How do I stop dry lips?!

HforHavana · 03/11/2020 11:03

My lips are constantly dry. No matter what I use, after a few hours they are back dry and peeling again. Unless I am constantly applying lip balm they are dry. Iv tried all sorts of brands, but they always end up the same again.
I find it hard to wear lipgloss or lipstick as it just looks horrible. Help!!

Blistex intenive moisturiser. Anything else wax or petroeum jelly based just dries my lips out more. This is the only thing that works as it actually penetrates rather than sit on top of your lips.

I don't know if this is scientifically true or not but it worked for me many years ago. I read that if you constantly apply lip balm, your lips stop making their own moisture so you become dependent on it. If you go cold turkey on the lip balm, it's brutal for a bit but then your lips start producing their own moisture again and you're no longer dependent.

As I say, could be complete nonsense but it worked for me many years ago.

I found eucerin aquaphor the best when I was on medication that gave me very dry lips.

Blistex intensive moisturiser to restore moisture, with Vaseline on top to prevent further drying.
Used to suffer terribly until I learnt this combo :)

PriceEmUp · 03/11/2020 11:18

Drink plenty of water.

Use your toothbrush on your lips after you’ve brushes your teeth to exfoliate them, then apply a really good amount of Vaseline. Don’t use the tinted Vaseline just use the aloe Vera, or original one.
Try not to use the heat too much in the car.

Repeat, drink plenty of water through the day!

I thought sometimes dry lips was due to a vitamin B deficiency? How is your diet?

HforHavana · 03/11/2020 11:49

Thanks all! I will deffo pick up the blistex one and also drink more water!

Has anyone ever used lip oil? They're quite expensive and I'm always hesistant to buy one incase it ends up at the back of the drawer with the everything else

Vaseline is terrible for lips, I don’t know why it’s so popular. Carmex is my holy grail (the normal one not the cherry one which is like Vaseline)

I always thought they made it like that so you would keep buying it, but who knows. Clever tactic if so as it's clearly worked

Vagisil

LuckyAmy1986 · 03/11/2020 12:48

Same here @Dafspunk. I feel like the more you use the more you need it. I don’t have to use anything anymore

dontgobaconmyheart · 03/11/2020 12:50

I find my lips are like this mainly when I'm dehydrated.

I know everyone says vaseline isn't the way forward but I have used almost all of the above and the vaseline rosy lips is still my favourite for general use.

If I'm going outside I use the liz Earle lip balm as it's so thick it seems to be basically impenetrable. It's similar to Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream.

Otherwise the L'occitane shea butter one is nice and does a good job. Has a slightly weird vanilla taste though.

Carmex I like but am not a fan of the tingling and I don't find it lasts long .

Definitely exfoliate the lips (gently) with a lip scrub or just with a flannel or toothbrush, it does help.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 03/11/2020 12:51

Another vote for blistex intensive moisturiser.. it’s amazing. You won’t use anything else ever again.
The cherry one is nicer than the original flavour, but harder to find.

noseresearch · 03/11/2020 12:51

Scientifically speaking Vaseline is much better than Carmex, petroleum jelly is one of the best ingredients for reducing trans epidermal water loss. Whereas carmex contains menthol and camphor which for some individuals with sensitive or eczema prone skin - these ingredients have been proven to be irritants

However petroleum jelly works best when applied to damp skin (e.g after washing / bathing) to seal in the moisture

heartshapedfaces · 03/11/2020 12:51

yes to exfoliating with a flannel after you’ve put whatever your choice of balm is, makes such a difference

LoseLooseLucy · 03/11/2020 12:53

Bert’s Bees lip balm is the best I’ve used.

I’m glad to hear your lips are better but unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be evidence of repeated application of lip balms leading to dependence/ your body producing less moisture. However, there is evidence that some lip balms containing fragrance / irritants which over time worsen dryness.

noseresearch · 03/11/2020 13:04

Your mileage may vary, but I don’t think exfoliating is the best idea for very dry / sensitive lips. Picking dead skin off may increase inflammation

My best tips are to try to avoid dry environments (e.g. is your central heating on high? Flares my cheilitis and eczema like mad!), apply a fragrance free occlusive lip balm (Eucerin Aquaphor is my favourite) immediately after showering and reapply often whenever your lips feel dry again, hate to state the obvious but drink enough water if you’re dehydrated

I would avoid wearing lipstick / lipgloss temporarily too

If your still finding your symptoms continue, see gp/derm and they could give you a topical steroid

VickyBHF · 03/11/2020 13:06

Lanisloh (sp?) the nipple cream in a purple tube is the bomb

Ohthatsgreat · 03/11/2020 13:09

I second Lanolips products too. They have a specific lip treatment which is great

Maldivesdream · 03/11/2020 13:09

Carmex is great.

EggbertHeartsTina · 03/11/2020 13:15

OP you asked about lip oil. I’ve tried the Q+A liquorice lip oil as I have similar lips to you, and it doesn’t work for me at all.

I think I’m going to try the Blistex / Vaseline combo suggested by @cruellada

Iggly · 03/11/2020 13:16

Another one saying drink more!

MustardMitt · 03/11/2020 13:22

You can get cheap lip oils - I have one from Essence which was about £2 in Wilko.

I occasionally get really dry lips, I use the Blistex cream to heal them and am then diligent with a balm of some description. I like the Paw Paw ones (the tinted ones are nice, but the plain one you can use on cuticles too) for daytime and use my fancy Nuxe de Miel one at bedtime.

If they are itchy you might need an anti-fungal cream from the doctors.

Sheknowsaboutme · 03/11/2020 13:27

I use vaseline. Tried Carmex yrs ago and it stung.
