When did fabric conditioners become so strong smelling?

I only use a small amount and yet it's still really strong to the point where I've realised you rarely smell perfume or aftershave off people
Is it just me or do people like them?
Also looking for recommendations for a nice smelling one

We use Smol, much more environmental friendly and smells lovely in a not so strong way.

picklemewalnuts · 25/10/2020 14:41

I've stopped using commercial ones all together. The smell is overwhelming.

Try a splash of vinegar, if you use washing liquid, or an eco alternative so you won't need washing powder at all.

EerilyDeleted · 25/10/2020 14:43

I don't use them, I find them overpowering and don't like smelling the fragrance on other people or worst of all on bedlinen that I am sleeping in. I'm sure they never used to be like this, just a gentle waft when you took the washing out of the machine.

I think I’m going to try an eco alternative but like EerilyDeleted I’m sure they didn’t always smell that strong
What’s Smol?

Smol is an online delivery service for washing pods, fabric softener and dishwasher tablets.

Interesting, I find they don't smell strong enough.

Florencemattell · 25/10/2020 15:25

Don’t use they clog up the machine.

StanfordPines · 25/10/2020 15:29

Op you will find that no one on MN uses conditioner. I have no idea who is buying it all because it can’t be me.
I use M&S. Not too strong smelling and it is not animal tested.

dementedma · 25/10/2020 15:34

Another vote for Smol. The washing pods smell lovely. No need for conditioner

happytoday73 · 25/10/2020 15:36

I never use it.. Mainly because of the smell.. But also because I don't really see the need

Vinorosso74 · 25/10/2020 15:37

I hate the laundry aisle in the supermarket as the smell is so overpowering with the artificial fragrances! I buy a Sainsburys own brand one for sensitive skin (can't remember the exact name but it's white) which is fine. I bought some Lenor or Comfort a few years ago which was too much-am sure it took a few washes to get the smell out!

Ilovecheese53 · 25/10/2020 15:38

I like it. Maybe put less in OP.

OnlyToWin · 25/10/2020 15:40

I love the smell! I got washing envy when people gave me 2nd hand clothes for the kids and they smelled so lovely! I can’t seem to find one strong enough without it being really expensive!

StanfordPines · 25/10/2020 15:40

I tried Smol but found it didn’t soften or and fragrance so it didn’t seem worth it.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 25/10/2020 15:42

Oh no not this again Grin
Using lenor is akin to taking meth on here .
Everyone should only wash their clothes in plain water and vinegar or be punished to death by a firing squad

TheChosenTwo · 25/10/2020 15:42

I always use it.
I use the method coconut one. Love the smell and don’t find it overpowering. Works for me 🤷🏽‍♀️

BackforGood · 25/10/2020 15:42

Like @KatherineJaneway - I find the opposite is true. I love the smell of a nice cleaning / washing product, and struggle to find one that actually remains after you've had the bottle open more than once.
Wish I could find one with a lasting smell.

Flaunch · 25/10/2020 15:45

Stronger they smell the better for me!

RuffleCrow · 25/10/2020 15:46

I know a family who smell so strongly of it, I can smell them from hundreds of feet away. It's a nice smell, don't get me wrong, but i do wonder if they're painting their house with it.

Maskedcrusader · 25/10/2020 15:46

This again? We had one of these last week. We established the smell is overwhelming, vile, makes people nauseous, heave, unable to breath, cant be in the same office, car, building, city, within 500 miles of anyone that's used it. Interestingly we have a now all discovered a company called Smol. It sells fabric softener that smells like angels tears not like the stuff the peasants use.

safariboot · 25/10/2020 15:54

I remember when "super concentrated" came in. Which just makes it easier to use too much by accident.

There are some that are basically unscented. They're what I used before I ditched it altogether.

justaweeone · 25/10/2020 16:09

I've stopped using it, wondered why clothes almost started to feel funny and then read that fabric softener has animal fat in it ( tallow)

londonscalling · 25/10/2020 16:11

I love the smell and the stronger the better.

picklemewalnuts · 25/10/2020 16:12

You become used to the smells and don't notice them. If you've given it all up, it's very over powering.
