Please help me with my new Doc Martens!

Bought a new pair of Doc Marten Chelsea boots, they were going to be my new wear with everything boots but my god they are like torture devices!

It literally takes about 2 minutes of huffing and puffing, pulling at the tab at the back and at the leather at the front to wiggle my foot into them and then they hurt so bad! Does anyone have any tips to break them in?

You could try stuffing them very full with damp newspaper, but maybe that is just the original boots. It did make a difference to mine which were agony!

PurplePonderer · 25/10/2020 19:49

Oh and using dubbin to make the leather supple.

Dafspunk · 25/10/2020 19:50

I still remember the pain my DMs brought almost 30 years ago. Never again.

They are notoriously uncomfortable , you just have to keep going unfortunately .

justpoppy · 25/10/2020 19:51

They are a pain in the back side to wear in but once you’ve done it they’re the most comfortable things ever. Try wearing them with a pop sock underneath your usual socks. That can help stop blisters. Do persevere though. It’ll be worth it.

FancyNancyl · 25/10/2020 19:52

My dd wore hers in the house only for twenty minutes a day until.the agony passed.

rainatnightlove · 25/10/2020 19:53

I bought some furry ones the other day- olive with a fluffy inside- they're so comfortable and have had no issues. The lady in the shop I was in recommend the balm they sell to put on the inside if you buy the normal boots without the fluffy bits?

This method worked for me...

Put them in front of a warm heater to open up the pores of the leather and soak it in mink oil inside and out. Again put in front of a warm heater for 10-15 mins so the oil soaks in and then leave for 24 hrs. Wipe away the excess and they will be buttery soft.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 25/10/2020 20:00

All of the above plus...loosen the laces a lot and wear thick socks for a while.

MrsWhites · 25/10/2020 20:10

Thanks everyone. I stupidly said no to the doc leather cream, wishing I’d spent the £13 now. Will try the mink oil and everything else suggested!

I’ve stuffed them full of tights and socks and heated them up with a hairdryer then left them cooling still stuffed, will leave them overnight to see if that helps. To be fair it’s the getting them on that is the hardest part because of how narrow and tight the ankle part is.

Will definitely persevere though, I’m sure it will be worth all the pain in the end (I hope)!

Dd use the DM conditioning oil stuff, didn't lace them up fully and wore them with hiking socks over thin socks for increasing amounts of time over 2-3 weeks. I think she started with about 20mins and increased every day, but never long enough to be uncomfortable. Only once she could wear them comfortably for several hours did she lace them all the way up.

MrsWhites · 25/10/2020 20:31

@Dilbertian These ones are the Chelsea boot ones rather than lace ups so particularly difficult to get on!

So far the best method is to take any additional layers off, to prevent overheating whilst huffing, puffing, swearing loudly and using bottom step of stairs to lever foot into boot!

Will try little and often wearing around the house before I brave wearing them outdoors!

Grin

You need one of these.

Jericoo · 25/10/2020 20:45

I bought a pair for £100, wore them once - never again. But they are covered in my blood from the blisters they caused so I can't even resell them! I've definitely never recommend them.

BearSoFair · 25/10/2020 20:50

Good luck! I bought 1460s last year and ended up shoving them at the back of the shoe rack because they were killing me! I know I should get them out and try again but...

SWLondonTown · 25/10/2020 20:51

Are you sure they fit?
I have these and they are very easy to get in and off even 9 months pregnant - no wearing in and no blisters. Adequate elastic pannels at the side. Perhaps the different styles are different fitting...

MrsWhites · 25/10/2020 20:58

@Dilbertian I actually think I do need one of those! Might go out for one tomorrow, I nearly pulled a muscle trying to get them on earlier.

@SWLondonTown they are similar to those but with the chunkier sole, the guy in the shop did say they are really hard to get on until the loosen up but I am actually starting to wonder if they are too small. They do fit nicely when I finally get them on.

Compeed plasters. + time.

Freetodowhatiwant · 25/10/2020 21:09

I am trying to break in lace up ones as we speak. I’ve had pull on biker style ones before but they were men’s and actually ended up too big and uncomfortable to wear as I floated around in them. Now I have the ladies ones and have actually sized up and they are so tighter around the top of the foot. I am wearing them around the house. Thought I would try them outside today and they were just too tight. How annoying! The men’s ones of the same type have silver eyelets and the women’s ones have black which are much nicer.

MrsWhites · 25/10/2020 21:10

@hiccupgate I think I’ve got some of that somewhere, will dig it out!

I didn’t realise it would be such a trial to break them in, here was me thinking I’d be rocking around the pumpkin patch in them this week! I am heartened by reviews on Schuh’s website which mention them being really hard to get on at first but soften up nicely to become super comfortable!

I bought DMs recently, and I'm so glad I went for the soft leather ones. I don't know how people have the patience or pain threshold for the hard proper ones! I do like the Chelsea style boots posted here though-they look lovely!

MrsWhites · 25/10/2020 21:15

@Freetodowhatiwant that’s where mine hurt, at the top of the boot so when I bend my leg forwards they dig in to my shin and the top of my foot too! I’m determined to ride it out, I keep seeing people wearing them with jeans, leggings, skirts - basically they look with everything so I can’t let them defeat me!

In case anyone is interested - these are the ones I got....
