The inflatable ones? I’m really tempted and always wanted one.

Can anyone tell me about the running of one, mainly rough costs??

Tia

I have one! I love it, and yes it costs a bloody fortune to run especially in winter but I love it in winter even more. Adds around a third to my yearly electric bill, averaging about £10 a week throughout the year to run. Worth every penny.

Gardenista · 31/10/2020 12:10

Join the Facebook group lay z spa hot tub owners who will give you all the info . I have one purchase in July and used daily until September, but switched it off In September due to cost of running it over winter

Holyrivolli · 31/10/2020 12:10

We have one but no idea about the running costs. I was dubious at first but we’ve really enjoyed it over the past few years. Lovely to relax in the evening. Our favourite is the Christmas Eve hottub tradition although we did buy a dome to go over it to protect from the worst of the U.K. winter weather.

Chemicals are not expensive if you buy unbranded ones online but don’t know what the electricity costs are. Read somewhere that it’s £2 per day which sounds reasonable as it’s not on all year.

Feminist10101 · 31/10/2020 12:15

We have a massive one (8 seater, 10 years old) which was up for about 7 months this year over the summer (so arguably should take less electricity to heat than in winter). That, plus additional working from home has cost about £600 in those 7 months.

It’s now been put away as they aren’t really supposed to be used in the winter.

Tryingtokeepsafe · 31/10/2020 15:03

I work from home... don’t go out a great deal at all really as have dc with SN who love water... I’m thinking i will probably use it more in the winter! Iv decided to put it in the shed as it is covered and has electricity... any recommendations of which type? Or what extras I should get?

Feminist10101 · 31/10/2020 15:23

I wouldn’t put it in a wooden structure. The steam won’t be good for the wood.

CommunistLegoBloc · 31/10/2020 15:30

Definitely don't put it in a shed.

We have one, not sure on the running costs but tbh once we've sorted the garden I'll be getting a 'proper' one. The inflatable ones just aren't that comfy, and they're not meant to be used in cold weather, which for me is the whole point.

Tryingtokeepsafe · 31/10/2020 15:35

Really? Even if I get a cover??

OP posts:
Tryingtokeepsafe · 31/10/2020 15:35

What if I paint some protector stuff on the wood?

I have the garage? I could re jig that?

scryingeyes · 31/10/2020 16:01

Really want one too. Thinking of buying an inflatable one to see if I can be bothered with the maintenance before insisting DH buys me a proper one!

Tryingtokeepsafe · 31/10/2020 16:03

I’m definitely doing it @scryingeyes! Iv wanted one for so long. Would like a proper one but I rent so worry about moving it and space etc if I have to move...

scryingeyes · 31/10/2020 16:05

I've asked for one for Christmas but might have well asked for the crown jewels 😀

icedaisy · 31/10/2020 16:12

You will need a cover (if you mean lid) wherever you put it, otherwise it is going to be constantly working to stay warm and will cost a fortune. Cover only comes off when you are in it.

You want it outside, somewhere close to a drain and within reach of a tap. If not a drain somewhere you can send the water because you need to empty it about every six weeks depending on use.

I got a fairly cheap pump from Amazon that empties it in about half an hour. Takes a couple of hours to fill and about 24 to heat. We went for a soft tub which is sort of between the hard and the lazy spa options.

Other costs are filters, chlorine and stabliser for the water. Ph test strips last ages but also needed.

Certainly wouldn't want it inside, nothing nicer than sitting in dark outside.

Tryingtokeepsafe · 31/10/2020 16:12

Grin buy it for yourself for Christmas! That’s what I’m doing!

We had one bit sold it as it was ridiculously expensive to run. Kinda wish we'd kept it now with lockdown two on the way.

Icanflyhigh · 31/10/2020 16:27

I have one, bought it ex rental from a bouncy castle company a few years ago for 200 quid.

Its fab, costs less than a fiver a week to run and if you're careful and look after the water, you can get away with changing water once every 4-6 weeks.

Tryingtokeepsafe · 31/10/2020 16:54

I want one with the lights in, is that worth it or are the extra thing you can buy to stick on for the lights sufficient?

OP posts:
Feminist10101 · 31/10/2020 17:08

You don’t have to use chlorine, BTW. We use oxygen tablets and weekly maintenance meant we only had to empty and refill once in 6 months.

Tryingtokeepsafe · 31/10/2020 17:15

I would love not to use chlorine as I get eczema, I didn’t know that thanks!

Can anyone recommend a smaller model? I’m looking at perhaps the Havana?

I have a lazyspa Vegas. Bloody love it! I usually have to fight the kids to get in though 😂

I switched to Octopus Energy agile flex tariff. The price per kW changed hourly to reflect cost of supply, and at night usually drops to about 3p/kw. So I only heat it at night and costs me very little.

Mumbum2011 · 31/10/2020 17:19

We got the lazy spa honolulu during lockdown and it saved our sanity. My dh was dubious but we used it every day. Love it! We've just put it down as we're moving.

Tryingtokeepsafe · 31/10/2020 17:21

Thanks both, so the bigger ones. I only need a 2-4 person... so i can’t work out what to get? Hawaii... Havana??

The idea of an inflatable hot tub sited in a garage doesn't sound very relaxing to me.

An alternative (and cheaper) solution would be to sit in your bath, with foam and twenty candles having previously eaten four tins of Baked Beans. Grin

Actually the naked flames and baked beans should probably not be combined. So use a battery operated light.
