Magazine subscriptions - do you have one? Any recommendations?

Just that really... are magazine subscriptions still a thing?

I'm trying to spend less time on social media/interwebs/phone and thinking of getting a new magazine subscription. For some kind of self care/me time.

Maybe something easy reading women's lifestyle perhaps... would be interested to know if anyone still has an old school magazine subscription and what you enjoy reading?

I used to enjoy Company magazine but I think that's no longer.. do enjoy the occasional home and foodie magazine too!

Need some inspo!

I had which? And gardeners world. Which is expensive and GW is just reworked articles and adverts. Gone downhill.

hopeishere · 28/10/2020 12:20

I have Red. It's ok. I used to get Grazia but I never read it so now I prefer to occasionally buy it if I fancy what's on the cover.

I get The Sunday Times travel mag sometimes and have thought about getting a subscription.

I prefer getting a few weekend papers. They have good supplements.

Serena1977 · 28/10/2020 12:25

I get gardeners world, puzzler collection and take a break monthly.

The Readly app is way better value - less than the cost of 2 magazines a month and you get access to hundreds of titles. You need an iPad or similar to get the best out of it though

VanCleefArpels · 28/10/2020 12:29

Oh and you can use it on several different devices so you can “gift” it to someone else too

snowspider · 28/10/2020 12:36

My treat is Country Living subscription. I like having the physical magazine and it stops me browsing the magazine shelves in the supermarket and getting tempted to buy other titles.

Katinski · 28/10/2020 12:44

Private Eye Grin

CeramicGuineaPig · 28/10/2020 12:46

I like Country Living too. I don't subscribe but I should, because I buy every issue and it would be cheaper.

MyView2 · 28/10/2020 12:46

I second the suggestion of Readly. One month free then £7.99 and I’ve got profiles set up for the whole family. It’s fab and you can access any magazine you like, there’s hundreds.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 28/10/2020 13:23

I get Kitchen Garden, and The English Garden. I used to get Red, and have just stopped my Country Living subscription (far too expensive now).

BubbleTeaJunkie · 28/10/2020 15:38

I'm really intrigued by Readly now... off to have a google.. it might not get me off my devices but it's technically offline so I guess it counts Grin

New Statesman - a good current affairs round-up
Children get National Geographic and I love the photography

Whydidibuythemclay · 28/10/2020 15:41

Check if your library has RBdigital or PressReader, both are free. Totally free. Ours has over 100 magazines from Vogue to New Scientist.

inchyra · 28/10/2020 16:04

I don’t think magazines, however you read them, are great self-care, TBH.

They exist to make you, your wardrobe and your surroundings feel inadequate.

They normalise being a member of a tiny group of very rich, very privileged and well-connected people with bullshit hobby businesses, so those of us who are less rich and have less social capital berate ourselves for being less successful than other people of the same age or educational attainment, not realising that a career in lampshade-making really doesn’t buy you a house in a leafy corner of west London. (It’s always a leafy corner and it’s always west London).

If you like pretty pictures for creative and inspiration purposes, Instagram and Pinterest are free.

ScrapThatThen · 28/10/2020 16:07

I am developing a serious subscription problem. I get
The Week
New Scientist
Private Eye
and am seriously considering
The Economist
The Spectator

BigusBumus · 28/10/2020 16:11

My MIL is a terrible present buyer so i ask for a magazine subscription every Christmas. I've had BBC Good Food for the last year and its been great and i think i will ask for it to carry on.

FluffyPersian · 28/10/2020 16:12

BBC Good Food - Had it for years, I pull out any recipes I've tried that are good and now I've got a whole folder full. I then give the magazine to my friend, who gives it to her Mum and then her Gran and then it gets recycled.

Decanter - Flipping love my wine and love learning more about it Smile

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/10/2020 16:14

We have had Mojo on subscription since it started.

The in hand experience is what we value mist. An e-subscription wouldn't be the same.

I also get an Embroiders Guild magazine, again the touch, feel of it is as much of a joy as the contents.

user1497207191 · 28/10/2020 16:14

No, nothing regular. I just pop into WH Smith every month or so and buy whatever I fancy at the time. I find regular subscriptions boring and repetitive.

CrochetBug · 28/10/2020 16:14

I've just spent the last bit of my birthday money on a 6 month subscription to an embroidery magazine. If I think it's worth it, and actually make use of it I'll renew it with my Christmas money Smile

geogteach · 28/10/2020 16:14

I have BBC Good Food and Country Walking magazine but second checking what your library offers . We get RBDigital which lets
You read loads of magazines for nothing

BigusBumus · 28/10/2020 16:16

I think you are only speaking for yourself there @inchyra, I'm sorry magazines make you feel that way, but your comment wasn't really in the spirit of the thread.

WitchesSpelleas · 28/10/2020 16:16

We have Private Eye on subscription.

Brightens up every other Wednesday for us!

EverydayDrudge · 28/10/2020 16:18

I have a really niche hobby one which I won't share because it's outing, and Calm magazine (bought with club card points).

I don’t think magazines, however you read them, are great self-care, TBH.

They exist to make you, your wardrobe and your surroundings feel inadequate.

I think a lot of women's magazines do, but I'm certain that that's not true across the board of all the different titles of magazines.

I also think that even if it is even partly true, they're still much healthier than social media addiction. Which is why I've tried digital copies but prefer paper ones. Guess who is trying to break their addiction

Erm ... not all magazines are 'Lifestyle' focused.

We've had recommendations on the thread for Nat Geographic, Private Eye, New Scientist ...
