Stocking up

Is anyone else slowly stockpiling food to not leave the house during the worst of the pandemic?

I have not, but am thinking I should not due to shortage but to shield myself.

Nah, I think supermarkets have upped their game in terms of delivery services so I'm not bothering

rosie1959 · 27/10/2020 05:53

No I always have quite a lot in anyway and have a weekly delivery
For anything else if we couldn't leave the house their are plenty outside our household who would bring shopping to us.

cariadlet · 27/10/2020 06:13

I've got enough for a 2 week quarantine. I'd hope to be able to get an online delivery to get fresh fruit and veg but I've got enough food to make meals for a fortnight if I couldn't get a delivery slot.

Mindymomo · 27/10/2020 06:29

I get a weekly delivery, we have the maximum amount of 95 items, but there is 4 adults here plus a dog and we do all meals. Adult sons take lunch from home to work. Fridge is almost empty by the time the next delivery comes. We have a takeaway once a week and still have my brother round who lives alone once a week.

I could live off what we have in the house, with meals like beans on toast, egg and chips etc., but my sons wouldn’t like it.

devildeepbluesea · 27/10/2020 06:31

No. Quite apart from anything else I have nowhere to put stockpiled food. And I sorted my cupboards on the weekend and discovered I have over 10 kilos of assorted grains, pulses and pasta.

wherestheotherone · 27/10/2020 06:32

I've got a few basics in over the summer. Organised a weekly delivery slot so think we're ok.

MrsGatsby99 · 27/10/2020 07:09

Not stockpiling here but just buying a couple of extra cans every now and again for a back-up.

joystir59 · 27/10/2020 07:16

Stockpiling dried and tinned goods for Brexit supply chain blues as much as CV19.

Gncq · 27/10/2020 07:16

I'll admit I'm buying more from each weekly shop than I did before the pandemic "just in case" but I wouldn't describe it as stockpiling.

Also I'm replacing things differently if you know what I mean, eg we have a 9 pack of loo roll sitting there, instead of opening it and using them all before buying another 9 pack, I've bought a new 9 pack first. Same with 4 pack tins, I'm buying another 4 pack as soon as needing to open ours rather than when it's finished.

That sort of thing! The pandemic has changed my shopping habits somewhat.

Camomila · 27/10/2020 07:20

I'm starting to worry a bit about January (no deal Brexit, lots of the fresh food being stuck in lorries...)
Can't stockpile salad and cherry tomatoes though!

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/10/2020 07:20

Yes but more for brexit than covid. The two together could be very serious. If we can get extra in now whilst there are no supply issues and then stay at home and not add to the problems when things are tougher then imo that’s the responsible thing to do.

MadauntofA · 27/10/2020 07:29

We had a few extra things in - mainly frozen meals that we had batch cooked, frozen loaf etc. Very handy now as we are self isolating - the soonest we could get a supermarket delivery was 1 week, so although we are down to eating a bit random before the delivery on Thursday, it hasn't been a problem.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/10/2020 07:29

We've always naturally had a reasonable supply in, so if we couldn't leave the house for any reason, or just wanted to avoid the shops because of the queues, shortages etc, we'd just eat what we've got in and maybe use the local Co-op. We hardly went to the shops during lockdown and if anything just ran stocks down rather than bought more.

I've never understood people who don't keep anything in and have to go to the shops today/every week or else they'll have to do without unless they have absolutely no space and/or spare money. Why would you put yourself in such a vulnerable position if you're able to avoid it?

I'm not talking about having a fully stocked preppers cellar, just a spare or two of everything you need. Far cheaper too as you just buy on offer or bigger packs. Like the whole toilet roll thing. People talked about normally buying a 4 pack every week or two and then not being able to get any. It's far cheaper to buy in bulk and it's not like it goes off, so why would anyone buy a 4 pack every week when they could get a 16 pack when its on offer and the cost per roll is far less.

I'm not talking about people who live in tiny flats, or those who live from paycheque to paycheque, but the average majority who do have the space and the money to do so.

Sheknowsaboutme · 27/10/2020 08:11

Im always stocked up. Especially in winter. I have to.

Deathraystare · 27/10/2020 08:30

No. I normally have a few tins in anyway. I could not stockpile if I wanted to - tiny room in flat no storage. However, my friend who was entitled to free food because of shielding would give me some of her's because she had too much porridge, rice, tins of soup etc so I am still using those.

However I may buy a few more toilet rolls just in case... just a few packets....

julietmanchester · 27/10/2020 19:18

I'm trying to keep a 2 week supply of food, yet I don't really know where to start.

I normally buy fresh and some tins, so this will be an oddly new experience. I am needing to shield this winter so I will get started on a list.

TheChosenTwo · 27/10/2020 19:26

We aren’t but mainly because I wouldn’t know what to buy extra to what we use on a daily basis.
We don’t really use a lot of tinned food or grains, we have plenty in the cupboards of what we do use (tinned tomatoes and baked beans, other canned beans) and a couple of bags of couscous, bulgar wheat, and lentils but we use those things and have enough.
I’ve never been a massive over buyer though, get a food delivery once a week and it’s mostly fresh food that you can’t really keep for long. Don’t buy anything frozen other than ice cream and peas!

DollyMixtureLulus · 27/10/2020 19:38

I'm expecting to have to quarantine at some point. I don't have anyone who could do a shop for me and will need to rely on getting a delivery slot, so I'm keeping my freezer stocked and some tins in reserve.

I also have emergency Diet Coke and Haribo, i.e. the real essentials Grin

Paranoidmarvin · 27/10/2020 19:47

Yup. Making my list as we speak. Covid and brexit. I’m expecting it to be awful and don’t want to deal with having to go to the supermarket when it is awful.

warmneroli · 27/10/2020 20:07

We're always stocked up here. I don't have a car so I would always have a bulk delivery order for cupboard items and toiletries every few months, then top up on fresh food. But I'm not very good at rotating my store cupboard so I have loads in, and food is taking over my kitchen counters and bedroom. I hate not having a decent surplus of food, I would hate to buy just week to week. We've been getting Tesco weekly deliveries with no problem for the past few months though.

CurlsandCurves · 27/10/2020 20:24

Kind of sort of.

I’ve got loo rolls, 4 tins of tomatoes, 4 bags of pasta, a few pasta sauce stir in things, few other tinned bits, wine and beer in the garage.

And a full freezer.

julietmanchester · 27/10/2020 21:49

@DollyMixtureLulus

Haribo is definitely an essential for me as well! Wouldn't live without it! Grin

I feel this is the one of few ways I have some control of my life- food supplied for our house that we will actually enjoy and eat.

With all that is unknown, all the uncertainty, I feel making a list will help settle some of the fear.

May sound a bit daft, I don't know. Who is judging anyway?

OP posts:
MadauntofA · 28/10/2020 05:45

@LittleOverwhelmed

Not loads, but making sure I keep a small supplier:
  • made sure the freezer is stocked with some batch cooked meals and frozen vegetables and a few loaves.
  • make sure we have a few packets of rice, dried pasta, cans of beans and cans of tomatoes
  • a Christmas supermarket delivery slot booked
  • joined “milk and more”: so regular milk, juice, eggs and bread delivered to the door (with lots of extras available).
  • trying not to run low on anything.

Agree that supermarkets are well stocked. I don’t worry about them running out (although wonder if brexit May cause upset...). Do have some concern about us having to isolate just as I am about to shop... (so a back-up is good).

That's exactly what happened to us - isolation started the morning that I usually do my weekly shop, so having extras in meant not being too stressed that the nearest delivery date was a week away. Also having a few treats (chocolate and crisps!) hidden away has made it much more pleasant. I was looking at milk and more last night - mainly to reduce our plastic use, but would definitely help for future isolations etc.
