If you had to suggest just ONE healthy eating habit, what would it be?

Dreading this lockdown. I am in such a bad cycle of losing weight in summer, and putting it all back on through toast in the winter 😫

Eat really really really slowly.

You will get full after eating less.

nibdedibble · 01/11/2020 15:34

Cut out sugar. It means seriously restricting fruit (I just have the odd apple) but you can up your veg no problem. Don’t have sugar replacements, don’t be fooled into baking with dates or any of that, never drink fruit juice. Stop eating at 7:30/8pm. There are very few sugar-free alcoholic drinks, vodka is ok but what would you drink it with? So cut back on drinking.

I promise you, I’m your classic ‘ive been cursed with a sweet tooth’ and I can do this. It’s been four months and it’s really far far easier physically than you’d ever imagine. And the brain fog I’ve been suffering from has all but gone. It’s not that I’ll never have a pudding again but it’s just not good to eat as much sugar as we do so...don’t! Grin

Fruit is good for you!

Eat slowly and mindfully

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 01/11/2020 15:38

I am also cursed with a sweet tooth and carb cravings, and also a terrible evening snacker. Then I cut right back on carbs and started doing 16:8, and I now never have carb or sugar cravings finless I've had some refined carbs or sugar. Even then I can ignore them and they go away.

I think the single biggest thing that has changed my eating habits is the 16:8 - I stop eating at 6pm now, and it's totally fine. It took some getting used to but having that 'rule' in place made it so much easier.

Also realising that feeling hunger isn't actually a bad thing. Some night I go to bed feeling a bit hungry, but I never wake up feeling hungry any more. When I used to snack all evening I would wake up feeling ravenous.

Choccyp1g · 01/11/2020 15:39

Don't go food shopping when you are hungry.

It makes it much easier to not buy unnecessary snacks pork pies.

Choccyp1g · 01/11/2020 15:40

Another one that works for me, is to get into jamas and clean your teeth straight after your evening meal.

hollyhope · 01/11/2020 15:41

Eat within a 12 hour window, eg 7am to 7pm.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 01/11/2020 15:43

Another saying don't drink calories unless its wine I drink black coffee, mint tea or water in the day.

Plan your meals and snacks, so you aren't deciding when already hungry what you are having for lunch.

maddiemookins16mum · 01/11/2020 16:09

Stop snacking now.

InsaneProbably · 01/11/2020 16:13

My one thing would be to have pre-set mealtimes (and snack times if you want) and never eat at any other time - and also do eat at those times you decided you would. (I stick to this maybe six days a week?)

Generally be boring, have routine and plan things ahead. But that's probably more than one advice.

I'm not a volume eater, so just sticking to three meals a day leaves me not really eating enough. Five small meals (or three meals and two snacks, if you want to call it that, although they're all pretty similar in terms of calories) works for me. Probably wouldn't work for everyone.

MrsJBaptiste · 01/11/2020 16:35

I've just started low carbing, intermittent fasting and power walking/running 5km a day.

Hoping the weight falls off as quickly as it did last time I put in the effort to lose w bit of weight! 🤞

Crunchymum · 01/11/2020 16:49

Low GI works well for me (which is essentially eating foods that don't cause a spike in blood sugar levels, so you don't get cravings). It cuts out most refined sugar.

Use my MFP but log before you eat. If you fancy Macdonalds for dinner, enter it into MFP and once you see the calories decide if it is really worth it (sometimes it is, mostly it isn't). By logging in advance you can make healthier changes.... a portion of mash is 300cals but if you swap for a portion of new potaoes its 150cals!!

Limit alcohol

NoMoreFlowers · 01/11/2020 16:51

Porridge for breakfast

Rudolphian · 01/11/2020 16:51

Not eating until you are hungry.
So many people just eat because it's time. But they aren't actually hungry.

Sgtmajormummy · 01/11/2020 17:14

Be good to yourself. Everybody falls off the wagon and life gets in the way. You wouldn’t jump to criticizing somebody else‘s mistakes, so why do it to yourself??
Drink at least two litres of water a day.
Eat basic ingredients and cook for yourself. That way you know there are no hidden sugars etc.
Eat dinner early. I do low carb 17:7 with lunch at 1 and always finishing dinner before 8. It makes evenings more productive (I’m out two evenings a week) and you sleep better if you don’t slob out on the sofa in a carb-induced stupour until it’s too late to do anything but crawl into bed.

And it’s been found that most people start consuming their fat reserves after 12 hours of fasting. Some before. So if you were good yesterday and ate a reasonable amount (yes, it’s still calories in vs. out) you’re getting slimmer. If you were not so good, at least you’re making up for it today.

lissie123 · 01/11/2020 17:16

Weight watchers was great for me. Better eating habits developed. Lost two stone. I now baulk at processed food. It’s very odd.I kind of retrained my palate but it took four months over lockdown.

MrsMarrio · 01/11/2020 17:22

Don't buy all the lovely tasty snacks. If they aren't I the cupboard, you can't eat them all in one day

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 01/11/2020 18:03

Yes - not having unhealthy food in, coupled with having delicious healthy food available makes it so much easier to make the good choice. I always have lots of fruit around, and if I snack it is a piece of fruit.

MrsJonesAndMe · 01/11/2020 18:05

Drink water

shamalidacdak · 01/11/2020 18:19

Skip breakfast and only eat food you prepare from scratch

Ilovesausages · 01/11/2020 18:36

It’s about figuring out what you need. Sounds like for you, no toast?

For me it HAS to include portion control because I’m a glutton, so currently I’m calorie counting using MFP. also Increased protein which as a vegetarian can slip down if I don’t keep an eye on it.

Susanwouldntlikeit · 01/11/2020 18:38

Kefir.
For good gut bacteria helping immune system and reduces hunger pangs. Cheap in Asda Polish section.

annagroom · 01/11/2020 18:50

Eat a good healthy breakfast. It gives you a starting energy. Do not eat cereals, yoghurt and other so called healthy breakfast shit

Pikachubaby · 01/11/2020 18:53

I find eating at regular times is important

If I skip breakfast, I’ll fancy biscuits with my coffee at 10!

If I eat a tiny lunch, I am ravenous by 4pm

Etc etc

Am keeping my weight in check by sticking to regular meal times
