Jelly Tots - also ruined

SlightlyJaded · 03/11/2020 16:04

First pack in about thirty years. The disappointment was crushing. The dome is too high and the jelly too hard.

I've only just come to terms with the fact that Cadbury's is off the table, and now this. I LOVED Jelly Tots and now they are nothing more than the droppings of a large Fruit Pastil. Gutted.

@Rockbird

I happened upon an Australian bar of Cadbury's in B&M this week and it's amazing. So creamy and beautiful. I hadn't realised just how much it had turned to shite here. I'm rationing it and going back for more ASAP. Cost a bloody fortune though!
???! Please explain!
Rockbird · 04/11/2020 07:12

It was a bar of Top Deck. Thought it was Irish at first because I remembered it from my long gone youth but it came from Tasmania apparently. But oh my god, it's the best thing I've tasted in years and I'm not especially a chocolate fan, I prefer crisps! Get thee to a B&M ASAP!

Deathraystare · 04/11/2020 07:12

I bought my Dad a bar of Old Jamaica as he used to love it in the 80s and I happened to see it. He said there were more raisins than chocolate and no rum taste.

I haven't seen it for yonks!

FFS first Trump and now this. I'm going back to bed.

@LordLancington

I think a Turkish ear light is actually a thing, as they singed my ear hairs when I went to a Turkish barber. 😂

Does anybody remember when Aldi was selling Disco Biscuits? They've changed the name to something else now - Groovy Biscuits or something similar.

Disco biscuits were a staple item in our stockings at Christmas for many years (even as adults). Even through the biscuit is the same and just renamed Groovy, it's not the same!
haba · 04/11/2020 10:39

@Sparklingbrook they have them in Sainsbury's if that helps!

Feminist10101 · 04/11/2020 10:42

I’d rather eat shit than anything made by Nestle.

SlightlyJaded · 04/11/2020 13:16

Yes, to the poster who pointed out that you can no longer squish the 'tots' into a Tot Tower Sandwich which was literally amazing.

Jelly Babies are also now, completely shit.

Jellygate looks to be going the way of chocolategate.

I don't know where it will all end but they better leave the Tunnocks Tea Cakes alone.

Remember back in the day eating a curly wurly. It was all soft and chewy and when you took a bite and pulled it with your teeth, it was like Stretch Armstrong. They're all brittle and hard now FFS. 🙄

And they used to be about twenty-six feet long. They're piddly things now.

@Gatekeeper YES! Little tiny allsorts. And the dolly mix ones too. They were SO good as a kid. Also 1980s cola bottles that were bigger and flatter. Sigh...

BunTooti · 04/11/2020 17:47

Earlier today I bought my kids a tube of Jelly Tots each for their stockings, I was full of happiness and childhood nostalgia. Then I saw this thread Sad .
Everything is shit. Shit, I tell thee!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/11/2020 18:24

Curly-Wurlys are shardy now, instead of chewy. I used to like Cadbury's caramel but it's now palm oily chocolate with dribbly weird goo inside. Sad

Justmuddlingalong · 04/11/2020 19:03

Ruffle bars are still good. 😋There's hope everyone, but not much.

Lemonlady22 · 06/11/2020 12:02

Does anyone remember the square boxes of smarties, wine gums and fruit pastilles...I really loved them...bigger box all to my self instead of small tubes

They had those in Wilkos not long ago (the Smarties one). 😃
elQuintoConyo · 06/11/2020 17:27

I bought myself a tube of Jelly Tots last Christmas to go in my stocking, they were shockingly shit! Also mini Rolos for DH and Smarties for DS all foul, I was so upset, i'm abroad and can't get those sweets here, they just happened to be in Primark and i thought WOO HOO.

But it ended like BOO HOO.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/11/2020 17:33

@LordLancington

Still love me a Fried Turkish ear light
I’m glad you corrected your typo - fried Turkish ears doesn’t sound terribly nice! Grin

”I don't know where it will all end but they better leave the Tunnocks Tea Cakes alone.”

I’m sure Nicola Sturgeon would have something Very Stern to say if they tried to spoil the teacakes, @SlightlyJaded.

They can take our lives, but they’ll never take away our teacakes!!

isthismylifenow · 06/11/2020 17:42

I'm not in UK and we used to celebrate if we managed to get British chocolate here, things like Terry's Orange, Frys, Turkish delight etc. But bloody hell what happened because they are awful now. Thank goodness they haven't started messing with our chocolates yet and hope they don't ever. Just had a top deck the other day, they came in all fancy flavours too now. We still get proper jelly tots, but they brought out these awful sour ones as well and they are revolting. I like the chocolate coated ones the best, do you get those? My mum takes our jelly tots back to the UK when she comes to visit.

I found some called a double Decker which I think is a UK one.. Honestly you know it's bad if the DC didn't even eat them. It had to be the worst chocolate bar I've had.

LordLancington · 07/11/2020 03:42

I'm intrigued by chocolate jelly tots. However, I must take issue with your condemning of the glorious Double Decker. They have to be eaten correctly which involves eating the nougat layer first and then the base. But obviously not the whole nougat layer in one go, just sections at a time. And refrigerating them is a crime as the nougat turns into concrete.

drigon · 07/11/2020 04:19

Yes, Double Deckers are very nice and they seem heavier than other similar choc bars, so more for your money! Maybe wrong, though. I have a very hazy memory of them when they first came out- early 80s?- that they had raisins in the bottom layer originally. Maybe I'm imagining it though!

drigon · 07/11/2020 04:23

Oh yes, I was right (I should have checked this!), the original bar had raisins in the bottom layer until mid 80s, then they were discontinued.

isthismylifenow · 07/11/2020 05:13

Could I ask you to go find a double decker sometime in the near future and see if they still have that same deliciousness, as they just tasted of nothing. And left a layer of oil inside my mouth.

I have realised the difference in the jelly tot saga. Yours are made by Rowntree, but ours are made by Beacon. Whoever thought up the choc covered ones does need a medal though.

Was this not the Maverick bar?
