Magazine subscriptions - do you have one? Any recommendations?

Just that really... are magazine subscriptions still a thing?

I'm trying to spend less time on social media/interwebs/phone and thinking of getting a new magazine subscription. For some kind of self care/me time.

Maybe something easy reading women's lifestyle perhaps... would be interested to know if anyone still has an old school magazine subscription and what you enjoy reading?

I used to enjoy Company magazine but I think that's no longer.. do enjoy the occasional home and foodie magazine too!

Need some inspo!

I second readly app - my sister and husband share it too so it's such good value. You can have multiple users, like Netflix.

I had a subscription to Psychologies magazine and stopped it when they started referring to women as menstruators Hmm

It’s a pity because I really loved it.

not realising that a career in lampshade-making really doesn’t buy you a house in a leafy corner of west London.

Have to agree with you about all those women with £££ houses and a career in lampshade-making husband is a hedge fund manager but we don't mention it That's why I stopped reading those kind of mags!

I read the Spectator pretty much cover to cover each week - it has a surprising breadth of viewpoints, not just Tories. Really independent thinkers and lovely writers like Tanya Gold and Matt Ridley and Lionel Shriver.

I can read magazines on my tablet free from my library. This has stopped me spending more on magazines.

I have a subscription to N Photo as they don't carry it and it's specific to Nikon photographers.

@WitchesSpelleas Agreed. I suppose magazines for me mean pictures more than words. I’d probably call the other publications you mention journals, but Economist and LRB etc are work not downtime for me.

If you have Tesco points, you can get magazine subscriptions much cheaper using those.

The Spectator & The Week (both online)
We haven’t had an actual newspaper or magazine for years as we read everything online except when I sometimes buy House & Garden for wishful thinking.
I wonder how long paper newspapers will last. Their decline has been much discussed but there still seem to be plenty of them on sale in the shops.

My mum passes me her copies of Vogue and Tatler when I go and visit her. I drop them straight in the recycling when I get back home. Awful things.

I don’t think magazines, however you read them, are great self-care, TBH.

Speak for yourself. Crochet and sewing both help my anxiety. Of course I could do them without the magazines, but I like treating myself occasionally.

Like others Readly has been the best thing ever. You can get trashy magazines for easy reading, the glossies like Prima Good Housekeeping. I love the American and Dutch craft magazines . A lot of the BBC publications - even comics for little ones. I have linked it for my son ( running magazines) my daughter in law ( baby and cookery magazines) .

Those of you who get Readly- would you say it's a user friendly app for older people? My parents are mid 70s and have a newspaper subscription on their tablet which would be covered by readly so it would make sense to switch, but they can only just about navigate the newspaper app- wondering if this would be easier or harder to use. Any thoughts?

I have Woman & Home (probably my favourite) and Good Housekeeping. I but a gift subscription to Ideal Home or another home type magazine for my sister's birthday, too.

I really look forward to my magazines dropping on the mat every month.

I am not very technical at all but I found Readly easy to use. I like that I could just press download and they are saved so always got magazines to read on train/ waiting rooms if needed.
also you get all the back issues.
Once you have read a few magazines you pick up how to use quite quickly .

Than you Nellie, I'll give it a go for them. On the newspaper subscription alone they'd be making a massive saving, it's something like £5.40 a week.

As above, I also access magazine downloads for free via my library account. I know it's more screen, but love the easy access and the choice. It was a great asset during lockdown. ( they also have a huge selection of audio book)

The other thing is I can download and try out..nothing to lose. Perhaps do that before you decide on a 'hardcopy' subscription
