smaller than a £2 coin you're ok, because it's an on-site repair and doesn't require replacing the windscreen. It just gets covered and doesn't count as a claim per se, although it all went through the insurance and they pay auto glass direct. Because it's wear and tear. At least that's what happened for mine.

whatsbinhappnin · 04/11/2020 08:36

Autoglass repair, autoglass replace

MatildaonaWaltzer · 04/11/2020 08:38

@whatsbinhappnin you sick individual, I now have that tune lodged in my head :(((

TheBugHouse · 04/11/2020 08:39

Allthedoggo did you notify insurers?

For some cars (our Grand Picasso C4, for example) it's quite a procedure. The car had to be taken to a specialist to have the sensors that live behind the windscreen and monitor speed, vehicle distance and lane position all need recalibrating when the screen is changed. Which can bump the price considerably (dealer job).

DreadingSeason2020sFinale · 04/11/2020 12:26

@DGRossetti ouch I can imagine that was eye wateringly pricy.

I had my old Landrover screen completely replaced (over 23 years old anyway so as pitted as an orange peel) and it was £85 on the insurance. The fella told me that despite it being old, easily found and no heated windscreen or automatic wiper sensors, the rubber trim alone that they put on around it would be far more than the £85 fee.

MadeForThis · 04/11/2020 12:50

For most insurers a window screen replacement is a repair not a claim. It won't effect the premium cost next year.

tommika · 04/11/2020 12:56

You can get a price guide here:

ukcarglass.co.uk/blog/windscreen-replacement-cost/

Personally I would opt for going through the insurance for a windscreen rather than pay up front.
For my car it’s about £300 - £500 for a windscreen depending on whether it is a heated windscreen or has sensors for auto wipers.
Unless it’s a more basic car windscreens are expensive, and it’s an item that doesn’t tend to go against the driver

islockdownoveryet · 04/11/2020 13:21

It shouldn't effect your Ncd though , have you checked your insurance?

whoareyouIwonder · 04/11/2020 13:21

It's not a claim

It won't affect premiums

I claimed 3 times in one year once! £50 a go

User0ne · 04/11/2020 13:22

It depends on the car. If it's new with sensors etc in the screen it'll be expensive. If it's older (7yrs+ ish) you could probably buy one from a scrapyard and get a local garage to fit it. It's a lot more work to organise but it's a damn sight cheaper
