Magazine subscriptions - do you have one? Any recommendations?

Just that really... are magazine subscriptions still a thing?

I'm trying to spend less time on social media/interwebs/phone and thinking of getting a new magazine subscription. For some kind of self care/me time.

Maybe something easy reading women's lifestyle perhaps... would be interested to know if anyone still has an old school magazine subscription and what you enjoy reading?

I used to enjoy Company magazine but I think that's no longer.. do enjoy the occasional home and foodie magazine too!

Need some inspo!

I second readly app - my sister and husband share it too so it's such good value. You can have multiple users, like Netflix.

I had a subscription to Psychologies magazine and stopped it when they started referring to women as menstruators Hmm

It’s a pity because I really loved it.

WitchesSpelleas · 28/10/2020 16:23

not realising that a career in lampshade-making really doesn’t buy you a house in a leafy corner of west London.

Have to agree with you about all those women with £££ houses and a career in lampshade-making husband is a hedge fund manager but we don't mention it That's why I stopped reading those kind of mags!

I read the Spectator pretty much cover to cover each week - it has a surprising breadth of viewpoints, not just Tories. Really independent thinkers and lovely writers like Tanya Gold and Matt Ridley and Lionel Shriver.

I do live in “a leafy corner of West London”Blush but fucking hate trophy wives with vanity businesses Grin

I can read magazines on my tablet free from my library. This has stopped me spending more on magazines.

I have a subscription to N Photo as they don't carry it and it's specific to Nikon photographers.

inchyra · 28/10/2020 16:43

@WitchesSpelleas Agreed. I suppose magazines for me mean pictures more than words. I’d probably call the other publications you mention journals, but Economist and LRB etc are work not downtime for me.

Onyourway · 28/10/2020 16:48

If you have Tesco points, you can get magazine subscriptions much cheaper using those.

The Spectator & The Week (both online)
We haven’t had an actual newspaper or magazine for years as we read everything online except when I sometimes buy House & Garden for wishful thinking.
I wonder how long paper newspapers will last. Their decline has been much discussed but there still seem to be plenty of them on sale in the shops.

BigusBumus · 28/10/2020 17:01

My mum passes me her copies of Vogue and Tatler when I go and visit her. I drop them straight in the recycling when I get back home. Awful things.

CrochetBug · 28/10/2020 17:04

@inchyra

I don’t think magazines, however you read them, are great self-care, TBH.

Speak for yourself. Crochet and sewing both help my anxiety. Of course I could do them without the magazines, but I like treating myself occasionally.

Like others Readly has been the best thing ever. You can get trashy magazines for easy reading, the glossies like Prima Good Housekeeping. I love the American and Dutch craft magazines . A lot of the BBC publications - even comics for little ones. I have linked it for my son ( running magazines) my daughter in law ( baby and cookery magazines) .
Great value

EverydayDrudge · 28/10/2020 17:56

Those of you who get Readly- would you say it's a user friendly app for older people? My parents are mid 70s and have a newspaper subscription on their tablet which would be covered by readly so it would make sense to switch, but they can only just about navigate the newspaper app- wondering if this would be easier or harder to use. Any thoughts?

mintich · 28/10/2020 18:04

I subscribe to Readly too, it's great!

ArranBound · 28/10/2020 18:43

I have Woman & Home (probably my favourite) and Good Housekeeping. I but a gift subscription to Ideal Home or another home type magazine for my sister's birthday, too.

I really look forward to my magazines dropping on the mat every month.

MellieNelba · 28/10/2020 18:54

I am not very technical at all but I found Readly easy to use. I like that I could just press download and they are saved so always got magazines to read on train/ waiting rooms if needed.
also you get all the back issues.
Once you have read a few magazines you pick up how to use quite quickly .

EverydayDrudge · 28/10/2020 19:48

Than you Nellie, I'll give it a go for them. On the newspaper subscription alone they'd be making a massive saving, it's something like £5.40 a week.

ForthPlace · 28/10/2020 20:50

As above, I also access magazine downloads for free via my library account. I know it's more screen, but love the easy access and the choice. It was a great asset during lockdown. ( they also have a huge selection of audio book)

The other thing is I can download and try out..nothing to lose. Perhaps do that before you decide on a 'hardcopy' subscription
