Long Hair (lighthearted)

blossomtree323 · 01/11/2020 19:50

Just wondered if this is a thing?

DM comments on my hair everytime I see her.
For most of my childhood I had short hair, probably cos it was hard to manage and was and is still very thick.

I think that a short inverted bob is my best look and I always revert back to it.

Everytime I've grown it longer, I get comments such as

"I think your hair looks better shorter"

I prefer it when it's its natural colour"

"It's not appropriate to have long hair at your age"

“Long hair doesn't look professional“. Err what?

I play bingo in my head to see how many of these she mentions in a visit Grin

When I last had it cut back to an inverted bob she said "Aah that's so much better" ConfusedGrin

Anyone else encountered such an aversion to long hair?

Anyone else encountered such an aversion to long hair?

All the time right here on MN. “I hate to see long hair on little girls” “long hair doesn’t look good on any woman over 40” “only women with short hair can look stunning” “long hair rarely looks good on anyone”

Apart from that it was only the very strict, joyless mothers at school that I ever recall saying this sort of thing. The sort where absolutely everything had to be practical and sensible and who couldn’t let go.

I think people should just have whatever hair they want and either long or short can look good or bad on anyone. I find it especially weird when women make such comments as you’ve mentioned about other people’s hair. I really don’t give a damn. The women who say “I hate to see long hair on little girls” downright creep me out. I can’t imagine what kind of a person looks at a child and feels hatred towards their hair.

My hair almost touches my bum and I have never been told anything but good things. I dont think I've ever heard of anyone not liking long hair.

Each to their own I say

StillMedusa · 01/11/2020 20:06

My Mum has a tendency to mention how 'you have to be careful not to look witchy as you get older' Cheers Mum! I let mine grow during lockdown and now it's the longest it's ever been.. bra strap length..and shock, horror, streaked with grey.

Pass me my witches hat and broom Grin

We can't win.. long and we are mutton dressed up as lamb after 40, short and it's 'I want to speak to the manager' jibes!

Everyone should have it however they please!

No, I've never come across anti-long hair comments. I've never had short hair... I'm nearly 60 now. Mind you, given that it's last cut was in February, I might have to let DH loose on it so that might inadvertently change. Meh, it'll grow again.Grin

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 01/11/2020 20:11

My hair was long until senior school when my mum got it cut into an inverted bob which I really hated on me, I have a round face and feel short hair makes me look rounder. I grew it again and got it permed at 13, but my nan keeps suggesting that I should cut it short now and that women in their 40s don't suit long hair. My mum just rolls her eyes about my hair now, she hates the colour (bright red) but dyes it for me anyway, she has given up trying to convince me to have it cut, even though it is falling out and I leave little hairy deposits on the sofa and cushions Grin

FatCatThinCat · 01/11/2020 20:12

I have thick, silky, waist length wavy auburn hair. It's my only decent feature and looks like hair out of shampoo commercial. But apparently I should get it cut short as I'm almost 50. Even my hairdresser suggested it last time I was there.

TroysMammy · 01/11/2020 20:12

My hair is long and straight and I have not had a fringe for years. I've had it short, permed, bobbed, shoulder length but my DM used to regularly say "do something with your hair" or "you look like a squaw". Until I pointed out to her that she'd had the same short style since well before I was born, I'm 52.

RandomMess · 01/11/2020 20:31

My work colleague goes on and on and on about my long hair and how I should get a fringe and how I should colour my hair.

She is so beyond rude tbh!

She clearly has never learnt manners....

RandomMess · 01/11/2020 20:32

@FatCatThinCat perhaps we are twins... mine isn't wavy now it's so long!!

blossomtree323 · 01/11/2020 21:42

I've always wanted to grow mine really long. Unfortunately it stops growing mid back and last time I got it that long, it started to break off Sad

I've never understood the thing about women turning 40 and suddenly getting their hair cut short. Women of any age can look good with long hair. As for it looking "unprofessional" - WTF?

ErrolTheDragon · 01/11/2020 23:21

As for it looking "unprofessional" - WTF?

Weird. Mind you, I work in software, so I've had colleagues with longer hair ... plus beard, and with balding top.Grin

peoplearepeople · 01/11/2020 23:24

Yep!. My mum has done this to me for years. Growing up she made me have a very short bob and a fringe. (the same haircut she's always had) At the same time she always used to go on about other girls "lovely long hair". It made me feel so ugly and like I wasn't worth having long hair like those other girls.
I grew it long when i hit my late teens and she couldn't do anything about it. I've had it varying lengths from shoulder to bum since then, but she always makes it clear with little comments here and there that I should have a nice sensible hair cut like her. Luckily I'm too nice to tell her that I hate her lego person haircut. I just make it clear that my taste is different to hers and wouldn't feel comfortable with hair like that.

ShimmeringIce · 01/11/2020 23:27

My mum was the other way round, and would express her preference every time my hair was above chin length or any colour but dark brown (having cut, permed and let her hair turn grey at 40). Eventually even compliments annoyed me. Wish people would mind their own business!

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 01/11/2020 23:29

Every time I had my hair done my mother would say “Oh, it was just starting to look nice” Confused

fuckedandbombed · 01/11/2020 23:30

I'm 48 . For the first time ever my hair is bra strap length. I curl it . I love it . I feel younger than ever and get zillions of compliments. I've never looked my age but wearing my hair long and wavy is very flattering.

Elzbells · 01/11/2020 23:33

I have gorgeous thick long blonde hair. My mum would be never let me grow it long as a child as it was "too difficult".

I'm now 45, very slim and often have young guys checking me out before they see my face and realise I'm old enough to be their mother!

I find it funny and I'm not cutting my hair! I spent plenty of years with a Princess Diana style.

Elzbells · 01/11/2020 23:34

And my mother still tells me to get a Demi wave and give it some body!

Gilead · 02/11/2020 00:45

62, long, grey streaked hair. Don’t give a damn!

ChasedByFox · 02/11/2020 00:52

Ha! @Elzbells lads do the same to me...then slink off when they see the face Grin

iswhois · 02/11/2020 00:57

My mums obsession has always been with me having dark roots with my bleach blonde hair (I've bleached it for years)

After every single hair dressing appointment I've ever been to (and been feeling chuffed with how I looked) it's - "oh in a couple of weeks when the roots grow in it will be lovely"

"Your hair looks lovely now the dark roots have grown in" etc etc

I've realised in actual fact everyone seems to have an opinion about my hair which they are very vocal about

DH likes it long

One friend doesn't like my hair with a fringe

One friend likes my hair short

I just ignore everyone now and do what I like!!!!!!

AlwaysLatte · 02/11/2020 01:05

OldAndWornOut · 02/11/2020 01:10
Grin I know just the style.
GlamGiraffe · 02/11/2020 01:23

My hair is longish. I prefer it shorter(still below the sholders) (it will now bexdownbyo my knees die to lovkfown ifcthe hairdtesser cant cut it before😬)
Without fail, every time i have my hair cut, usually several inches by the time i get round to it, everyone is dismayed...long hair is apparently much nicer🤷‍♀️....(except i prefer it a bit shorter still longn as ots more manageable) ....im outvoted en masse. Im 44.
Long hair being not good when you are older is definitely an old fashioned thing. It also applies to times when women didnt regularly take an interest in/ take care of their hair with frequent cuts colours and blowdries which can make ypu look miles better and really refreshed.
Sounds like you just have a moaner on your hands. Book her in to the salon for something terrifyingly daring so she cant moan about your hair anymore!

k1233 · 02/11/2020 01:33

Another forced to have short hair as a child who has had long hair since I could choose. I'm at the age where people say you should have short hair - not going to happen! I hate short hair with a passion.

I've got fine, thick, curly hair and had issues with breakage. Since using hair oil, it no longer breaks and grows much longer. I got about 4-6 inches cut off last hair cut - no one noticed... It was just looking a bit flat for my liking.
