What will happen to all those extra large turkeys that serve up to 18 people?

Assuming we'll all be in our groups of 6 or less for Christmas, what will happen to them and all those party size platters which are presumably already made and sitting in Iceland's deep freeze.

Turkey sandwiches until March 😕

Imissmoominmama · 31/10/2020 21:48

I’ll buy a couple live and keep them as pets.

DinosApple · 31/10/2020 21:48

My DF has ordered his usual size turkey, 2.5kg! In normal years it would do 14 greedy servings, plus leftovers for two for a week or more.
This year it will do three for three months I reckon 😂.

Imissmoominmama · 31/10/2020 21:49

I’ll call them Tina and Tony.

Thewhalewhisperer · 31/10/2020 21:49

I read something saying turkeys were being slaughtered early and frozen whilst still small, or put on a "diet". No idea where I read it though sorry.

Runningdownthathill · 31/10/2020 21:50

Perhaps they’ll live to see another day..

BunnyBoilerRhian · 31/10/2020 21:50

Turkey curry. Turkey lasagne. Turkey casserole. Turkey salad. Turkey pasta bake.

The love affair with Turkey might end by March 2021!

throwaway100000 · 31/10/2020 21:51

I assume the supermarkets etc will donate the food? That’s what restaurants did with their current stock when they abruptly shut in March.

MushMonster · 31/10/2020 21:52

I think there will be half or quarter ones for sale. Or the freezer will be full of turkey leftovers for a while!

AdoraBell · 31/10/2020 21:54

I have no idea what to order this year. We invited stepson and his DP, if DDs come home from Uni we’ll be 6, if not it will just be DH and me.

PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 31/10/2020 21:59

I heard an interview with a turkey farmer on the radio who said that many farmers had anticipated smaller gatherings at Xmas so had stocked up with chicks from breeds that are smaller than the usual large growing breeds. They said supermarkets are likely to stock up more on turkey parts like ready to cook crowns to feed smaller groups 🍗

wowfudge · 31/10/2020 22:02

I heard that too. It was a few weeks ago too.

waltzingparrot · 31/10/2020 22:06

Ah, sounds like the turkey farmers planned ahead. I'm being a bit pessimistic really, because if we do get the rate below one, they might increase group size for Christmas. Then we'll all have to buy two turkeys.

I run a food bank. We were in Easter eggs till about July and will have two straight weeks of pumpkins coming in from supermarket surplus, from Monday. I expect it’ll be turkey 28 December through about March for us.

copperoliver · 31/10/2020 22:27

Apparently they put turkeys on a diet so they don't get so large as they won't sell them. X

HollowTalk · 31/10/2020 22:28

@DinosApple

My DF has ordered his usual size turkey, 2.5kg! In normal years it would do 14 greedy servings, plus leftovers for two for a week or more. This year it will do three for three months I reckon 😂.
But that's only 5-6 lbs.
Torvean32 · 01/11/2020 00:50

Sticking with chicken!

HotToCold · 01/11/2020 00:52

Will do beef or lamb this year

Never liked Turkey anyway!!!

HotToCold · 01/11/2020 00:53

Does anyone actually even like Turkey?

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 01/11/2020 01:01

Hopefully the turkeys get to live. 😊

Gancanny · 01/11/2020 01:07

I'll buy the usual one I get and do up plates for FIL and his DP and DH's aunt that either DH or I can drop at their doorsteps on Christmas Day, will also plate them each up some spare turkey for sandwiches/curry.

safariboot · 01/11/2020 01:24

I see the Mumsnet -chicken- turkey has already made an appearance upthread.

Assuming restrictions are still in place - and I wouldn't be surprised if we see them lifted for the Christmas week - then I predict a decent number of large turkeys will be bought by scofflaws who host a big gathering anyway.

grassisjeweled · 01/11/2020 01:26

They actually put the poor turkeys on diets?

lyralalala · 01/11/2020 01:45

Big families like mine will still buy them.

GlowingOrb · 01/11/2020 01:51

I’ll order my normal small turkey, but know that the butcher might hand me something bigger than I hoped. It’s happened before. It just means I have to start cooking a bit earlier and stock up on vacuum sealing bags for freezing the leftovers.
