Crocheters/knitters; if you were shopping online, where would you order from?

I'm thinking ahead to Christmas; there aren't really many places locally to shop for wool apart from one shop I will visit (if it's open); so would like recommendations for somewhere to order my Christmas present from.

Any suggestions of accessories I might find handy would be welcome too - so far I only have a few crochet hooks & some jewellery pins I'm using as stitch markers.

Thank you!

I order from Lovecrafts, Wool Warehouse and Wool and Crafts. All very good.

Yddraigoldragon · 03/11/2020 11:36

Wool warehouse are amazing, also black sheep wools.

canigooutyet · 03/11/2020 11:40

I get my supplies from hobbycraft, ebay and amazon.

Accessory wise - a tape measure, scissors, needles and hooks are all you need.
Stitch markers you can also use bits of wool.

If you work with darker wools, I recommend the cheap light up crochet hook kits.

I usually buy from Wool Warehouse as I’ve always had excellent customer service from them.

Occasionally I order from KnitPicks as I love some of their yarns and can’t get them here.

I used to do occasional big orders from yarn.com in the US but now the exchange rate is so bad I expect it doesn’t work out as good value like it used to!

I use Drops yarns for most things now as they are almost all natural fibres at a very good price.

lucysmam · 03/11/2020 11:45

I learned the hard way about dark wool @canigooutyet! I'm currently, very slowly, working on the first of a pair of dark grey wristwarmers. Do you have a particular light up hook you'd recommend?

Another Wool Warehouse fan.

Ohalrightthen · 03/11/2020 11:46

I've been trying hard to support local yarn stores and small retailers rather than the big online companies, so I've been using Loop, and Vicki Brown Designs, which are who I'd usually shop with in "real life"

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/11/2020 11:47

Loop London, they have some wonderful tarts.

Year.

Wool Warehouse and Hobbii.

longtompot · 03/11/2020 11:48

Wool warehouse are excellent. Good pricing and generally fast delivery. A huge range too. Shame they don't have squishyvision 😉

SweetPetrichor · 03/11/2020 11:48

I order from wool warehouse.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/11/2020 11:48

Also Mrs Moon

CrochetBug · 03/11/2020 11:49

I nearly always use woolwarehouse.

Schjeeps colour crafter and Stylecraft are good quality yarns and not expensive (if that's a consideration)
Drops brand is also lovely, I use their cotton a lot.

Accessory wise, I only ever seem to need hook, scissors, stitch markers and a needle to sew in ends. Rarely use a tape measure.
I also use an app on my phone, I think it's called 'row counter' or similar. It links to Ravelry and is a good way to keep track of projects.

I bought this one a couple of months ago. Now the days are shorter glad I did. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07D5VQDGV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8

Wool warehouse here too! Also Black sheep wools, lovecrafts and Etsy. Etsy have some great sellers selling beginners kits and patterns.

lazylinguist · 03/11/2020 11:54

Wool Warehouse here too. Drops yarn is amazingly good value for big projects and really nice. I pretty much always use natural fibre yarn, but used some Scheepjes acrylic recently and it was very good. I buy more expensive yarn for smaller projects from independent spinners and dyers on Etsy.

theThreeofWeevils · 03/11/2020 11:55

I have had excellent service from
www.wee-county-yarns.co.uk
and
www.beadandwoolshop.co.uk
as well as Wool Warehouse

Zhx3 · 03/11/2020 11:56

Wool Warehouse and Black Sheep Wools. I order from LoveCrafts as well, but not sure whether they are an independent business? As registered in a business park in London I think.

I shop in person in Abakhan:www.abakhan.co.uk/stores/

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 03/11/2020 11:56

Wool Warehouse, Deramores, Black Sheep and Lovecrafts. I ordered from Deramores yesterday afternoon. It arrived this morning.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 03/11/2020 11:57

You can get free patterns on several of the websites too.

JeannieTheZebra · 03/11/2020 12:00

Like anything, it depends on how much you want to spend. There’s a whole world of independent hand dryers who produce the most beautiful yarn but it can be on the pricey side. If you want to have a look-even just for window shopping- I’d start with The Skein Queen or The Fibre Fox but there’s loads out there.

skippythebushkangarootoo · 03/11/2020 12:01

Another vote for Wool Warehouse and Deramores - but Aldi have some cheap and cheerful wool online now that I'm very tempted by! Smile

canigooutyet · 03/11/2020 12:01

@CrochetBug
Thanks for the app mention, never knew they existed.

Youtube is also great for little tips and tricks. Cannot recommend any in particular to subscribe to as I don't follow any of them.

WoooImAGhost · 03/11/2020 12:07

My local wool shop has created a website and posts orders since Covid to keep going so you could always check to see if yours are doing similar to stay in business.
