This list is so shaming, the world is laughing at us. Aussies put us on their news channels, never mind Europe.

Non essential - Wales - ashamed apologise in advance

The items listed eg bottles are exceptions so not deemed non essential - but I'm sure there are other baby products that are essential that have been overlooked.

Smallsteps88 · 26/10/2020 14:11

On that list “plants and flowers” are essential but baby dummies and teethers aren’t? That’s disgraceful!

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 26/10/2020 14:12

Plants are essential but baby bottles and kids shoes are not?

It is absolute madness.

actiongirl1978 · 26/10/2020 14:12

The dummies and teethers are 'exceptions' to the rule.

PicsInRed · 26/10/2020 14:12

Huh, DIY essential, baby care non essential.

3 guesses which sex made that list, eh?
See also, paper products, gardening, car and bike. So essential, can't wait 17 days. But baby care? Nope, let that baby wail. Hmm

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2020 14:12

Personally I'm rather amazed at stationery and computers&accessories being deemed non essential at a time when people are supposed to be wfh if they can.

Smallsteps88 · 26/10/2020 14:13

Ahh xpost so dummies etc are allowed.

NerrSnerr · 26/10/2020 14:13

Those things on the list are exceptions so bottles etc are deemed as essential.

Mamimawr · 26/10/2020 14:14

That list seens sensible to me. What's wrong with it OP?

PicsInRed · 26/10/2020 14:14

Tesco "interpreted" the rules earlier that sanitary products were non essential. Hmm

A woman had to literally go to the media to get that "diktat" reversed.

Rhine · 26/10/2020 14:14

Dickhead Drakeford is a disgrace and embarrassment. He’s doing this just to be ‘different’ to England and Scotland. There’s no reason he can’t introduce a tier system like everywhere else, but he just want to be awkward.

Bring back Carwen Jones! (Never thought I’d say that!).

HoneysuckIejasmine · 26/10/2020 14:16

What's the problem? Are people misunderstanding "exceptions"?

EverydayAScientist · 26/10/2020 14:17

I have no words! I thought Wales were doing ok with choices and steps they are taking (I am England where everything is a complete shower of shit), but the illogicalness of the news coming out of Wales today is ridiculous! Sanitary towels and baby bottles and pacifiers are not essential but flowers are?!?! FFS!

justasking111 · 26/10/2020 14:18

@NerrSnerr

Those things on the list are exceptions so bottles etc are deemed as essential.
Where are you misreading that non-essential means you cannot purchase the product.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 26/10/2020 14:19

Yes because baby care is womens work and DIY is a mans Confused

Shock

Seriously?? And that was a decision made by more than one person. Disgusting.

Well they did not think that one through did they. Printer inks and paper, etc. not essential DOH!!

justasking those baby items are listed in the column ‘exceptions’ so those are the things that are allowed, as they are exceptions to the rule.

devildeepbluesea · 26/10/2020 14:24

I've been generally supportive of Drakeford up to now but this is totally, utterly, batshit crazy.
Quite apart from the fact that one person's essential is different from another's, it is marginalising the most vulnerable in society. The very old or the poorest often can't get online to order stuff. The independent shops will not benefit at all because we'll all just fill Bezos's pockets until we can shop again. And it's awful of the WG to expect shop workers to enforce this and to take the flak from angry people. Not excusing those angry people but we know full well it's the retail workers who will cop it. Not Gething or Drakeford.

justasking111 · 26/10/2020 14:24

This was the list sent to retailers, who followed it faithfully, when the shit hit the fan suddenly the oh but the exception blah blah came out, WAG is dealing with multi national companies not the local corner shop.

Drakeford ducked out of the Andrew Marr show yesterday and put Vaughan Gething in the firing line today. Bloody allotment holder that Drakeford is.

OP posts:
TheChineseChicken · 26/10/2020 14:24

How much time, energy and money is being spent on this? Just bizarre

picklemewalnuts · 26/10/2020 14:24

So the items detailed on the right are in a column called 'exceptions'.

Therefore baby items are nonessential EXCEPT FOR those listed in the column on the right.

In the same way, reading glasses are exceptions and are available for sale.

Adesignforstrife · 26/10/2020 14:25

That's not a government list - it's a supermarket's own internal list. It refers to classification of "SpecialBuys". The baby products listed are exceptions to non-essential, ie they are allowed. The Tesco/sanitary towels thing was a series of cock-ups and misunderstandings. I don't particularly love the rules but honestly the outrage is out of all proportion.

Family member works in social housing she is so angry. Her tenants have zero credit rating, cannot have credit cards so the folk that say oh just order online, amazon, pay pal etc. have no comprehension of how some people live.

picklemewalnuts · 26/10/2020 14:26

Paper is also listed as essential, along with hygiene products.

I'm sure some stores have made mistakes and upset a lot of people, but no one has decreed period products or baby grows and bottles inessential.
