If you drink mead, is it primarily because you want to live in days of yore?

I bought some and I’m not sure if it’s because I like it or because I have an inner suppressed wench.

It’s nice but also kind of funky.

Ooh, mead is nice. It's best enjoyed by an open fire, with unrelenting drizzle on the other side of the window. Both times I've been to Libersfarne I've bought a bottle and it's not lasted long. To be fair, I also like Madeira and ginger wine so I might be channeling my ancestors through the medium of mucked-about-with wine.

BoogleMcGroogle · 28/10/2020 18:03

Lindesfarne obvs.

It's not really a wenchy drink. I'd say more nunny.

Branleuse · 28/10/2020 18:04

yes. I want to live as a kind of hobbit/goblin

Entrant6 · 28/10/2020 18:06

I’m drinking this right now. It is nice but it’s also a bit weird. I’ve never been to Lindisfarne but yet, I see the monk vibe. Nuns surely did not maketh mead?

Monks were always red hot keen on making booze. Can't see any reason nuns wouldn't get in on the action.

LangClegTheBeardedVulture · 28/10/2020 18:11

Heather mead is tasty stuff. I like it as a special occasion treat or if I want to feel like a character from The Witcher.

Entrant6 · 28/10/2020 18:11

Ive never ever heard of nun booze.

Well, my ex-uni-tutor used to bring his own mead to dinners and he was very much about living in the past. Specifically the 13th century. So yes.

PurBal · 28/10/2020 18:12

I love mead. We had it as favours at our wedding.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 28/10/2020 18:13

We've brewed our own before now, it's quite easy...

Entrant6 · 28/10/2020 18:14

Tell us more @RhinestoneCowgirl

I love mead! It's a bit of both - definitely a longing for medieval times, but I also enjoy the taste. Fond memories of drinking it in a tent in Cornwall on our honeymoon when it rained everyday!

RainbowParadise · 28/10/2020 18:17

I hate the stuff 😂 I used to work for English Heritage and they sell loads of it in their shops and I bought some once using staff discount. It's just too sweet! But then I like really dry wine.

BogRollBOGOF · 28/10/2020 18:17

Mmm mead. It's been a couple of years since we had a bottle in.

RainbowParadise · 28/10/2020 18:18

I think I'm definitely more wench than nun though 😂 give me a tankard of ale any day over mead. Or cider!

forgetthehousework · 28/10/2020 18:18

No, it just tastes nice.
I mean would you really want to live in 'ye olden tymes' - plague, unable to travel further than a few miles, no dentists etc?
Ah, erm, there might be a slight flaw in my argument there .... Grin

(Actually, I'm a steampunk. We prefer gin or a nice cup of tea or, of course, a glass of tea flavoured gin!)

melisande99 · 28/10/2020 18:19

Because it's sweet and lovely! And a bit magical.

DowntonCrabby · 28/10/2020 18:21

This is disappointing, I’d much rather think I had an inner wench than an inner nun.

CorianderLord · 28/10/2020 18:21

I have drunk it twice and I did it to feel as though I ''twas in Yore. Don't love it.

fourquenelles · 28/10/2020 18:22

Mulled mead.......mmmmmmm. I go for the deep amber, thick varieties; unctuous in a good syrupy way.

I miss my tiny little pub with a rabbit warren of stalls at the back and a vat of mead warming up behind the bar.

CorianderLord · 28/10/2020 18:25

Ooooh ginger wine forgot about that

Entrant6 · 28/10/2020 18:27

@fourquenelles please tell me your pub is called The Prancing Pony.
Please.

Mulled mead sounds like the next level yore.
