Cannot tolerate alcohol anymore

Has this happened to anyone else?I’m not a huge drinker but definitely enjoy a glass of wine or two with food or on a Friday. We have just moved into dream house and I had only two small glasses of Prosecco, lots of food and water before bed, wasn’t remotely drunk , completely sober going to bed as it was at around 6pm. Next day I felt groggy and awful , low energy . Two small glasses would have been absolutely fine a few years ago ..
This has happened everytime I’ve had anymore than 1 drink in the last few months. I’m 35 so is this a part of peri-menopause? It’s obviously not a big problem, just a pity as really enjoy the odd glass of wine but it clearly isn’t worth it, it’s the same though with beer etc...

Anyone?

I believe its a known thing as you get older, unfortunately. I don't bother to drink anymore.

puppygalore · 26/10/2020 21:29

I could have written this! Just had a glass of Prosecco followed by a few cocktails this weekend and ended up being very sick. Previously I only had a few drinks one night just before March lockdown and the same had happened then. Must be the mixing of spirits and juices, but I used to handle as many different cocktails as I wanted. I don't think I'll bother again, it's not worth it.

yep. ive all but stopped drinking. awkward as DH works in wine. have it in abundance but its not worth the bother/feeling terrible

TheHoneyFactory · 26/10/2020 21:33

im same age as you OP. 2/3 glasses feels like 2/3 bottles these days....

What2do2 · 26/10/2020 21:38

That’s exactly it, I might as well have drunk a bottle or two! Weirdly I don’t feel remotely drunk and it’s usually the case where I have food and water afterwards so not going to bed straight after drinks so i feel fine but then sleep really badly and wake up feeling grim!

You say you had a lot of food.. Was it loads and loads? I feel groggy, almost hungover, the night after a big meal (plus snacks) a lot of the time.

Doesn't stop me doing it again of course

howmanyroads · 26/10/2020 22:07

The morning after*

PersonaNonGarter · 26/10/2020 22:08

Age. So annoying.

Delatron · 26/10/2020 22:12

Yep it’s an age thing sorry. Many of my friends have just given up or nurse one glass all night when we go out.

I still persist! I drink less but still, two glasses and I don’t sleep and feel groggy the next day.

To be honest I may as well drink more! At least the hangover would be worth it then. It’s annoying.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/10/2020 22:14

I get my hangover before I’ve finished a small glass now. I gave up.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/10/2020 22:16

I find prosecco to be particularly bad for this. Though it is starting to be more common with other drinks too. Definitely age.

Northernsoullover · 26/10/2020 22:18

I gave up. Hangovers used to be the source of much mirth to my friends and me. Over the last few years they became unbearable. I don't even miss booze now. Hangovers became so horrible that looking at a glass of wine makes me shudder.

Candleabra · 26/10/2020 22:21

I think your body gets less efficient at processing alcohol as you get older. I don't drink at all now, just not worth it. I miss it sometimes in the evening, but never the morning after!

Thankssomuch · 26/10/2020 22:21

I used to be able to drink wine all night and function the next day - now I feel so terrible, anxious and tearful the next day after a relatively small amount I hardly dare drink. I’m 51.

Coughsyrupsucks · 26/10/2020 22:33

My ability drink wine went at 44, and I’m struggling with gin and tonic at 48. My Mum assures me it comes back after menopause. Bloody hormones! I really miss wine.

Crinkle77 · 26/10/2020 22:43

I used to love wine but it makes me feel horrendous these days. Even just one or two small glasses and I feel sick and get palpitations and the next day I feel really hungover.

NomadNoMore · 26/10/2020 22:45

@Coughsyrupsucks she's right!

Dragongirl10 · 26/10/2020 22:48

I am the same, started to feel very ill after a couple of glasses... think 24 hour migraine like head plus upset tummy... felt very low too.. around mid 30 s...

then after 2 dcs and not drinking for almost two years even less able to tolerate it.....

Dee1975 · 26/10/2020 22:53

My hangovers are just getting worse and worse. And I feel really low after. I mean really low.
Have enjoyed drinking most of my life. Prob too much. But seriously considering knocking it on the head .. (im 45, so I’m afraid to say it will prob just get worse for you op ..)

Crunched · 26/10/2020 22:57

The loss of the ability to drink alcohol hit me like a cannonball, going from no hangovers after a heavy night, to awful headaches, nausea and upset stomach after 2 glasses of wine and a cocktail.
Wine is the particular killer.
I have invested in these and they are a game changer.

Cannot tolerate alcohol anymore
billy1966 · 27/10/2020 01:06

Drinking a glass of water can help.

Peri menopausal symptoms can include a stronger reaction to drinking.

Feeling low after alcohol is another one.

A Viridian supplement called Thiamine and Lemon Balm is fantastic a natural mental mood and concentration booster, but also very handy to take after alcohol.

What2do2 · 27/10/2020 06:23

Thanks for replies! Can relate to everything being said, think it’s not worth it anymore..

Yes, I've pretty much given up. I used to love a social drink, in my early 20s I'd easily drink a bottle of wine on a night out and even early 30s I'd have a couple of pints of cider and be fine.

Since about 35 I find alcohol makes me feel very anxious and groggy the next day, I wake up feeling hot and weird during the night and it often lasts a couple of days. It's just not worth it anymore.

EerilyDeleted · 27/10/2020 06:30

Yes, my ability to drink more than the odd glass went in my 30s (now 50s). I have about one drink a fortnight now to keep my hand in and find gin and tonic or white wine better than red or sparkling but I can't see me ever going back to drinking regularly. I think a lot of my friends are similar, when we go to the pub now we will share a bottle of wine between 4 of us and then switch to tea or coffee.
