How much do you pay attention to / remember usernames?

ladybee28 · 01/11/2020 14:32

Just that, really.

I definitely have a few names that I recognise when I see them, but not enough to remember how/in what context I've encountered them before.

I've noticed recently a few people namechecking other posters: "So-and-so will be along in a minute to say X" or "Such-and-such usually has a good idea of things like that".

There seem to be so many posters here, I'm amazed at how some people seem to keep track, not just of familiar names but of personalities, too.

Do you?

Only when I see them really.
But I am rubbish with names anyway.

Bunniesitmustbebunnies · 02/11/2020 02:15

I change mine occasionally. As I’m sure a lot of people do so I don’t pay any attention to other people’s usernames

EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus · 02/11/2020 06:21

Vagrant toasters & supermarket checkouts. That’s what I remember. Hello Chaos.

And ShowOfHands, you liked being Showy, not SOH. Although shortenings aren’t so much a thing nowadays with the @.

Sittinbythesea · 02/11/2020 06:27

I joined in 2007, used to recognise lots of names. Maybe people name changed less often. It did feel a bit more like a club then. I recognise ohyoubadkitten (or something like that) for her weather expertise but that’s about it now!

Hailtomyteeth · 02/11/2020 06:49

No. Not even my own. I have an A4 side of the name-changes I can remember. I think I have been here seven years. My dd was on MN, I would read and comment on her threads/posts not realising it was her, even though I knew her username. I don't look at them. I read all about her traumatic birthing experience and injuries, didn't realise it was her until later.

The odd one sticks - Bluntness because she was so unfailingly rude at the start (I think she's mellowed), Worra and Anyfucker (not to my taste), people with 'tea' in their names including the woman who slept on the sofa for years (dh wouldn't let her into bed and was turning their children against her) and the woman who worked with wolves. AtYourCervix, great name for a midwife. I never noted the names of former colleagues, though I have spotted them from time to time. And someone outed herself as almost certainly a former pupil recently, didn't note her name either.

I admire people who can think of clever usernames. If I notice them.

Sparklingbrook · 02/11/2020 07:00

@Marmaladecake

Sparklingbrook yours was the first name I thought of when I saw this thread. Your name sounds lovely and you always seem nice too. Now I sound like a stalker 😆 I do also recognise chaostrulyreigns as a blast from the past.
That’s nice of you. SmileNot sure it’s a universal opinion but I am past caring about that. If you cared what people thought of you on here you’d never post a thing. Grin
BeingATwatItsABingThing · 02/11/2020 07:00

I recognise the majority that are mentioned on here.

I often float about on the education board or any posts about teaching so recognise @LolaSmiles. I almost always agree with her.

Some names I just recognise when I see them because I’ve seen them a few times before. Some names I know because I have been part of a continual chat thread so we got to know each other.

KatherineJaneway · 02/11/2020 07:02

@giantangryrooster

I’ve noticed that people do “listen” more to a better known name. I remember a while back I posted some advice on a thread, nothing was said but a couple of pages later a more “popular” poster than me said basically the same thing and this was then followed by several “listen to that poster, they are right on the money” etc and I did feel slightly miffed!

Haven't we all been there Grin.

Yup Grin
nicerbeing · 02/11/2020 07:10

Bertrandrussel always stuck in my mind but they disappeared Sad

WomenAndVulvas · 02/11/2020 08:08

I don't even read the username unless the post is particularly annoying. There are only a handful of names I recognise.

ShowOfHands · 02/11/2020 08:37

@EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus I not only preferred being called Showy, I think I insisted upon it but that sort of intransigence is no longer permitted and so I suffer being addressed by my full name like some sort of naughty child. I've moved from it being almost childish petulance to sounding like some sort of aged lady of the night barking "call me Showy" at younger and cooler posters. Every now and then, somebody gets it right and I feel inordinately happy but it happens less and less.

EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus · 02/11/2020 09:02

It’s the @ thing, Showy. Everyone just clicks on it now & gets the full names.

Lazy.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 02/11/2020 09:09

I remember people usually because of negative things. Theres two posters that I can think of that are vile, and only crop up to put the boot into someone.

formerbabe · 02/11/2020 09:14

Yes I recognise loads...all the usual ones mentioned. Haven't seen jacqueshammer for ages...we used to disagree about everything Grin
pumpkinp doesn't seem to be around much either anymore.

Hiccupiscal · 02/11/2020 09:17

Another one who notices @bluntness100, also a few posters who have the UN "Username" followed by number, although I think there's a few like that, but one in particular has a certain writing style.

I've NC often, usually because I've posted something outing and it's a huge concern of mine to be recognised, although I doubt it would actually happen.

Ive actually stuck to this UN for a while l, or I come back to it. I lurk more than I post however, so don't think I'm very recognisable anyway.

Other than that, I'm unlikely to take notice of UN unless there's reason (ie something directed to me, an obvious troll etc)

schitter · 02/11/2020 09:20

I definitely remember the arseholes.

missmouse101 · 02/11/2020 09:23

@nobloodyholly, I'm sure I know! Baby names threads? Grin

NoBloodyHolly · 02/11/2020 19:28

@missmouse101 I couldn’t possibly comment Wink

KooKooKachu · 02/11/2020 21:46

SoulofanAggron - hope I've spelled that right - always posts sage advice. I feel like they have lived before, they seem so wise.

EvaporatedHour · 02/11/2020 22:38

I recognise a few; mainly ones that have been on here for years and that speak to people like shit! They're often very hypocritical too.

EvaporatedHour · 02/11/2020 22:40

Oh and I miss Lequeen and her bragging!

DramaLlama12 · 02/11/2020 22:53

My ds2 was born in 2000 and I’m sure I joined when he was about 4 years old .. I do recognise some names cropped up on here
It was NEVER this busy , there was like literally a couple threads I’m sure , you could go off make a brew and come back to find posts , You’d never have to sift through posts and threads like you do now
Btw I know her name crops up often on threads like these but does COD frequent this site still .
I know she moved more to S&b but one post always stuck with me about the M&S member of staff that chewed gum .. absolutely hysterically laughing I was how disgusted COD was about it
Particular style of writing that one

DramaLlama12 · 02/11/2020 22:54

I think she was a teacher if memory serves

DramaLlama12 · 02/11/2020 23:00

I’m more a lurker tho rather than a poster , I don’t think I’ve particularly stood out in any way ..I have about 5 different usernames as I don’t want to be recognised by work colleagues , friends and neighbours who I know come on here

somelemons · 02/11/2020 23:16

I recognise quite a few of the names already mentioned, but that might be because they've been mentioned before in similar threads to this one.
