Just happened today. Needing to see dentist and have appt for Thurs. Has anyone had such a thing and what happened.

Hoping it doesn't cost a fortune.

I have participated in a covid research study so awaiting the test result too hoping it comes back soon so can see the dentist. Worried din case it gets painful. It's ok now but feeling sensitive. Argh

Hi, I had a bicycle accident when I was a teenager and lost a corner of a top front incisor. Dentist just sort of reconstructed the corner and while I can see it, it's not obvious the tooth has been 'fixed'. It has broken off again once but repaired again.
Can't say anything in regard to price as I have private dental insurance that covers pretty much everything.

Orangeblossom7777 · 27/10/2020 16:48

Thanks Sansa yes I have insurance too, only the first level so will cover some of the costs. That sounds similar, hoping mine might do the same

I know it is good to see them quickly. I don't want to lose the tooth if it gets infected or something. I have some temporary filling material which I have put on it (checked the dentists said this was OK)

It says up to £500 emergency and £200 crowns, so might need to pay quite a bit extra. Think it says about £600 for a crown (unsure if that is the right thing needed though)

Yes, when I was 11 I tripped and smashed my mouth on a wall - lost about a third of my front tooth. The dentist basically fitted a mould onto my tooth - the first one lasted about five years before coming off, but I've had the second one 25 years now and it's still in place with no issues.

I have no idea about costs but it only took about 30 minutes for him to "fix" it each time. No pain or anything now - it's just like a normal tooth. It's also not visible unless you're about two inches from my mouth Grin

Likewise I had a chipped front tooth “rebuilt” and it was much quicker than I had thought. You really wouldn’t know which bit was the new bit.

I can’t remember the cost but it definitely wasn’t the most expensive bit of dentistry! I think you may be pleasantly surprised

Orangeblossom7777 · 27/10/2020 18:07

Yes maybe it will be OK. I have terrified myself looking at treatments such as crowns and worrying the tooth might need replaced if can't get to see them soon due to waiting for this test. It will probably be fine. Thanks all. Flowers

Mine is patched with white filling. Will your dentist be able to do any treatment yet? ! Dh broke his upper front tooth in May but still no appointment to repair.

earsup · 27/10/2020 18:12

they can use composite and match colour, 20 mins job. cost from 50 to 100.

SansaClegane · 27/10/2020 18:21

Yes it's definitely not a crown! As earsup said, they match the tooth colour but it's basically like a filling?! I never had any pain in it, it was purely cosmetic, the tooth is fine. So try not to worry too much Wink

Orangeblossom7777 · 27/10/2020 18:26

Ok! I had something previously on both front teeth due to thinning enamel- some kind of composite filling (like a veneer but not as expensive) Wonder if it weakened the tooth somewhat

So, maybe they can do something like that again. I think about a third of the tooth is chipped off though.

Yes the dentist can do emergency appts - will fit me in Thurs, but due to this survey test need to get that back first. I've to ring them tomorrow - otherwise i guess we'll change it to another day

I'm lucky with the dentist- they are pretty good.

Dh had the assessment appointment but no treatment. On denplan. Are you in pain?

GrumpySausage · 27/10/2020 18:30

I had a chipped front tooth from childhood (got hit in the face with a dinner tray) and my dentist just filled it, couldn't tell at all. It was about the top quarter of the tooth.

It lasted 20 years until 6 days before my wedding when I ate a wine gum (don't even like them). Dentist again just rebuilt it and it looked perfect. Still there 7 years later. They can do wonders.

Orangeblossom7777 · 27/10/2020 19:16

Not really in pain bit feels sensitive. It has taken a bit of the internal part of the tooth (eugh). Just being careful as don't want it to worsen.

No, not Denplan, Simply Health dental.

Either built up with composite (like hard white filling) or crown if more work required.

Neither should hurt and it will look fine.

Maybe alter your bite a bit though ie cut apples up don't bite straight down into baguettes- take care of repair and it last years.

BurbageBrook · 27/10/2020 19:30

Ask about getting it filled in with composite. I had a huge chip and had it fixed with composite veneer for only £100, 2 years ago.

AliceAforethought · 27/10/2020 19:36

DD slipped in the bath when she was about 11 and broke off half of one of her front teeth. I was heartbroken as she had beautiful teeth, but, as others have said above, it was surprisingly quickly and easily repaired, and you'd never notice.

Don't worry Smile

Orangeblossom7777 · 27/10/2020 20:15

I did have a chip in a back tooth a few years back and they gave that an excellent filling, would not even know it was there.

The dentists are screening themselves daily for covid. Thought that was good

cultkid · 27/10/2020 20:19

I knocked at least a 1/3 off mine right up to the nerve but didn't touch it thank god

It's hardly possible to tell
I have a white filling I've had it done a few times

Haven't had it changed for about ten years now

It's not perfect but it's a good match

I know it's awful but it's fixable
Did the tooth bleed

Awful chip to front tooth
FireUnderpants · 27/10/2020 20:19

DD chipped her two front top teeth in the side of a swimming pool, leaving a half moon that can fit a drinking straw.

Her dentist used a white filling in the gaps. We did lose one and had it redone. They've lasted almost 6 years now. She just doesn't floss between the two false bits and doesn't have to be careful when she eats.

Popfan · 27/10/2020 20:45

I had a chip in my front tooth, it was repaired and you can't see at all where the chip was. I think it cost around £200. Didn't hurt at all, didn't even need local anaesthetic if I remember rightly.

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/10/2020 07:57

No bleeding thankfully. I'm hoping they can do treatment- think so. They emailed a couple of months ago saying they can do stuff now just not doing routine appts. No sympathy from DH and DCs, they just laugh and ask me to cackle like a witch Hmm

It's great they saved the teeth diggadoo speaking to a relative who had similar to you, back in the 1950s, and had to have the teeth removed and had a plate fitted and false teeth as a young woman. Says she is still traumatised by it and hates dentists. We can see how things have changed. I'm lucky to have a private dentist as we don't have much access to NHS care here anyway and when I did it seemed very rushed.

Just posting to update this as might be helpful to any others needing urgent treatment at the moment.

I have a new tooth! Grin

It took about 3/4 of an hour, and they did X rays to check it was still alive and put something cold on it to check I would feel it. They showed that the root looked Ok and was not near the break.

then they applied another similar tooth filling on top and set it with a light thing. They had to change into full PPE for this part which was all black so that was a bit strange but they were very kind and thanked me for being patient.

It cost £95 and checking insurance should get this back under urgent or emergency treatment as was all done at the same one appointment. So that's good.

They said it is temporary but should last for a while.
Only thing is it looks slightly whiter than the other tooth (they did polish the other one to remove slight staining to help though) and slightly bigger, but they said at the next routine appt they can sort of shave it down a bit.

But I am very pleased to have a tooth again and look less like a witch!
