What the hell do I do with all this cake!

So, I ordered a cake for my DS's birthday and my god it's huge. They told me it fed 18. There's four of us in the house and I knew I could palm off some to at least 8 school friends..as a family we had some yesterday and then I've cut another 12 slices for today to hand out to friends and have ourselves... there's still half of the bastarding thing left.

Now don't get me wrong, I like a challenge but I can't face the idea of eating cake every day for a week and would never allow the kids to have birthday cake 7 days in a row.

What can I do? It's going to have to go in the bin isn't it? Could I potentially post some to family who are too far away to visit? Seems such a waste!

Yeah that’s a Lilliputian slice of cake. No wonder you have loads left.

MonClareDevole · 31/10/2020 09:50

That’s the correct size slice for an under 7/8 yo.
Twice the size for an adult.
Cake freezes well.

LeaveMyDamnJam · 31/10/2020 09:50

I don’t like cake and never eat it but even I know those slices don’t pass muster.

That’s the slice I eat when I’m on a diet, as I am now!

MaudebeGonne · 31/10/2020 09:52

Ditch the fondant, double your slice size, and enjoy for the next 2-3 days

ATowelAndAPotato · 31/10/2020 09:52

That’s the size of a “slice” that you put in kids party bags.
It’s not the size of a slice that you eat at home with a cup of tea/coffee/glass of wine.
Go wild OP, have a bigger slice! Cake

BeepBoopBop · 31/10/2020 09:53

@BrummyMum1

Those are more of a slither than a slice IMO Grin
My thoughts exactly! I've seen bigger crumbs than that! 🤣
ShirleyPhallus · 31/10/2020 09:53

Oh god op. So sorry to break it to you. You ARE one of those Mumsnetters.

Please take my informal quiz to tell us more:

  1. When serving sausages and mash, would you serve yourself:
a) 3 sausages and 2 dollops of mash, a big spoon of peas and gravy Or b) 1 sausage, a tablespoon of mash, 5 peas and a drizzle of gravy then declare yourself “stuffed”
  1. Do you believe a “family size” pizza from dominoes to, indeed, be able to feed a whole family of 2 adults and 2 children?
(And question 2.1 - would you have leftovers?)

Please let us know and we can confirm

I wouldn't eat the icing but I second serving it with custard.

copernicium · 31/10/2020 09:55

It's the new Mumsnet Chicken

Goatinthegarden · 31/10/2020 09:55

I am careful about what I eat, but all bets are off for a slice of cake.

Like a previous poster, I’d ditch the fondant...then I’d triple the size of the sponge.

AuldFox · 31/10/2020 09:55

Oooh i heard about the fabled MN undereaters...

Fruitteatime · 31/10/2020 09:55

That cake will be stale before it reaches the recipients! Freeze those wafer thin slices for yourself and be more generous.

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 31/10/2020 09:56

Jesus! That’s a misers portion of cake! Have you never had a slice of cake in a coffee shop or restaurant? I’d be complaining big time if I got such a stingy piece!

Even the emoji slice of 🍰 is bigger than you’re serving! 😂

SaskiaRembrandt · 31/10/2020 09:56

1 sausage, a tablespoon of mash, 5 peas and a drizzle of gravy then declare yourself “stuffed”

Someone's quite the greedyguts! I think half a sausage, a teaspoon of mash and two peas is more than enough. And obviously no gravy, that stuff is literal poison Grin

SebastianTheCrab · 31/10/2020 09:57

You can give it away on Olio a food donation app. It's fab.

FedUpWithItAllWeep · 31/10/2020 09:57

In fairness the kids are all six and under!

I'm actually quite proud it's a small slice, I'm far from skinny and like my food 🤣 Altho, one of my least favourite things is icing, I find it a bit sickly and I think that's the bit I worry about being a bit too much seven days in a row (especially on top of all the Halloween treats we've had this week!)

But the freezer is an excellent idea (if I can find any space!)

That would be a perfectly acceptable piece of cake in my world @FedUpWithItAllWeep particularly for a child, depending on their age it could be smaller. I never really understand why people often recognise little people eat proportionally to adults except where treats are involved when eating the same as a grown man multiple times their size seems to be fair game. No wonder we have an obesity crisis. I was horrified when 5 year old Nephew brought a packed lunch to ours and it contained 5 bourbon biscuits which was normal for him. My giant 18 year old son wouldn't eat 5 bourbons and he actually needs to eat about 4,0000 calories a day!

Someonesayroadtrip · 31/10/2020 09:58

Haha. I have these says issues, lots of lockdown birthdays with too much cake so far. I have twins next Month which always means too much cake and then another birthday in December, we end up wasting a lot of cake unfortunately.

RJnomore1 · 31/10/2020 09:59

You called???

IsAnybodyListening · 31/10/2020 10:00

That slice is what in my house we would call 'A suggestion of cake'. Three of your slices would be a portion here.

ShirleyPhallus · 31/10/2020 10:00

Oooooh fantastic. Competitive under eating and the phrase “obesity crisis” in one thread and it’s not even reached a full page! Mumsnet bingo here we come!

xyzandabc · 31/10/2020 10:00

Those slices are like you'd slice a fruit cake.

But it's a sponge cake. So if the cake was round, I'd expect triangle shaped slices. If it was square/rectangle shaped I'd expect block shaped slices.
However either way, if you've got more than you can eat, just freeze it. Don't bin cake.

devildeepbluesea · 31/10/2020 10:00

I'm with you OP. That slice of cake is fine. But then I'm not that keen on cake. I wish they made birthday cakes out of crisps or something.

Anotherducker · 31/10/2020 10:03

Don’t bin it! Cut bigger slices and give the neighbours some.
