Inspiring/life affirming classic movies?

Our girls (13 and 14 years) have been enjoying our Friday night classic movie nights. They love Shawshank, Amadeus and those really emotional uplifting films, usually 1990s/ 2000s but I think they’d cope with earlier...we’ve done Hitchcock and Audrey Hepburn etc

They’re still young but they can cope with slightly more mature stuff, we FF through any violence or sexual stuff. And they reckon they hear so much swearing at school they can cope with hearing the odd fuck ShockGrin

So any further suggestions???

My Left Foot. Slow start, but stay with it.

Thelnebriati · 24/10/2020 12:29

Have you watched Forest Gump? Also the Jane Austen adaptations.

SeraphinaDombegh · 24/10/2020 12:31

The Blind Side
Wonder
Stardust? Might need a little fast forwarding for that one.

Palavah · 24/10/2020 12:33

Working Girl - there are sexual references but they're pretty brief.

Forrest Gump

FlibbertyGiblets · 24/10/2020 12:42

While you were sleeping (not quite per your remit but give it a go)?

MJMG2015 · 24/10/2020 12:46

Not a film, but if you have Netflix 'Anne with an 'e'

Wonder was good

iklboo · 24/10/2020 12:46

A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood

About Time

A League Of Their Own

PuppyMonkey · 24/10/2020 13:09

Oh thanks guys, yes we’ve done some of these, Forest Gump, Ann with an E, stardust, About Time etc.

My Left Foot is just the sort of thing I’m after, thanks! A bit more challenging, edgy - that’s what they’re after.

DP is suggesting One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest - what do we think?

Hacksaw ridge!!

Bouledeneige · 24/10/2020 13:21

Untouchable - French film with subtitles which I and my kids adored as a firm favourite. Very heart warming and fun. Also Little Miss Sunshine - some very funny character roles (running like the uncle played by Steve Carrell is still a family joke) and Juno - wise and funny. My DD and I also loved Ladybird.

Bouledeneige · 24/10/2020 13:26

My DD also loved and still loves all Jane Austen movies. She also really loved Brooklyn and Testament of Youth (so sad).
And a really classy film Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. Also the Devil Wears Pravda and Legally Blond were easy watching favourites of hers.

Before sunset/sunrise/midnight

Hels20 · 24/10/2020 14:32

Crazy, stupid, love (lightish, but lovely message)

The Green Mile.

Dead Man Walking.

Philomena.

Sophie’s Choice.

Hels20 · 24/10/2020 14:34

The Lives of Others - set in 1980s Germany. Sub-titled.

The Piano. Schindler’s List. Million Dollar Baby.

And my all time favourite for emotion - Breaking the Waves though I think the sex is quite graphic.

Hels20 · 24/10/2020 14:37

And of course It’s a Wonderful Life.

As PP said - Juno is also great.

Not sure about One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest - I found it a bit boring when I watched when I was about 15. Liked it later and saw Christian Slater on stage who was amazing.

TheSeedsOfADream · 24/10/2020 14:38

Dead Poets' Society. (Though possibly warn about the suicide first)
Reds
Educating Rita
Brassed Off

ApolloandDaphne · 24/10/2020 14:55

Mona Lisa Smile was one my girls enjoyed

PuppyMonkey · 24/10/2020 14:55

Superb suggestions everyone, thank you! DP has said Schindler's List previously, but I can't bear the thought of watching it again I was so upset when I watched that.

All the other are definitely going on the list - The Green Mile, Dead Poets, that's just the ticket.

Friday Night Movie Night is good to go! Grin

We did It's a Wonderful Life last Xmas, they loved that...

Schindlers List had a profound (and not necessarily positive) impact on me at that age. I've also recently changed my view on The Piano (used to love it, now not so sure).
Educating Rita is a really good call.
Whistle Down the Wind (Hayley Mills)
The Trueman Show
Passport to Pimlico (lots of parallels to today!)

Sadik · 24/10/2020 15:32

Pride?

mrsplum2015 · 24/10/2020 15:37

I just watched Titanic with two of my dc and they loved it
